yeah, i voted on this a while ago. Compared to some of stuff on there i'd be pissed off if the statue of liberty made it in. I highly doubt i'll opera house will get in either. Obvious ones that will get in, Great Wall, Pyramids, Colleseum and the Taj Mahal. I'd like to see St Basil's Cathedral, the Chirst Redeemer and Angkor to get in too

Opera house is shit. It's hardly a wonder.

it's shit compared to the one's on there, but it's the youngest one there, and as if australia's going to have anything decent to nominate, we're barely 200 years old. But the only thing i'll give it is that there's nothing really that good that's been built anywhere in the world in the past 30 years. I've seen the opera house tho, it's not that impressive. The Big Pineapple should've been nominated instead for australia(y)

It's less of an visual thing I suspect, more for the audio enhancement the architecture provides. I mean Stonehenge is not exactly eye candy either, being as sleek and sexy as a 3000 yr old stargazing device...

hahaha, you know i never thought that the way it is built is good for the accoustics of opera. stone henge would be nice to see, although i'm sure nastee and every other scot would be pissed off if it was taken off the seven wonders list

I thought Stonehenge was in the english parts?
Here's one I hope to visit some day...:

from what i remember from grade 5 when we did the wonders of the world stonehenge is in scotland. what are the current ones? i'm pretty sure they're the pyramids, the sphinx, stonehenge, great wall, taj mahal, mt rushmore, eiffel tower. i think the leaning tower of pisa is the last but i'm not sure of that one

Modern

Modern wonders
The American Society of Civil Engineers compiled another list of wonders of the modern world:

Channel Tunnel
CN Tower
Empire State Building (musta been chosen in 1900)
Golden Gate Bridge ( likely biased, theres bigger ones)
Itaipu Dam
Delta Works
Panama Canal (<-- OI, I like this choice..)

Tourist travel wonders
The following list of the top seven tourist travel wonders was compiled by Hillman Wonders:

Great Pyramids of Giza
Great Wall of China
Taj Mahal
Serengeti Migration
Galapagos
Grand Canyon
Machu Picchu

Natural wonders
Similar to the other lists of wonders, there is no consensus on a list of seven natural wonders of the world, as there has been debate over how large the list should be. One of the many lists was compiled by CNN :

Grand Canyon
Great Barrier Reef
Harbor of Rio de Janeiro
Mount Everest
Northern Lights (sssmokin')
Paricutín volcano
Victoria Falls

Underwater wonders
This list of underwater wonders is of unknown origin but has been repeated sufficiently often to acquire a degree of notability:

Palau
Belize Barrier Reef
Great Barrier Reef
Deep-Sea Vents
Galapagos Islands
Lake Baikal
Northern Red Sea

i think some of the ancient wonders are a bit different to what we learnt. i'm surprised the acropolis wasn't mentioned. Btw, Samarkand looks amazing, i'm surprised i've never heard of it before. Damn this thread makes me pissed off i haven't been out of Australia before!

Acropolis is somewhat f**ked with all the smog and air pollution.
I first read about Samarkand in a Sword & Sorcery novel by Fritz Leiber. I remembered hearing the name once or twice in documentaries bout the Silk Road (its in Usbekistan now). Awesome spot, they have a freakin huge necropolis there.
And don't worry, everytime I hear about Oz I'm bitter I only spent 2 weeks there...;)

Just goes to show you that you learn better and more useful stuff on the BB boards than in school.

feats of engineering, like pyramids and moais and stonehenge, are the ones that i would pick. i find them so completely amazing, and part of their appeal is their mystery.

my bad, it was 11 years ago tho.

monkey, i appreciate the history behind man made achievements. like with St Basil's Cathedral, Ivan the Terrible burnt out the eyes of the architects. as bad as that is i find it impressive. there's lots of another analogies to compare st basils with russia too. gotta look for the deeper meaning

i thought the whole reason why they are considered wonders is because nobody really knows how they built them?

not to say that they arent feats in themselves, but its clearly not as impressive as all the ancient works

That would qualify about 99% of todays software! ;-)

And YOU of all people fell for it! We have a saying here" 2 morons, 1 same thought"... Haha! (y)
