My favourite craze of the 80's was when Marvel ran those ads with pictures of sweet, innocent kids, and on of them would have the word 'MUTIE' painted over their face in red paint. And the sub-head read "You never know who might be a Mutie".

Satanists don't actually do devil worshipping. I used to know quite a bit about it - some guy with a name starting with 'L"... something else.

I forget now.

My oldest cousin (Joey) was into that stuff. He had Iron Maiden posters, all kinds of crazy what-was-once-considered-satanic albums, etc. As a young girl I thought he was really rad.

He is now a preacher with two kids.

When I was in elementary school, the window in our home room had a perfect view of the playground. Beyond the playground was the woods which had about a 20 yard clearing. In this clearing was what looked to be a mini teepee with no cloth. Anyway, this dude in my class told a bunch of us that his older brother said that that's where the satanic people have their rituals and sacrifices. Everyone in my class was scared shitless to play near that area, which sucked cuz that's where the b-ball hoops were. I' not really sure how it happened, but after about a month, all of us kids could rest easily and once again enjoy recess because the satanic shrine for rituals and sacrifices turned out to be the frame of a burnt couch.

Older kids were terrible. When I was a kid, we had the satanic spot and every house in a 5 mile radius from my school seemed to be haunted.

the doors and jimi hendrix are 1960's, hendrix died in 1970, morrison in 1971.

The 70's were: The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Queen, AC/DC, Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath, Aerosmith, KISS, Rush, The Who, T Rex, David Bowie, Ramones, Sex Pistols, The Clash, Talking Heads, etc. etc.

you need to get away from ted nugent, he's a nut. and the doors and jimi hendrix are total bumper stickers now. although drederick loves the doors.

hells yeah...that movie was so fucking good with the muscle men looking things, and the portal to hell in Glen's backyard...when I was 11. i just remember when Dungeons and Dragons was supposed to be the portal to hell for any kid who plays it.

there was an actual account of a group of teens who were into satanism and D&D...and starting doing sacrifices and murders to conicide with the game.

my mom had the true-crime book.
mega cheesy.

not far from rochester is Canidagua lake....
there was this one little stone villa on one the side roads...it was for like picnics, parties, rest stop...i dunno. public ground i guess.
apparently some local people started using it for satanic shit (so the rumors go)....
so the local towns people got together and had it torn down by the county.

my aunt took me there to look at the rubble when i was a kid.
creepy shit.
i remember rumaging through everything...thinking i was gonna find some evil satanic medallions or books...or a goats leg or something.

i found a broken beer bottle.

maybe it was a satanic beer bottle.
we'll never know.

man, i just looked up canidaigua lake + satanism on google...

there's apparently still some satanist-type activity around there as well as in Rochester:

Rocheste and Livingston county report (by the lake):

Grave robbers strike Groveland

Sometime between May 10 and June 11, grave robbers struck the historic Williamsburg Cemetery in the Town of Groveland. The graves of Capt. Samuel Adams Lee, a U.S. Navy officer who died in 1882, and of Major Fitzhugh Birney, a U.S. Army officer who died in 1864, were dug out to a depth of four-or-more feet.

It was speculated that the robbers were seeking military artifacts from the graves. In the process of digging up Capt. Lee's grave, his headstone was toppled.

Both officers had been prominent personages of their day. Birney was Assistant Adjutant General of the Second Division of the Army of the Potomac. His father James Birney had been a Liberal (abolitionist) Party candidate for U.S. president in 1838 and 1842. Capt. Lee was related to the Confederate General Lee and had endured a painful amputation during the Civil War, which had left him a morphine addict.

Historians condemned modern media forms—the Internet and TV programs—with providing the robbers with information and encouragement. A detailed description of Williamsburg Cemetery is on the Internet and recent TV programs touted the value of Civil War artifacts.

Curiously, the robbing of the grave of Civil War General Elisha Marshall in Rochester's Mt. Hope Cemetery took place within days of the Williamsburg robberies. Rochester police attributed the Marshall robbery to Satanic cult activity, but Livingston County Sheriff's investigators discounted Satanism as a motive for the Williamsburg robberies.

The robbers have never been caught and bought to justice.

-----

and last month...there were a rash of break-in animal sacrifices in downtown Rochester...
people were breaking into people houses and backyards and mutilating thier pet dogs and cats...and doing all this crazy ritualist shit with them in the homes....then they just leave the dead pets there.
Cops said it appeard to be satanic or at least ritualistic in nature.
also, they were finding dead animals hung and impaled on gates in the area...

Two beheaded chickens found in cemetary

7/10/03

Two mutilated animals were found near a cemetary on Spencerport road in gates on Friday. Two chicken''s with their heads cut-off were found in the cemetary. A nearby store owner called police after customers complained. Police don''t believe it to be a Satanic ritual.

people were all talking about it....such a minor thing though.

how is it not satanic?
why the fuck else would people bring beheaded chickens into a graveyard?

It's just the longest running urban legend of all time. Buffy the Vampire Slayer had it right -- every community needs someone to blame for the ills of modern society and there are always a small number of kids looking for a scarier new fashion statement.

When I was young, the rumor was that Stevie Nicks was involved with a coven of witches near the suburb where I grew up. People knew people who supposedly saw her somewhere. :p If she ever hung out here, it could only have been for CD treatment.

i have a cousin who is into that stuff. lives in new mexico, used to be this little blonde innocent thing untill a couple years ago. now she's 21, hardcore gothic, still lives with her parents, and her and her boyfriend go to some place where they stick meat hooks in your back and hang you from a ceiling. because apparently satan must like that.

How about the daycare child molester satanists of the 1980's? People claimed the kids were being abused and then it turned out the kids just made shit up and the parents basically put words in their mouths. People are so gay.

My 1st TV job was on the Eastern Shore of Maryland in '88. Salisbury which is located near Ocean City is a very conservative town. Ozzy Osbourne was playing at the local civic center much to the dismay of some church leaders. They held a press conference and held up albums such as--Diary of a Madman and Bark at the Moon. It reminded me of John Lithgow in Footloose.
We did a very funny story using his music and album art mixed with reactionary soundbites. We interviewed metalheads, preachers, soccer moms, etc.

The preachers and picketers at the concert always brought up satan like Ozzy was on a 1st name basis with Lucifer. Very odd times indeed.
