how does one (of the female persuasion) "shape" one's eyebrows?
and in what shape should they be?
yes, this is for me :(

I read an article in the Grauniad yesterday that said big, bushy, natural eyebrows are back and it's time to throw away your eyebrow pencil.
I threw mine away yesterday.

You could go to a salon to have them shaped for you. You only have to have it done once, then you just maintain the shape by tweezing yourself

I might just point out that when I said "I threw mine away yesterday" I was talking about my eyebrow pencil.
Not my eyebrows.
*Freebasser does not, nor ever has owned an eyebrow pencil. In fact, he doesn't even know what an eyebrow pencil is. Sounds fun though. No it doesn't.

Don't try to give yourself eyebrows that you aren't already inclined to have. Body hair is like a wild animal. You can train it, but without abuse it's not going to do something beyond its normal abilities. I mean you can make a dolphin jump higher but you can't make it knit sweaters.

I'm lucky, I never have to do anything to mine...once I got them waxed at some free thing, and my friend (who is one of those designer brand jeans, etc., people) is like "oh they look soooo much better". I didn't notice any difference.

I go to the salon once in a while for a reshape and wax (obviously lasts longer than tweezing)

god, i am the eyebrow QUEEN! QUEEN!
i don't know what shape you would like them, but i can only describe how to do it the way i've been doing it for years: here (http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c361/nastee/Wedding036-1.jpg) is probably the best example of my natural shape. they haven't been plucked for about 3 days there, though.
one of the best tips i've heard is your eyebrows should not go beyond the imaginary line where your nose/nostril stops on the side of the face. to do this, put a pencil or a knife or something straight - yes, a ruler, i hear you say! - first on one side of a nostril, then on the other nostril. any hair that you have that is on the "wrong" side of the rule (i.e. in between your eyes, that direction) should go!
that sounded so unnecessarily difficult, but you know what i mean.
you should try to create an arch about two thirds of the way into the natural shape of your eyebrow. also, do not be tempted to pluck the top parts of it - only stray hairs which are obviously out of place should go, but not the top part. it's your natural shape and you will look like a fool if you even try it. trust me here!
good luck! eyebrows can make a huge, HUGE difference to the framing of your face. it's one of my only features that i'm super proud of!
and freebasser is right, bushy eyebrows a la brooke shields are meant to be back. mine are kinda thick, but i think they should be cultivated right, ya know? go for it!
p.s. invest in good tweezers, of course. the only brand i use are these bright pink ones that are called tweezerman or something like that. seriously, it makes a difference.

I wish we could wisk you into a salon or a mall and do a big pop musicy makeover montage where we'll have you wincing and squealing as we yank out tangles and rip out hair and show you eyelash curlers and lipsticks until you're dizzy, then have you spin and dance in front of a dressing room mirror until we all collapse in exhaustion and then the next evening you walk into the room with your new look and jaws drop. Of course I'm not like an expert or anything, there should be professionals doing this, not me.

i can count on one hand the number of times i've been to a salon, and it's only been to have my hair cut. i've never had any of that other stuff. :/

Zorra, don't worry about what's in style. Before you submit to any trends, you should find out what works for you personally. Your eyebrows should flatter your features, whether that's bushy or "crisp."

Guys don't notice things like eyebrows. I mean sure it might add to the package, but not by much. The only time I can ever remember even noticing anyones eyebrows is when they've been in conversation or if they're really really really bad.

Exactly. Good eyebrows should blend right into making your whole face look good, they shouldn't be the highlight of your face.

:o, omg!
you are a gorgeous specimen of ladydom, z, and i'm sure once you "do" your eyebrows it will just accentuate teh natural beee-yooouuu-ty you possess! it's not so hard. but if you say you have thin eyebrows, don't go all military-esque on them or else you might end up with none! which would be bad. i only had to sort mine out because they are thick and unruly, and in the end it worked for me. but your eyebrows could look better with just the teeniest bit of a change, and not the massive upheaval i had to do, ya dig? i cannot recall your eyebrows but i'm sure they're not a case study in what not to wear! ;) go girl! (and post pics, please. yah!)
also, if you are blessed with thin eyebrows than maybe they don't need that much of a clean up at all? sometimes the work is sort of unnecessary, like with dandy's case, when god doesn't curse you with big hairy caterpillars above your eyes like mine! so if it's too stressful, dinnae do it!
tracky; the thing is with eyebrows is that they're not immediately acknowledged until you make a (good) change. sure, it won't make someone instantly beautiful but it will, if done right, play off a laydeez features and frame her face.

when I first tweezed, I used a light brown eyepencil to mark where I was going to tweeze. Kind of like mapping it out if that makes sense. It helped a lot.
Just follow your natural arch, whether it's large or small. If you stray from it too much it will look strange. I think your eyebrows look fine, btw.

I notice.
But I don't like the over-tweezed look. And I don't like when they're entirely drawn on. Or when girls try to fight the natural arch of their brows too much. What I actually really hate is just when a guy tweezes half of his eyebrows off and thinks it looks normal.

I agree with Nuzz and nastee that having someone do it for you once helps a lot. You can maintain it for a time. An important thing to remember is you want to pluck mostly the underside, let the top kind of help you determine your shape. And sometimes you can achieve a lot just by clipping some hairs.

If you're not that hairy...it's so worth it to pay to get them done once a month. I have never plucked a single hair...because if I started I'd massacre my face. Eyebrows shouldn't be the main focus as stated above but they really do open up your eyes and shape the face, you'd be amazed.
Tweezerman are fab tweezers, don't buy anything else.

The only thing that I've ever had going for me beauty-wise is that I've never had to tweeze a single eyebrow hair. They simply grow where they're supposed to.
I fear that when I get old, they'll start getting super long and leaving their designated area, because my dad had some nasty old-man eyebrows.

Zorra, come to Texas and we can go to a "salon" together. It'll be fun, I promise. That or we'll get thrown out.
Either way, I'm sure it'd be a good time happening.

no no no, the montage ends with us spinning her around in a salon chair and she's a blur and then the music gets really quiet and then BAM it's her slammin' new look and the music's like AND YOU KNOW YOU WANT ME and we're all upset because maybe she's hotter than us now
i didn't start getting my eyebrows done until about two years ago. i never thought much of it, but i figured i'd give it a try and was really happy with how i looked.
i get mine waxed every month or so, and just do tweezing here and there where it's needed. but i never overpluck, because that makes it so waxing's really difficult. i just use it to maintain the shape. and really, i only do it to get the little hairs that are wayyy out there strays. i leave it up to my waxing lady to thin 'em out when they need it and do the bigger shaping - they have a naturally nice shape, but they look much better when they're cleaned up.
word to the wise: if you do decide to get 'em waxed or threaded or otherwise shaped, immediately afterward apply an astringent with witch hazel in it. it'll keep your follicles from getting infected (mine always break out a little bit a few days afterward no matter what i do, it happens) and it'll reduce some of the redness. the first time you do it, it'll hurt like fucking hell. but after that, the skin will be used to it, and with more and more times it won't really hurt much at all. just a second or two of pain and then it's over. just make sure you keep your skin really clean afterward and seal up them open follicles. tell your waxing person that you want just a little bit cleaned up, and not too thinned out. you can always take more off, but if you overdo it you'll be regretting it like whoa. other waxing tip: go right when they open. it's hard to find a good, inexpensive salon that doesn't use the same wax all day. and that's grody.
and ditto on the tweezerman tip. them shits are awesome. i keep a travel set in my purse for emergencies.

i have eyebrows. big giant caterpillar eyebrows. stiff motherfuckers that dont comply and look fake cause theyre black and long and no wonder im a monkey.
anyway, nothing you have can be as bad as these puppies. and i deal with them with a healthy dose of occasional threading, twice yearly visits to an eyebrow specialist at estee lauder spa, and a few sets of tweezermans at my disposal. oh and clear mascara, it helps to tame and keep them in their designated spots.
as for shape, what the ladies have said is basically it. you have to go with the natural shape of your brow and your face. i cant recall on command what your brows look like, but theyre not too bushy, right? i were you, i would try to tweeze a little of the strays and just try to "brush" them with a dry mascara wand or some clear mascara. often, just a little brushing will make them go in the right place and make them look perfect.
