You remember back in Feb 2005 when the Beastie Boys (along with other celebrities) were said to have signed a petition against Kentucky Fried Chicken and then later they issued a statement here on beastieboys.com...anyone out there happen to right-click and save it?

yeah, mca stated somehtign bout how PETA used their signatures with out their consent. The group thought that their signatures were being used for a petition ,and not a letter.

Gettin’ more ink than the Colonel’s got chickens
Wow, Shit gets hectic quick. Sign a petition in an airport and next thing you know you’re a poster-boy. This shit needs some straightening out.
For the record, we did not draft this letter. Basically it went down like this; a lady was walking around an airport in Australia asking people to sign something. When she approached me I thought (and I assume that Adam and Mike did as well) that it was a petition that she was getting as many signatures on as she could. So I signed it thinking that I might be able to help out with stopping some unnecessary suffering of some birds. But I thought that my name would appear in conjunction with thousands of others.
By the look of the letter that PETA sent out, they must have scanned our signatures, photo shopped them neatly in order and then added our names typed in, so that it would look like we drafted and sent the letter ourselves.
And from all the news hits they got on this, they must have sent it out to every news outlet they could get a hold of.
The strangest part of it is that the press just printed it without checking in to see if we really wrote or sent the letter.
I’m sure PETA is well intentioned, but seriously, what the fuck? Pull your shit together. If we want to draft an open letter to someone and send it out to the media we’ll do it ourselves.

Not to stir up any controversy, but I know the person who came up to them and that isn't how it went down. My guess is that maybe their record label thought it was a bad idea to be associated with PETA or maybe KFC has sponsored one of their tours. Anyway, I'm just saying this for the record for anyone who maybe curious.

I suspect that the band members didn't all agree. One of them probably supports PETA more than the others.

^I'm curious. What really went down? Are you saying Yauch was blatantly lying?

No, he wasn't necessarily lieing. Somehow he might not have thought it was a letter, although the letter that was sent to the press is the same one he signed. It could have been that he didn't know it would be a public letter sent to all the media sources and thought more people would sign it.
They were at an Australian airport when they were approached, they were told about the cruelty involved in relation to KFC, and they were asked to sign the letter to show their support. The letter was specifically for them to sign, not random people in the airport. Now, if PETA wanted to make fake letters they could do that with everyone they come into contact with. Better yet, how about make a fake letter against KFC from someone who has already worked with a PETA anti-fur campaign. That way, the celebrity would look like a liar if they deny the letter since they've already worked with PETA in the past.

Do you know how you can tell when a PETA person is lying?
