A sweet, little old Chinese lady handed me a pamphlet at the Metro yesterday. She didn't speak English, just smiled at me and bowed her head when I took it from her. I thought it was going to be about going to Bible study or something, but it turns out it was information about a certain type of genocide in China.
On the front of the pamphlet:
"Help! Stop illegal organ harvesting and mass killing in China's death camps! Thousands of live Chinese Falun Gong practitioners' organs being harvested for profit and bodies being cremated to destroy evidence... Urgent Rescue: Act now to stop this genocide for the sake of humanity.
For more info: http://www.faluninfo.net/ "
Inside, it tells the story of how "hundreds of thousands of Falun Gong practitioners have been...routinely beaten, tortured, raped, and injected with nerve damaging drugs....Over 2,800 have been confirmed dead as a result of torture by March of 2006."
I know that the Chinese have been guilty of human rights violations, I just hadn't a clue of this specific genocide. What's the world coming to?

Yeah, there were Chinese ladies at the Heritage Festival (mult-culturalism festival here in Edmonton) handing out those same exact pamphlets you got.
I think there was a protestor on the White House lawn when the Chinese President made a visit earlier this summer mentioning this same exact thing.
i've heard of falun gong, but not THAT. yeesh. it doesn't make sense if true, not even from a chinese perspective (i'm not saying that to be racist, i'm just saying that i'm trying to see it through the chinese gov'ts eyes instead of my own and it STILL makes no sense). do they really think the FG is THAT much of a threat to their stability, that they'd do such a thing? i mean the risk of getting caught outweighs any benefits of deterring people from practicing, surely.
fucked up

Have any of you done any research to figure out whether it's true?
There was that episode of the X-Files where Chinese people were playing the lottery but then they got murdered for their organs. That was about a decade ago.

After doing some research, I haven't come up with any debunking of the Falun Gong's claims, but I did come across this article (http://chinaview.wordpress.com/2006/08/15/call-to-un-to-probe-falun-gong-genocide-claims/), which helps support their claims.
The thing is though, there have been so many times in history where people have been hesitant to call it a genocide, hesitant to believe that something so heinous could be happening, they wait until they have all the facts before they act - and by then, oftentimes it's too late. It's tricky because you don't want to go in there if it's a false accusation, but you need to do something as soon as possible before it's too late. And then there's the tricky bureaucracy of defining what "genocide" is. How many people need to die before it's genocide? How long must it have gone on for? When should there be an intervention? Is there a chance it can clear up on its own?
Most cases of genocide in history reveal America's reluctance to get involved, because of overhesitance to believe the claims and to do something about it - they want to wait until more information is in before they make a decision. I can't think of many cases of false claims of genocide from groups, so when something like this comes about I'm more inclined to believe them and get started with action. Them being false and doing something about it is better than them being true and not doing something about it, I think.

I've known about falun gong being illegal in China, and even of the torturing, but not the massmurder. When I was working with the park department (quite a few years ago now) the Chinese embassy was near by and there was always some people doing falun gong in the field near there, like a silent protest.
In Sweden there's a town called Falun, but you won't find it if you surf the internet in China....
