I just installed the pre-RC1 tonight and i like it. Allthough it took a little while to get connected to the internet and download drivers. I'm rockin Aero and it is sweet.

Explain all of that to me. I'm really interested whenever Microsoft do something. Seriously. What's a pre-RC1? Does it look like Windows? Will we all be using it (PC users)?

jabumbo:
yes and no.
It's both. It can be an upgrade from xp or a clean install once released early next year.
kid p:
Pre-RC1 means the pre- first release candidate. Software development testing starts out in Alpha, the it moves through various betas (beta 1, beta 2 , etc) then when the software is feature complete and almost ready to be RTM'ed (released to manufactor aka made and boxed for shippment).
Windows vista is supposed to be RTM'ed by the end of this year and you should see it on store shelves early next year.
here are some screen shots.

Thanks a lot. We were discussing this in my Information Systems class first semester. It looks cool.

i have(had) the beta 2. i liked it but there wasn't working drivers for my soundcard for x64 so i didn't really use it much. besides the drivers problems it seemed quite nice.

ooh, it looks pretty and stuff.
so, at the risk of sounding really stupid, how can you get this (without paying for it, i assume) and for it to work completely fine and.. fully? i wouldn't want to download this if it's gonna fuck my brand new hd.

why was i under the impression that this new OS was to be called longhorn?
what are those tach type gauges? CPU, ram usage?
anything new looking at this point is going to be welcomed with open arms. from the screen shots, it just looks like fresher, crisper, cleaner skins to me.
will there be pro and residential editions like XP? what PC requirements will be necessary to run it properly?
new OS are like newly elected presidents. everybody's stoked for the first couple of months, until they realize it's the same old shit, in a different suit.
i thought real nerds ran linux.

I'm guessing the gauges are not part of the OS but rather some piece of software provided to him by the manufacturers of his motherboard. Something like Asus Probe, which is what I have, except asus probe is an 8 year old program thats ugly as fuck and that ones all nice and snazzy.

ah i see. so really what's new with this offering? what's it going to cost to upgrade, purchase etc?
Vista Price points (http://blogs.zdnet.com/Bott/?p=125)
If this ends up being a RAM hog I'm not even fucking with it. Who cares what it looks like if it runs like shit? It defeats the purpose of having an OS like that in the first place. If I wanted it to look pretty I'd tie ribbons to my monitor. I should start using Linux...

lol @ ribbons. i researched linux one day. i really think it's out of my expertise. why doesn't a company like mozilla make a nice OS and offer it for free? they seem to have a handle on browsers.

What are the system requirements for this....for it to function optimally
Here's what Microsoft has to say. (http://www.microsoft.com/technet/windowsvista/evaluate/hardware/vistarpc.mspx) Hopefully they do not pull a Sony and bump it up later on.
Linux is way out of my expertise as well but I'd be a better person if I learned to use it. I'm pretty used to the Windows based products though. It's hard to switch. I think if anyone's going to tackle the OS it'll be Google. I think once Vista hits and Google sees what works and doesn't they'll use that to their advantage. They should anyway.

i'm impossible to please. bascially i want a widows-type format offered by someone other than microsoft. its hard for me to see outside the box. i can't imagine using an OS that didn't function with windows or panels of some sort. what is the alternative? for most people windows and maybe DOS is all they've ever known. but isn't windows just DOS configured for ease of use?
the windows concept is so established and easy to use, how can anything be more user friendly? i like firefox but the way its presented it seems to be based on explorer with a few tweaks and visual differences. any new competitive OS would probably resemble windows and never make it to the market due to copyright issues.
way to corner the market mr gates, no wonder you're so fucking loaded.

why was i under the impression that this new OS was to be called longhorn?
That was the codename for it, the offical name is Vista. Just like with the Nintendo Revolution to the Nintendo Wii
what are those tach type gauges? CPU, ram usage?
Yes and yes. Part of the new sidebar widgets.
anything new looking at this point is going to be welcomed with open arms. from the screen shots, it just looks like fresher, crisper, cleaner skins to me.
it's more than UI, allthough that is a major part of it. There is better search, it is far more secure that xp is, better device driver handling, and a whole lot more.
will there be pro and residential editions like XP?
yes and a couple more, I installed Vista Ultimate which has everything available that MS is packaging with Vista.
i thought real nerds ran linux.
I do, well did. I installed vista on my linux box. Not a big deal.

wrong. There are a lot of windows type GUI for linux and even mac took some design from windows for their OS. It's what people are used too. It can't really be copyrighted heavily.

Nope, it is based on the Gecko rendering engine which is what netscape was based from. IE is based off of Mosaic.

I have a copy and it's still nowhere near as good as Mac OS X. And the whole widget thing just looks like it was taken from Panther.
