Very clever. Everyone knows our President makes a complete ass of himself when he tries to debate ("YOU FORGOT POLAND!"), so basically it's a way to try to show to the world that he's smarter than our buffoon of a leader...though that REALLY isn't hard to do.

It's an interesting read. I liked this part especially:

Although he did not directly address the U.N. deadline, Ahmadinejad said '"nobody can prevent" Iran from its right to a "peaceful, nuclear program."

I never thought those words could actually go together. "What? We're being peaceful. We just want to build weapons that have the ability to level entire cities. Peacefully, of course."

I'm not saying there isn't a nefarious purpose to said program, however, their stated goal is for energy production not weapons - so yeah there is such a thing as a peaceful nuclear program.

True, one could use nuclear materials for energy in a peaceful way, but in the way he's using it it's just BS rhetoric. I doubt that anything Iran has planned is "peaceful" and having just to do with energy.

I'm not trying to be oppositional, but why do you believe that about Iran? I mean have you seen who's occupying the office that used to house the Office of Special Plans at the Pentagon? They changed the name to the Iranian directorate or some such - but the goal seems to be the same. Sell the public on a war.

After all the lies about Iraq, why would anyone think they are telling the truth about Iran?

It's not so much what I've been told by the administration than what I've found out on my own. I wouldn't want a war with Iran unless it came down to that, but they do pose a viable threat where Iraq did not.

I've seen lots of conflicting information. Some of it concerning the translation of his speeches. It seems he may not have said "Israel should be wiped off the map". There are other examples as well.

I would be interested to read more on the subject if you could direct me to some sources (outside the corporate media) which cite Iran as a threat to the US.

in a kind of ironic horrifying way, nuclear weapons do protect the peace a little. if there were no nuclear weapons in existence during the cold war (would there have even been a cold war without nuclear weapons? i'm not a history major), there more than likely would have been a few more armed clashes between east and west. but as it was, the major powers were too afraid of total annihilation to try and kill each other. at least, kill each other directly.

sort of a peace through fear thing. not the best peace (and a horrible outcome if the peace should fail), but a peace of sorts anyway. it's like if everybody in a town carried a gun, there'd be less crime, but only out of fear. maybe iran just wants a deterrent. i dunno. i dunno if i like it. better than a doomsday device, anyway

As for the actual topic of this thread, Bush would loose the debate as soon as he tried to address his opponent.

As of this date I figure Iran has given up all hope on the tourism.

It's sort of sad how these folks can turn so bitter.

Maybe they can debate human rights issues... such as, is it really ok to imprison, torture and execute humans for things as basic as religion or sexual preference...

Yes, I would love to see W explain how executing a minor or a person with a mental disability is morally superior to Iran's application of the death penalty.

And no doubt W would school him on what constitutes torture vs. "stress positions". He shouldn't even need that earpiece feeding him the answers!

Yeah because killing a mentally disabled murderer is the same as hanging homosexuals in the public square for everyone to see just for being gay is the same... or because stoning women because they brought "dishonor" on their men (by having opinions or marrying someone they love) is the same thing. This can go on all day. Iran NEEDS a bomb dropped on it.

And about women's rights in Iran... How come no one ever mentions honor killings anymore? I'm talking in muslim dictated countries in general?

I saw a quickpoll in today's copy of The Express that said that 76% believe Iran's president would win. The other 34% are just in denial, and believe our president to be (a) coherent and/or (b) a good debater.

There is no way our President is a good debater. We should send Dr. Rice.

Or maybe even "lose" it?

Well...I was on sabbatical for a while.

Got a kid coming in the next week or two.

Bush vs. Ahmadinejad in a debate would be like Tyson vs. Ali....both are overhyped and undertalented.
