Considering this a shouting from the rooftops post.
My doctors' appointments last month were very encouraging. The primary, liver, and blood doctors all agree I've made great progress. I've graduated from "you almost died" to "you're ready to get back to increased activity".
First thing is they are upping my iron level. I will no longer be anemic, which means I'll have more energy.
Second, my primary doctor told me I can have a beer once in a while -- though he said he would deny that to my liver doctor. Despite this proclamation over a week ago, I haven't had a beer yet. I'm waiting for the right moment and meal -- probably with some sushi.
Third, my blood doctor is no longer worried about me suffering a brain clot and told me I can resume playing basketball. He told me to be careful about getting hit in the head, but then again, I always have been.
And lastly, I am going to have elective surgery on the hernia and gallstones which were caused by my liver clots. This isn't really good news other than the doctors feel I'm stable enough to avoid surgical complications. Also, better to have these done electively than in an urgent situation.
So, of course, I played two games of basketball last week. I sucked, so I guess not much has changed.
And life goes on.

what was wrong with you mate? something with your liver i'm guessing?I've got a blood clotting condition. It manifested itself in my liver. After a misdiagnosis, I had emergency surgery on my liver which basically saved my life. From strapping young(ish) lad to hospital gown wearing, IV toting, liquid food slurping aged in a matter of hours.

I'm going in for "elective" gallbladder removal and hernia repair next Tues. It's elective because I'm not in acute pain, but if I were in acute pain, it'd be emergency. I'm also hoping it helps my digestion and liver functions return to normal.

My gallbladder was removed 8 years ago. I haven't missed it at all. It's much much better to do it before it is an emergency.
Good luck to you.
fantastic news, man (y)
all the best to you and the fam. hoping for a speedy recovery so you can get back to enjoying life, beer, basketball, and i think you still smoke the occassional joint. now if only the 49ers can recover like you have.

good for you, man!
Marsdaddy, I did not know that you were going through such a difficult time. I am glad to hear that the doctors are taking good care of you and you are getting back to normal. Maybe, my Heat will pick you up as a shooting guard/forward since D Wade is out for 6 weeks.
Mars, you are a good man with a loving family and I will keep you in my thoughts. You are a rich man because you have children to run into your arms when your hands are empty. Oh, and please work on your J because I don't want you to embarrass Pat Riley.

I know it's a good thing to have this surgery done, but I'm sorry all of this came down on you.
Do they keep you for a day or two? I hope it's not one of those HMO things where they're booting you out the door ASAP.

Do they keep you for a day or two? I hope it's not one of those HMO things where they're booting you out the door ASAP.The good news, I don't have an HMO. The bad news, I have a $500 deductible and up to $2K out of pocket.
I'm going to be in the hospital 1-2 days. Thanks for all the positive thoughts, kids. Think about me Tuesday and wish me home by Wednesday -- that means all went well and I'm recuperating at home.
Home is going to be 'fun'. The in-laws, the parents, the baby who now nanny shares with another family, and the 4.5 year old bouncing off the walls. There will be little downtime for me, but as Yeti said, I love it.
I don't think I'll be ready for the Heat before Wade makes it back. But I'll shoot for coming off the bench for him as he works his way back to basketball shape.

Home from the hospital yesterday, the surgery went relatively uneventfully. But, it aggravated my sciatia. No Sleep for Four Nights!

Well, the good news outweighs the bad. It's a shame you can't be more comfortable, though. Sorry, sir.

So, that sucked. I just got out of the hospital after another emergency procedure, 6 days in ICU, and now I'm "on the mend". Didn't see that one coming!
No real good explanations, other than the original procedure I had done in 2005 stopped working and we found out pretty quickly. It had something to do with my gallbladder and hernia surgery, but was more just a necessary revision of the original procedure.
The good news is (if I can believe the medical experts)
This time it's better
The Dr. who did this one invented my treatment
Everytime they do this, the technology improves
Things are flowing now!
Still, I was thinking my 2nd greatest fear from the gallbladder procedure was realized -- I am back to what initially happened. Being dead and unable to help my kids grow up is my greatest fear.

glad this time it's better!
how rough though :( here's to a speedy recovery
Marsdaddy, I am glad to hear that your surgery went well. I hope you can get into the recovery phase and not keep going under the knife.
I am a firm believer in the power of postive thinking and the love of your family is as powerful and positive as it can get. The power of love to change bodies is legendary. Why do you think Huey Lewis wrote the great hit Power of Love!?
Every day may not be good, but there is something good in every day.
Hug that wife and those kids.
You da man.

Shit, man. I continue to be shocked at this stuff. The picture I have of you is this happy and healthy guy. I don't know why this stuff happens to people who take care of themselves.
I hope the worst is over. Be good. (y)

Thanks guys for the good words. Yeah, power of positive thinking, healthy overall, kids, wife, family, even the cats are helping me feel better. I'm not nearly as weak this time and haven't lost that much weight.
