View Full Version : How do I get $100 out of...

a small crack.
a hundred dollar note has fallen down behind a mantle piece thing. I can't see it, I can't get it out.
Any ideas?
I've tried a metre ruler with sticky tape, but the sticky tape gets stuck against the wall and generally gets dirty and folded up.
I've tried a funnel on the end of a vacuum cleaner, but it loses suction for some reason.
Theres' not much room back there :(

I think the first thing you gotta do is get a flash light or something and try to see exactly where it is.

your life is beginning to mirror freebasser's adventure game life!
hmm. problem. i think we need the dimensions of the crack. is it only big enough to fit a slim ruler in it? maybe blu-tac instead of sellotape would be a better idea for grabbing the cash? i would maybe try throwing some object attached to a piece of string beyond the cash, you know, and pulling it towards you slowly so maybe it can catch the cash on the way back and drag it towards ya. this is assuming it is on a flat surface and not something that you have to bring up. details!

wait first we need to look around the room and see what objects we have
look around

The torch doesn't go all the way down the crack so I can't see it.
Blu tac sounds like a good idea, I'll try that soon.
The crack is like a millimetre wide and it goes down - like between the wall and the mantle piece.

a millimeter? damn that's a fine crack. For those in the stupid ways of measuring things, that 1/25 of an inch. Ummm. I would tie a CD to a bit of dental floss and try nastee's idea

i'm just curious as to how the one hundred dollah bill got there.
be honest, you were throwing wads of cash around the room and rubbing them on your greased body saying "oooooh i gots the cash baby, yeahhh!", weren't you?

We had a hundred dollar note sitting in the change box ont eh mantle piece and it somehow floated down there when susan was getting change.
We're not even 100% sure it's down there, but it's no-where else.

Don't give up now. Work that crack!
Who knows waht you might find.
This would make a good beginning for National Treasure 2.

I found a photo of "me and Phil" from the people that lived here in 1996. I binned it.

Oh, man! That sucks.
I would cry if that happened to me, since I'm a single mom on a budget.
Hmm..have you tried looking back there with a flashlight? Would a set of tongs or scissors fit? You could sift it out with tongs or scissors. And don't worry about cutting it. It would probably be at too odd of an angle to sliver the note.

Australian notes are slippery and plastic, so they don't scrunch up like US dollars.
None of that stuff would fit down the crack. :(

I'm pretty sure that a vacuum or air pressure of some sort is the way. I'm just not sure how to go about it.

What about static?
edit - actually now that I think about it, probably not going to be strong enough to hold the note
Can you get a bit of wire the same width as the gap and bent it into a large L shape, the turn that L 30 degrees or so clockwise, slide it in from above and then drag it along the bottom then up and out. This is pretty hard without knowing the exact circumstances, although I'm guessing my mantle is similar

I might purchase something (cheaper than $100) to blow it out. Like a fucking blower vac or something.

if you think that'll work.. bit costly tho. can just get like a balloon and attach it to a straw with a rubber band? (btw this exact design won me a national Tournament of the Minds competition, don't knock it)
Pres Zount
08-25-2006, 07:08 AM
An inflated balloon? The ballon would get stuck - the crack is really thin.

You definately can't get to it by taking something off or moving something? To be honest that is the first thing I'd try but I'm kinda assuming it's not gonna happen. Are you trying to lift if up and out of a crack? I just realised that, I'm thinking your trying to get it from the side.
push the note out to the other side of the mantle piece?
Pres Zount
08-25-2006, 07:21 AM
I'm trying to lift it up. The sides are painted and plastered shut. I would take the thing apart, but it's not my house.

what about a wire coathanger to hook it?
piece of paper.. put a thin layer of glue or wax or something all over it.. slide it down, hopefully it'll grab hold of it?
Pres Zount
08-25-2006, 07:50 AM
It's note, it hasn't really got anything to hook onto. It's sheer and flat.

You'll Need:
pry bar or similar device
dry wall mud or silicone caulk
utility knife
Steps:
run the blade of the utility knife down the seam of the mantle to ensure a clean "seperation" of wall and mantle
gently insert the pry bar (or similar device to obtain leverage between the mantle and the wall)
reach in and remove the $100
return the mantle to the original spot
apply a thin layer of drywall mud (or bead of caulk) over the slice between the mantle and the wall. wet your finger and smoove out the seam
relocate change bowl to a more suitable location

I'm thinking that double sided tape stuck to a metal ruler. That's what I'd have at my disposal and would probably try next. I think locating the note should be your priority. Have you got a small mirror? Maybe that will help you peer down the crack a bit better? How deep do you think the crack is?

invite a crackhead over. those motherfuckers are crafty especially when it comes to money. and when it gets the money out bash it over the head with a frying pan or something. and for it's troubles, give it a sandwich.

Hey, no need to waste a sandwich! Instead, why not just surgically remove his kidneys and leave him in a seedy motel bathtub full of ice?

that sucks!
on a related note (heh) one day i brought home a piece of artwork i did. aboriginal style art, its basically the only piece of artwork i've ever done that was any good (i am beyond bad at art). anyway, dad was so proud of me, he held it up to the wall to see how it would look framed on the wall. and he dropped it. and it fell down in the small crack between the mantlepiece and the wall.
