I absolutely hate the K-Swiss commercials. It's a sad attempt to make them look "urban", or something.

The only people I've ever seen pull off the K-Swiss look with success are girls, rich white kids who are actually going to play tennis, or really dark-skinned black guys who have the whole polo rugby thing happening. my 2 ¢ for what it's worth.

It's all relative, in fact big corporations are helping these country's economies and significantly lowering unemployment rates. An 18 year old in a Nike factory in America on $4 an hour is probably getting just as bad (if not worse) a deal.

it's not a very good point.
there are very few factories in america today compared with a few decades ago. and DEFINITELY not a nike factory. they are among the worst corporations when it comes to overseas sweatshop (yes, sweatshop) labor. the outsourcing of manufacturing jobs to 3rd world countries hurts everyone in that the companies can pay the workers far below a living wage and make astronomical profits, all the while fucking over americans that could do the same job. but of course we want to pay $15 for a pair of sneakers at wal-mart, so we don't care about how it gets there. whereas nike charges almost $100 a pair for something that was made for so cheap, in such shitty conditions...they are not helping these countries' economies!

besides, should a child that young have a JOB? shouldn't that child be in, oh, i don't know, SCHOOL?

Yeah, because there are plenty of young white American kids who are just DYING to work in a Nike factory for $4 an hour. These kids don't feel mistreated because they are getting money, and a reasonable amount of it for how much things cost in their country. People always make the "50 cents an hour" claim, but when that's enough to buy you food for the week (from people with zero cents) then who's complaining?

I realise this is an issue you feel very strongly about so I'm not going to spend any further time discussing it with you, cuz I don't wanna argue. Let's agree to disagree.

don't beat yourself up over it. it's just the way our economy is set up. besides, you didn't know. one thing you can do in the future, though, is try to only purchase things made in america...we much better labor laws than most other countries, especially the developing ones, and it's supporting our economy as well.

padster, you really don't get it.

and it's not 50 cents an hour. much less than that.

these children take these jobs because they have no other choice. these people don't need a nike factory. they need better economies, better government, more food, better living conditions, better education opportunities. not a job in a sweatshop (in miserable, sometimes deadly conditions) before puberty.

Lex Diamonds

Don't worry, I understand your point perfectly. But it's not Nike you should be going after, it's the corrupt warlord-run governments who spend all their money on armed guards and palaces. How else are these kids meant to get money? How can these parents afford to send their kids to school with such poor wage rates and no kind of child support system from their government?

These countries are, and probably always will be, further from even the worst sides of American life than you could ever imagine.

cosmo105

of course the government's to blame as well. but american corporations, if they had any sort of morals, should not be doing business in places like that where they could take advantage of such a situation. by witholding their business and pressuring the government, they could influence change. but no. (and of course that's one of the many flaws of capitalism.) and nike's one of the worst. they've been busted numerous times for sweatshop labor. it's not as simple as you're making it.

i live in L.a but my parents are from mexico & el salvador......my mom & all her sister worked when they were kids & they were still living in poverty till they moved here

Thanks, I'll have a read and try and learn something. (y)

I understand that Nike have no morals and are being cunts, but how does that make them different to 80% of other large corporations (100% til about 40 years ago when people started doing shit about it)? Basically I'm just being the devil's advocate here, saying there are reasons why they do it and why (at least in their own eyes) it is justifiable.

nike's a big example because they're the industry leader and could influence great change. but nope. their justification? that's simple.

that's good. :) we're all guilty of overconsumption. but if you can at least appreciate that you're lucky, and don't always NEED to have new...things, and stuff, because that's really all it is...that's more than you can say about most people in our culture.

besides, it'll take a big change in society (like our oil reserves running out) to make things different. there's not that much room to make your own choices about what you support sometimes. who wouldn't love to shop at a locally owned business for everything, and all that good stuff? sometimes that's just not possible. but every little step counts.
