because the monthly charge was deducted, the cheque bounced.
and he didn't contact me by phone, or email me, but rather came to the place while i was asleep, woke me up and told me to get cash for him right now...
13 days after it bounced...

That's pretty poor form and I'm pretty sure that by law (at least here) he has no right to do that. I had my rent taken out of my account automatically, but that expired and I forgot to renew it, the agent just sent us a letter, I gave them a call and told them what happened, life went on. Sounds like...*looks out window* hey there's 2 people totally going at it oh wtf it's like a 13 year old and a 20-something... fuck wrong

yeah, i dont understand that. if you expect me to pay you on the first of the month, then you better cash that check right away because theres no way i can keep that much money in my account all the time...

If I were your landlord I would have done the same thing except I would have come at even a MORE uncomfortable time for you, and maybe threatened your loved ones with some sort of bodily harm. WHen you write someone a check, you are supposed to balance your books and not spend that money because ~it's not yours anymore~ doesn't matter if you post dated the check or if your rent is due on the 1st or zzzz.... it's your bad, not his.

If my landlord does this -- and some have -- I pay with a money order and just keep the receipt.
Even if I'm solvent, I hate waiting for checks to clear.

I used to have to pay with money orders when I was in college because I accidentally bounced my first rent check. it was actually better though, because then it's just settled.
but otherwise, ya, you should balance your checkbook. I don't really do it on paper. I just kind of do it in my head. I haven't bounced a check in years though.
