"Nothing sounds quite

Boom Boom Boom?

That's an 808.

I'm saying the BOOM is the kick drum from the 808. It's a classic hip hop sounds that is still used today.

I can only hear the 808 in S.D.B. in my headphones. The computer speakers won't carry it.

But the link posted above tells you everything anyway.

the base (not bass) of the high plains drifter drum beat is all 808 im pretty sure, i made a replica of the beat minus the little bass part.

It's any drum beat that sounds really manufactured basically, like REALLY fake.

High Plains Drifter, lots of LTI, etc.

While the 808 doesn't really sound like real drums but its not any drum beat that sounds "fake".

The 808 is a specific type of analog synthesized drum machine made by Roland in the early 80s. Its a piece of equipment. It looks like this http://www.isaotomita.net/images/technology/roland_tr-808.jpg

Also, its not just bass, it has all types of drum sounds: snare sounds, cymbols, cowbell, etc. The original "808" that you hear on License to Ill came from one of those Roland drum machines. Because they were analog gear each one sounded slightly different.

Since the 80s lots of other drum machines and software programs have emulated the 808 sounds but the original 808 was a seperate piece of equipment, not just the sounds.

Hip Hop music made the 808 famous. A lot of times the songs they sampled had drums, but they didn't hit hard enought so the hip hop producers would add 808 drum sounds over the drums from the original sample to beef up the sound. Brass monkey does this; they took the intro from "Bring it Here" by Wild Sugar, and added 808 drum sounds to make it hit harder. The drums/percussion on Slow and Low is a good example of the 808 by itself.

The Roland 909 was also popular, but more often used in dance music.

I think I read somewhere in an interview that the Beastie Boys had this 808 which was kinda deeper on the bass than the usual 808

yeah they were saying all 808's werent exactly made the "same" back in the day, there was just a little less "uniform-ness" in the manufacturing of the units, like not all of em sounded exactly the same.

i wouldnt be surprised if you could tweak it on the inside to make it sound a little different.

That was in an interview in Wax Poetics magazine where they talked about the different equipment they've used in production.

Yep, there is a lil' talk about the 808 in Wax Poetics, here (http://www.beastieboys.com/bbs/showthread.php?t=36664&highlight=Wax+magazine)

But actually I thought about this one (http://www.beastieboys.com/bbs/showthread.php?t=59592&highlight=equipment).

MCA: On Brass Monkey there was an 808 that was at Shakedown studios that had the crazy, crazy low end. Some other 808s didn't happen to have as much low end as this particular one. I don't know if it was fucked up or what, but it had the booooom, like, the long crazy kicks, and then I think Rick Rubin stole it.

Yeah, that Scratch Magazine article is the one. Those two magazines are actually affiliated. Although, Wax Poetics is a far far better publication.

Scratch is just so dumbed down. Its got some good stuff in it, like the Beasties article, and some of the interviews stumble into some decent information, but there is so much wack material in there. It seems like its geared toward ignorant teenagers who are more interested in making it big than actually developing their skills as artists. It all about how to market your mixtape and bullshit like that and pretty much ignores skills and any sort of deeper knowledge or understanding of hip hop culture.

Wax Poetics is like a 180 from that. Its a valuable resource because of the crate digging knowledge that's put down and the interviews with the musicians who are so often sampled. That type of knowledge used to only be accessible by hours of crate digging and word or mouth. Its to the point where copies of the first and second issue sell on eBay for $50-100.

It baffles me that those two publications are connected.
