...glad to see McCartney getting some love on the bass riff thread.

Craftiest bass players? -- bass players that find melodic, canny, or surprising ways to anchor songs, or some such thing.

Just to kick things off; no particular order:

Paul McCartney (Beatles, Wings, solo)
Eric Avery (Jane's Addiction)
Bootsy Collins (P-funk, solo)
Mike Mills (REM)
Tina Weymouth (Talking Heads)
Bruce Thomas (Costello and the Attractions)
Rick Danko (The Band)

Joey DeMaio (M A N O W A R)

Nick Oliveri (QOTSA, Kyuss, Mondo Generator, The Dwarves)

'In The Fade' off QOTSA's Rated R is a good example of his ability to just go off and do his own thing.

I should've framed this as rock and soul and reggae and metal and rap and pop and so on -- that would explain why Charles Mingus is missing.

One of my former bosses loved the guy's stuff and would've kissed the ground he walked on.

Beats the hell outta me. I used to think they were pretty cool when they first came out, Now I'm not so sure. All of a sudden, he got all weird like Axl did with GNR. Or was Eddie with Van Halen? Oh, well...

Back to the subject at hand:

John Entwistle - The Who (R.I.P) - Check out songs like "Boris the Spider" and "Goin' Mobile".

Les Claypool - Primus, et al - I caught one of their shows years ago. That guy's nuts (in a good way).

Larry Graham - Sly & The Family Stone, Graham Central Station, solo - Often credited for pioneering that pop-and-slap happy style of bass playing. Listen to "The Jam" from GCS.

Geddy Lee - Rush- Are you kiddin me? That entire 3-man line-up was/is nothing but absolute genius.

Flea - Red Hot Chili Peppers - How come nobody else mentions this guy? Huh? How come? What's wrong with Flea? Remember tunes like "Higher Ground" and "Under the Bridge"?

I say it ad nauseum, but I think "The Real Me" is his finest hou -- er, five minutes. (y) He's practically the lead instrument in that song.

if wes borland came back and then fred durst was kicked out of limp bizkit i'd probly buy their next album. ilove the bass, the guitars, really like the sound of the drums, and youve got DJ Lethal. and then mr. red hat walks in and throws up all over the record.

Mike Watt of the Minutemen. (Also recently toured with Iggy & the Stooges as the bass player) Way ahead of his time, can't believe nobody mentioned him!

Robert Crumb

For sheer technical ability, Stuart Morrow from early New Model Army (slightly obscure, but seriously jaw dropping.)

And I also like Tim from RATM.

P-Nut from 311?
as much as I don't like 95% of 311....the bassist is/was pretty on point.

John Paul Jones
Geezer Butler
George Porter Jr.
Cliff Burton

And I think Sting deserves some props. I don't really listen to him, or the Police that much...but I think he has that bass playing shit down.

Holy crap! Another Return to Forever fan?! A Jazz Fusion enthusiast, even! On this board! I started to think I was the only one around here that even heard of them.

Well, there's no need to walk away in shame. You're my new hero on this BBS, bro!

no no let me explain, when i said hang my head in shame i meant for not mentioning him sooner, i don't think anyone else mentioned in this thread is fucking with stanley clarke. He's a fucking animal, no mystery and romantic warrior are just mind blowing albums. I was listening to journey to love earlier today, dude is incredible!

Oh, I see.

Indeed. The guy's brilliant. Romantic Warrior (http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:7fq67ui070jd) is definitely worth checking out, and No Mystery (http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:8x6cmpmf9f6o) is my favorite from the group.

But don't forget his jam with Reach For It with George Duke (http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:mxpyxdsb8oly). One of the best funk-infused bass solos ever.
