I realized that I'm not familiar with Mr. Matthews and his band.

How is it that I know that he's from South Africa, but I can't name a single song?

I'm not interested in checking him out. I'm not looking for recommendations. It's just that I saw a list of popular bands from the 1990s and it/he/them ranked high. How did I completely block this phenomenon? How is it possible?

Does anyone have a similar blockage?

I am in the same boat as you with Dave Matthews. He played 3 soldout shows over the Labor Day weekend here at the Gorge....I would have never known had it not been for a co-worker. He is immensely popular, a likable guy and actually a fine actor.

Plus he lives in Seattle half the year.

Who the hell is he?

I blocked this phenomenon the same way I blocked the Hootie and the Blowfish phenomenon.

At least they didn't dump lots of human waste from their bus into the Chicago River onto passengers in a boat.

Who did that?

I have heard of Hootie and I even know that there is no one named Hootie in the band. I can't think of the name of their song (Mr. Jones is Counting Crows, right?) but I think it had a dolphin in it and I'm sure I could pick it out of a line up.

I don't even know any Dave Matthews fans. I have a friend who swears that the guy from Counting Crows is a genius but this Dave Matthews thing is as confusing as the Garth Brooks thing was. Except that I expect southerners to be into strange things I don't know about. Yeahwho is right -- it's the ones who sell out your large hometown venues that are the puzzlers.

So are we saying this band may be bland? What is it that 75,000 people paid between $40 and $60 for something bland. They generated $3,750,000 dollars last weekend.

I bet they sound good if your high on weed, maybe some wine.

i dont know how you can say you don't know a single song by them. before i even started listening to them i could name about 5 or so just from occasional radio listening, in my high school everyone listened to them.

i wasnt a dave matthews fan until about two years ago. i was close minded and dismissed him as some band that only kids that knew nothing about music listened to. but then after realizing he sells out so many shows, i realized there must be SOMETHING good about it...

and some of it is pretty good, the albums "crash" and "under the table and dreaming" are both nice. they put on a nice live show too.

Anyways, I'm wagering you've probably heard "Crash Into Me" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TlybbfKINWY) or "Don't Drink The Water" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_zK0ZZgZEaw) or any other popular DMB song without realizing it was them in passing or something.

I won't lie, I've enjoyed the band, but they are woefully overrated. "Crash Into Me" is still a great song that brings shivers to my spine, but listening to an ENTIRE album of theirs is an endurance test.

You haven't missed much, so don't sweat it.

It really surprises me too. I haven't listened to a pop hits radio station since I last had a job where a co-worker played the radio. That would have been about 12 years ago. But usually I still get exposed to pop songs via commercials, movies, music in stores, and channel surfing including MTV. I can ID Limp Bizkit and Backstreet Boys songs for some reason, so I can't figure out how something this big fell through the cracks.

The sound of his voice in the first song sounds familiar but the song does not. The second one isn't at all familiar.

I did notice that he has the ugliest CD cover on his more recent release. Everytime I see it at Starbucks, I think "what in the hell is that" and then I read it and it has his name on it.

He's got some absolutely amazing songs. He's a great live act too. "Two Step" is one of my favorites. "Crash into Me" is one of the best songs ever written, IMO. I also dig "Satellite" and a bunch of others. Not really an album fan, but this guy was a god in college late 90s - 2001. I'm a casual fan at best.

I used to hate the Dave Matthews Band. But now I love them.

A friend of mine showed me a bit of the central park concert dvd. I liked what I saw so I bought the central park concert on cd.

The central park cd got me hooked on their music.

Before you knock them go see them live. I have seen them twice and they put on one of the best live shows I have ever seen. There is a reason why they sell out stadiums and have such a loyal fan base.

Pick up any of their live albums if you want to hear what their all about.

Here are some good tracks to listen to, live or in the studio:

So Much To Say
Too Much
Jimi Thing
Stay (wasting time)
What Would You Say
Ants Marching
Two Step
Rapunzel
Don’t Drink The Water
Raven
Louisiana Bayou
Everyday
Say Goodbye

A good studio album to get started with is crash

Just to let everyone know "crash into me" is kind of a twisted love song, the song was written from a “peeping tom’s” perspective
Most people think it’s a sweet love song when it’s actually about a stalker ex-boyfriend who wants his girlfriend back.

Just listen to some of the lyrics:

If Ive gone overboard
Then Im begging you
To forgive me
In my haste

Hike up your skirt a little more
And show the world to me

Oh I watch you there
Through the window
And I stare at you
You wear nothing but you
Wear it so well

Hey, me too. now I'm all close-minded and shit, but i still give songs like Haloween and The Stone a spin once in a while. I'm no racist.

Usually when they throw down Dave Matthews and his band or Sublime it's a good indicator that it's time to find someplace else to go, or that rowdy guys with self esteem issues in Abercrombie polos are ready to fight.

Spent the past week listening to Dave Matthews Band, I am not of notion to go out and buy a concert ticket, mainly because of the huge venues they play. I would pay to see them play in a smaller theater though.

Dave's voice is unique, sort of a kermit the frog tone to it. An excellent storyteller voice. The band is superb. I like them OK. The elements are all there for a great great album, but it seems as if they just sort of glimpse at the ring.

IMHO

I only own Crash, and i think its excellent, but I have absolutely no interest in checking out anything else by them. Crash reminds me of my summer in America, and its all gravy.
