Gilbert O'Sullivan - Alone Again

When I saw the thread title, that's what I thought of.

I'll give it some more thought. How about Roy Orbison - Crying

There's a fine line between real anguish (Joy Division style) and overdone venting (Korn).

Don't get me wrong, when Jonathan Davis cries his eyes out at the end of a song it's uncomfortable to listen to, but when someone then goes onto kill themselves, it's far chillier.

That song is almost the opposite of anguish...

Probably a better choice is

"Only the Lonely" - Frank Sinatra

I'd chip in:

"Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" - The Animals/Joe Cocker/Elvis Costello
"The Tracks of My Tears" - Smokey Robinson and the Miracles
"I Can See for Miles" - The Who (anguish as text + subtext)
"Backstreets" - Bruce Springsteen
"Caroline No" - The Beach Boys
"Your Cheating Heart" - Hank Williams
"It's Too Late" - Buddy Holly
"Hellhound on my Trail" - Robert Johnson

"Caroline No" - The Beach Boys

Shallowest song in the world ever IMO.
So she cut her hair!? Does that make her totally unlovable? Hair grows!

A big part of that song is watching a girl who had real inner beauty change, either because of how experience has hardened her or she's willfully sacrificed her innocence to conform. There's some ambiguity, but it works; that song is a major lament.

Where did your long hair go
Where is the girl I used to know
How could you lose that happy glow
Oh, Caroline no

Who took that look away
I remember how you used to say
You'd never change, but thats not true
Oh, Caroline you

Break my heart
I want to go and cry
Its so sad to watch a sweet thing die
Oh, Caroline why

Could I ever find in you again
Things that made me love you so much then
Could we ever bring em back once they have gone
Oh, Caroline no
