Well, I actually heard a week ago that it WASN'T going to lose it's planethood, so the reversal really is news. Nothing I learned in grade school is true anymore.

Did I hear it on the Daily Show or the Colbert Report? Because that has to be the only place where I'd hear science news.

I read on wikipedia and the sources it gave that we might have 13 planets or something like that once this debate on the definition of a planet is done. It certainly complicates the old phrase 'my very educated mother just served us nine pickles'.

You guys crack me up.

It's nice to know that I'm not the only one who's like surprised/miffed by the Pluto thing. I'm like "Why did they even have to go and mess with that?" It just seems like some pompous jerks at the IAU wanted to show everyone how smart they are.

BTW Scorpios, you still have Mars as a ruling planet, so no need to fret.

Correct. As are 2 other small objects. This is how our solar system looks now (http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/42012000/jpg/_42012422_solar_system_planets3_416.jpg). The International Astronomical Union set up rules to classify when a planet is a planet and not just a big rock. These new rules mean that 2 other big rocks and pluto are now classified as a "dwarf planet".

It certainly complicates the old phrase 'my very educated mother just served us nine pickles'.Now if we could just rewrite planet definitions in a way that gets rid of neptune, we'd have "my very educated mother just served us" and that would be okay.

What did the phrase become when the orbits of the, uh, planets changed the final order?

i was reading about that on the train, in those mx papers and they'd interviewed these christian school kids who were in like yr.4 about how they felt about it and they were all like "i feel so empty, it was such a good little planet, now one of gods creations is gone, its terrible" i thought it was pretty funny.:p

I don't think Jupiter or Saturn should count as planets, they're just gas.

Nevertheles, they should still be invaded.
