Do the Beastie Boys ever drop freestyles in their live performances? Can they bust a verse straight off the top? I know they write battle rhymes in the studio but do they ever just flow straight from the mind?

there's that recording floating around where mca and mike are on a radio show (in '92) and they're asked to freestyle.....so yauch starts doing Bodhivist (sp?) Vow and mike does Prof. Booty....hardly a freestlye...but to yauch's defense he does add a couple of lines off the top......i'll look to see if i have it.......

I could have sworn that the brass monkey performance from lollapalooza 94 in New Orleans was freestyled, it could be the same as the japan performance

Supposedly get it together originally started off as a freestyle. the get it together show from tfc 96 q-tip was definitely free styling, but he ended up fucking up the song bad

thats what freestyling is.....off the top......you're gonna fuck up sooner or later......if it sounds too smooth...then its rehearsed...

A lot of the times when you hear an mc freestyle, they will inadvertently reuse old lines, or sometimes they will use prepared segments, that they wrote before. No one can tell that these rhymes were written before cause it’s new to them, its the mc’s word against theirs.

When an mc references places or objects around them then there is more validity to their rhymes

I've got a DVD of a Japan performance from '96 and they DEFINITELY freestyling during the end of one track. Either Pass the Mic or SWW. It wasn't that great.

One of the books I got. I think it's "The Beastie Boys - In Their Own Words". Apparently Mike was always the best. They used to make battle tapes and give 'em to each other and then the next day they would hand each other their replies.
