I dunno, I've gotten REALLY drunk in my lifetime and said some stupid things. However, they were things that I secretly thought in real life and didn't want to say to people. Like telling my friend that I don't like her boyfriend, or telling someone else that I think her ditching me last week was super-lame and lousy of her. I'm sure I'd never say that "Jews were the reason for all the wars in the world," unless I had some sort of anti-Jewish sentiment to begin with. I'm pretty sure a lot of people are the same way. Most sensible people don't just pull statements like that outta their asses, even when drunk, unless they had some sort of lingering thread of truth behind it.

Just in my experience, it seems like a lame excuse to say "I was drunk" after the fact. It doesn't work for guys who go and sleep with another woman behind their wives' backs: "Oh honey. You forgot the qualifier ("sort of").

There were enough interesting ideas and big themes in there that if someone had really fixed up that script and not obligatorily cast Tina in it, you might've really had something. But it's so screwed up it winds up being only okay, as you said.

The best thing about Gallipoli was it's exploration of the futility of war in a real situation.

Most Americans, I would presume to state, have no idea what really happened in Gallipoli, why the Entente went there in the first place (The Ottoman Empire was an ally of the Central Powers during WWI and had closed off the Straits of Dardanelles to preclude shipping to the Russians from the Mediterranean via the Black Sea - the Entente invaded to open the Straits and hopefully knock the Ottomans out of the war), nor the outcome and consequences on the greater war effort.

At least the movie showed what happened in a way that has rarely been matched on film (though I'd offer up All Quiet on The Western Front and Saving Private Ryan as a few that can hold up to the "realism" of Gallipoli) and featured a great performance by Mel, before his anti-Jew ramblings....
