I hoped that there might be a glimmer of hope of a good gig to go to while I was in NYC but I never thought I'd get the chance to see the Beasties there. Even if it is a short set it'll be worth it :) .

I wonder if MMM will be in attendance?

Anyone got any suggestions of places to check out in NYC (besides the obvious touristy stuff)...

09-18-2006, 11:12 AM
i'm pretty sure that i have been to this venue before, though for a non-conncert related event. i worked in the ballroom area, which is probably where the show will be. it's in the maritime hotel, and has a very asian feel to it. there is a decent size dancefloor and a small stage thats close to the floor. should be a very intimate show!

unfortunaley, it's the second game of the Division Series and us Yankees fans will be pre-occupied

Pootytang
09-20-2006, 10:59 AM
Wanna know what sucks for some fans. This is a 21 and up show. Here is a copy of the email I recieved from Give me Shelter:

Greetings, and thanks for supporting Gimme Shelter!

Here are a few things to know about the show. Please read them carefully as they contain important information.

* No one under 21 will be allowed to enter the premises.

*You must present a photo ID to claim your tickets

*The person whose name the ticket is being held under is the only person who may pick up his/her ticket and will be required to show ID to do so.

*If you purchased multiple tickets and you did NOT provide names for the other tickets to be held under you MUST be present to pick up all tickets. We will not give tickets to anyone whose name is not on our list. Therefore, if you purchased tickets for unidentified friends, you must pick up their tickets for them.

*Only the person who purchased the tickets is able to change the name of ticket holders. Example: Mary purchased a ticket for herself and her two friends, George and Stu. Stu is not allowed to change Geroge's ticket into his girlfriend Roxy's name. Only Mary can change George's ticket into Roxy's name. To do this, email gimmeshelter_tickets@yahoo.com with NAME CHANGE in the subject header BY 5 PM, OCT. 3. Provide the ticket purchaser's name and identify which guest you are changing the name *from* and provide the name that it should be changed *to*.

*When you arrive at the venue, you should look for the sign for "Ticket Holders" so you don't have to wait erroneously in the "Box Office" line.

*By entering the premises you are giving your consent to be photographed by the Event Managers.

*You are legally bound by New York State Law to have a good time at the show.

Thanks, and see you there!

Mix Master Mike is DJing this, and with all them HipHoppers in attendance, i wouldnt be surprised to see an impromptu set of some sort, not necessarily the bboys.

For what it's worth, MMM's page hasn't been updated with any performances on 10/4. The 10/7 HHHonors is on there but not the 10/4 benefit gig.

This could lead one to believe that they might do an all instrumental/hard-core set with no DJ.

so i e-mailed the gimme shelter people arguing my case that i wasn't notified of the 21+ situation and that i already bought train tickets/ took time off from work.....

...and she wrote back saying that it was unfair.. and since i have tickets and took time off from work that she "feels we should make amends" and that she "has a plan"!!!!!! so i just emailed her my name and the email address i used to buy tickets (i didnt give it before incase i ended up trying to use a fake ID)

wow this is looking good for me!!!!!!

I don't see why acknowledging your fans would get annoying since they are the ones who buy their albums or am I talking to a generation of downloaders who don't buy any music for that matter...... Anyway I would think that true artists like the beastie boys would or could speak to a couple of fans. Maybe, yes, no!!!!

It's not that "fans" are annoying it's that some are fanatics per se.
I've seen people get down right stupid over a famous persons presense. I have a rule I never ask for anything from them. They have given me and the public so much already. There's so much that they do that we don't see.
I've been asked to get an autograph from someone, for someone... I'd never ask for myself (I really dunno what I'd do with such a thing) but it means more to that person than it embarasses me to ask for one, because I guess it's not that odd.
The Ballroom is Japanese themed "Hiro" is a Japanese name. Here is a link (http://www.themaritimehotel.com/hiroBallroom.html) to the hotel site with a picture. You can decide how to dress better after seeing the ballroom. Also it mentions that you agree to be PHOTOGRAPHED so maybe something you wouldn't mind people seeing you in forever is a good choice..
I must work the morning after so I'll be attending the event but not the after party.

It's great to see so many people coming out for this I hope you enjoy your stay in NYC :)

if there are that many groups performing, I think 12 is a bit too much. they would take too much time away from the other groups plus your going to have some speeches and words from the Animal groups.

Im betting 5 or 6 songs....8 at the most.

I don't care if they play 2 songs.
50 bucks is worth it for such a tiny venue in the middle of NYC.
It's going to be completely Ill.
This is a true fans' dream show.

P.S. For those of us old enough to be concerned with this, I'll be writing this off on my federal income taxes as it's a charitable contribution.

the beasties opening for Madonna in 84 at Escapes on long island for $10 admission was a dream show!

Laver1969
09-30-2006, 09:12 PM
P.S. Have they EVER played a venue this small? Not even the CYH tour shows were in places this small.

I saw them do a "Secret Session" in Chicago in 04. They performed 3 songs for an audience of 100 people. I wouldn't really classify the performance as a concert. It was more like we were watching them sound check/practice. Very relaxed, intimate setting.

This benefit gig should be a bit different though. A more concertish feel.

Hmmm...you sure it's Chicago? I don't believe the Chicago show was recorded.

However, they also did a similar-type show in Atlanta. And that one was recorded by the radio station that promoted the show. The did So Watcha Want in Atlanta and not in Chicago.

This just in from Youngremy...there's a silent auction for the miniature fanboat that was used in the Ch-Check It Out video.

MMM is onstage checking out the equipment...and they're probably about an hour away from hitting the stage.

That concert blew my pantaloons off. That was my third B-boy concert. My first was MSG in 99, second was the 9:30 club in DC, 2004. I didn't think the DC show could be topped, but once again, the boys proved me wrong. I was a little worried is was going to be a punk show due to MMM being in Oz a couple of days ago and this being called a "rock" event. Don't get me wrong, b-boy punk is great, but I'd rather hear the classics. When I saw mix setting up his equipment I nearly dropped a deuce.

By, the way - hi, I'm Mike. I was the kid up front w/ the red hat (been around here for years just never posted). To the girl to my right who was getting shoved around, I apologize...I was just trying not to get kicked out of the front myself from being pushed onto the stage.

I'm 26 and often I dress up in the Intergalactic outfit just to post on the messageboard. I don't have the Beastie Boys dolls, but I do have old G.I. Joe's dressed up in the Sabotage outfits. Once in a heated battle between figures, I used an old Tab bottle as a missle and broke it. I ended up slicing my finger and bleeding all over "Mike D.'s" outfit. So now I just pretend that Mike is wearing a fireman's jacket.

Everyone from the message board who attended the show last night earned a special merit badge -- for standing 4 hours before the Beastie Boys took the stage. It was brutal.

The first couple rows of fans in front of the stage were all message board people, which was damn cool. So much solidarity! From the very start of the show, it was evident that everyone in the ballroom was there to see one band: Beastie Boys. I think it might have sucked to be any other band on the stage last night.

The Beastie Boys' set was high energy. They all delivered -- even Mike who appeared to be under the weather (at least I think so). All of us BBMBers marveled at Mike's hair. In fact, someone suggested after the show that we all get perms to commemorate the evening and honor Mike. (That did NOT happen, by the way -- but it should have.)

I can't do a blow-by-blow account of the show. I'm too tired. A group of us went out after the show.

"Slow and Low" as an opener was perfect.

During "Root Down," the weave got a big response. The audience chanted "Go! Go! Go!" in unison. Funny stuff.

The set was about 50 minutes long, like the organizer said it would be. It went by too fast. Although everyone was exhausted from the hours of standing, we would have stood longer to hear more Beastie Boys.

I didn't take a lot of photos and video because I wanted to enjoy the show without fussing with a camera. Bionic and Dandyfop got some really good video. You'll have to wait for them to post. In the meantime, here's one video clip that I took of "Intergalactic" (the sound ain't all that great):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JRjfYqh6bT8

After the show, it was raining, so we all stood around waiting for it to let up. We happened to be standing by the door that the band exited, so some of us got to talk with them. I asked Yauch about new songs. He said that they were working on stuff but that it's all still in the development stages.

Cey came out and visited with us too. Great guy.

More later...

Mira-licious. Thanks.(y)

So what time did the beasties end up taking the stage? Did the other bands suck? or did it just suck to have to wait for the boys?

Sounds like some of you got recognized on stage. What were the pooty shoutouts about?

Any NEW cool mixmaster mike add-ons? For example for slow and low did he use the original beat or the hello nasty tour sorta beat?

I wish I would have went now! Next time im gonna stop procrastinating so much and just DO IT MAN!

Im also happy to see that the first rows were all message board members. I hope you all got to know one another well and got funky.

there was an elevated level that led to the bar stage left of the performance area. there was a small conglomerate of bbmb'ers who held down that area all night, including Documad, Lyneday and her friend, Bionic, and myself...

Documad spotted MMM setting up his turntables at around 9 or 10 PM, and then he mingled in the crowd for a bit...

Pootytang made contact with one of the crew managers from the Pageant Tour, the one featured in Pootytang's adventure (Did you Check to see if it was up Mike's butt?) and Jerome Crooks Angry World... he told Pooty that the band was working on 35 new songs as new material...

it appeared Adam H was wearing the same blue shirt and Mets hat from the NY Post photoshoot that printed yesterday...

And the band did not throw any bones, ie, new material... but any show with Slow and Low, Egg Man, Hello Brooklyn, and No Sleep Till Brooklyn is an instant classic in my book...

there was such bbmb solidarity! i saw a whole bunch of yous even though i didnt socialize much. after waiting that long, i was so exhausted that when the bboys set ended, i had to go outside and get some air. and it was raining! i waled in the rain for like 15 minutes just trying to get my head around the fact that i just experienced one of the most amazing nights of my life.

I got some great video and pics. I was in like the exact same place as I was for the Sundance show. Me and Bionic are going to try to splice something together even though I didn't learn my lesson from last time and you can still hear my white girl ass singing on every song.

Waiting for the Bboys was agonizing, the show felt a little haphazard and poorly planned. In any other situation I probably would have really enjoyed some of the bands, but we were all there for the Beastie Boys.

I go home tonight so I will post pics and video asap. Thanks to everyone at the show who was so nice - Can't believe I was an idiot and had a chance to talk to the boys and was just out of it.

It was less than 1 meter. Haha.

If it makes you feel any better, Adrock thanked people for coming from all over the world to attend the show. He listed places, and Australia was one of them. He was recognizing that Mix Master Mike had just arrived from Australia.

To all: If you could have gone to this show but didn't, you should kick yourself.

What a Legend. Its crazy how much I think about Adrock an idle that KiNg. I friggin record video's of myself rapping Adrock verses then make the voice go over myne so it looks like I have Adrock voice. I got his hair, his dance. I look up to that guy more than anyone on this whole earth.

Wassup everybody. Long-time lurker/seldom poster, but I couldn't let this go by without posting something. I've seen the Boys many times over the years (Worcester Centrum 87 was my first). The only show I can compare this benefit show to was my favorite BBoys show from 1991 at the Building (NYC with Cypress Hill). Intimate and off the hook! Building show still goes down as my #1 but this benefit one just jumped to #2. Slow and Low, No Sleep, Hello Brooklyn were all classic. It felt like the energy from the club shows they did after Check Your Head.

By the way, I was the guy with the Paul's Boutique shirt with my wife on the stairs to the bar. Met a couple of super nice board people but don't know they're BBMB names. Anyway, just wanted to say it was a great show and it was nice to meet you all.

P.S. Are tickets to the Hip Hop Honors show available? I thought it was invite only. Thanks for the help. -Dan

Still doing it, huh...

The Beastie Boys never cease to amaze me! Mike D went 5 for 5 with 7 RBI's, Adrock had two doubles and three stolen bases, and MCA was in prime "praying mantis" mode--turning it on when he needed to.

What a night! The club was intimate, the crowd was bouncing, and if I didn’t bring along three eye witnesses I’d swear that I dreamt the whole thing up.

HIGHLIGHTS:

NEW INTRO
Mix Master Mike showed up with a new intro incorporating more scratches than beat drops. He didn’t go cold turkey though, scratching in Michael Buffer’s “Let’s get ready to rumble!” as the Beasties made their way to the stage (which was probably only a foot or two off the ground--the smallest stage I’ve ever seen them play on).

MIKE D'S HAIR
It’s getting curly and it’s looking great!

COLOR COORDINATED SHIRTS
There’s no way this could be a coincidence, Mike D was wearing red, Adrock in blue, and MCA in green. Three colors in the spectrum were well represented. Just curious though, what happens if Mike D and Adrock show up to the venue with the same colored top? Does one have seniority over the other? Do they have back-up shirts? Do they make dibs on colors beforehand?

LET'S GO METS!
Adrock’s black Mets hat (cocked to the left a bit)! Another reason to love Adam Horovitz, he’s a Mets fan.

MIKE D'S TEA CUP
Between every few songs he took a sip. We’ve seen pimp cups in recent years, but I’ve never seen an MC with a tea cup. He may have been battling a cold, but Mike (aka Clarence) showed up big time, stepping out front for most of the songs. In my opinion he was the game’s MVP.

MMM's BEAT DROPPAGE
He dropped some new ones in there that made my body move like it’s never moved before. However, I do have a question for the Beastie faithful, is there a grace period for when beats can and cannot be dropped? As I’m sure you know, whenever the Beasties play a song from To the Five Boroughs, they’ll rhyme over the entire album instrumental. I was hoping their performance of “Ch-Check It Out” would include some new Mix Master Mike beat drops, but it didn’t. When are they officially allowed to drop in new beats to their latest material? I’m thinking by 2007-08, “Triple Trouble,” “Ch-Check It Out,” and “Right Right Now Now” will all get the special Mix Master Mike treatment.

BROOKLYN
The double shout-out to Brooklyn! The folks at Hiro (the venue) were treated to both “Hello Brooklyn” and “No Sleep Till Brooklyn.”

THE WEAVE
It never gets old! During the breakdown of “Root Down” the Beasties Boys broke into this award winning dance routine, however they did hesitate. Mike D surveyed the stage and quickly commented, “I don’t know if it’s regulation?” MCA and Adrock started making their moves, and before you know it, (on possibly the smallest stage they've ever done it) the Beastie Boys were weaving.

LET'S GO FINGER!
Since we’re in the playoff season, a chant for Mike D’s finger seemed appropriate during the “fresssshhhh” stop-down in “Ch-Check It Out!” Like a champ he dropped the finger, Mix Master dropped the beat, and the Beasties hit another home run out of the ballpark.

BANTER
After “Hello Brooklyn” Mike made a comment to Adrock (I believe it was in reference to the lyric about Nick and his shrimpy, limp appendage). Adrock was claiming that he was just making an observation on the matter. MCA chimed in and said that Adrock was merely being a good journalist. Good inside humor for the Paul’s Boutique purists!

THE ENCORE
You never know what’s going to happen at a benefit concert. Some sound guy could turn on his pocket flashlight, whirl it a couple times, and that could be the end of your set. Before the Beastie Boys performed “Three MC’s and One DJ” they looked off stage and asked how much time was left. After the song, they said that was their last one and exited the stage. Fortunately though, they came back with a sweat-induced “Intergalactic” (in which Adrock curiously skipped over the “D-rrrop”) and a manic, bounce-filled “So What’cha Want?”

Very nice recap of the evening. (y)

To address your question...since MMM has only been with the Beasties for two albums we don't really know how long the grace period is. I don't believe MMM switched up the beats to any HN songs during the HN In The Round tour. So based on that, I would say he'll switch up the beats on TT5B once there is newer album.

I must say, it was nice that Adrock recognized Steve-Onpoint was in the house. That was a highlight for me.

you all are so lucky to be able to go :)
save a place for me for any future performances...because hearing about all your experiences, with all the energy and excitement :D and the awesome setlist (y) really really makes me wanna see the beastie boys up close live and in person! i am truly jealous now, and if i didn't have these responsibilities and things to do over here, i would've dropped everything to see them. heh forgive me, i got right online after school just so i could know what happened! :P

unbelievable, you are all so amazing. let's meet sometime so i could maybe create some memories of my own...well maybe someday i hope that happens. i get pretty hyped after reading your own stuff, it'd be beyond thrilling to be in the midst of it all. beastie boys. you guys. mix master mike. INSANITY.

and mike was sick? seriously, what a guy <3

-Dan

hey dan, it was great to meet you... thanks for the business card... i guess you remembered your screenname when you got home... good times indeed...

The other acts were pretty much hit or miss for me,

More - The lead singer was wearing black nail polish, other than that they weren't too bad. Sort of a Danzig-esque straight Rock Band. I thought they rocked.

they reminded me of the band in 'School of Rock" that the kids have to battle for the grand prize at the end of the film

The Choke - Female led punk band. Pure raw energy every second they were on from beginning to end. Tony Buzzcock of the famed Buzzcocks jumped in in the middle of their set and injected even more raw energy to the performance. If you enjoy NYC punk, you would have loved this.

this was my favorite performance next to the Beastie Boys... The lead singer Cameron was introducing herself to the crowd after their show and handing out buttons and CD's

Sic F*cks - Legendary NYC Punk band. Great energy. At one point I thought my ears were going to bleed and I loved it.

Pootytang was a big fan of the Sick Fucks... high intensity!

Oooh! Thanks for all the stories! Ain't jealous at all.... ;) :p Looking forward to seeing some pics as well!

Still doing it, huh...

HIGHLIGHTS:

MIKE D'S TEA CUP
Between every few songs he took a sip. We’ve seen pimp cups in recent years, but I’ve never seen an MC with a tea cup. He may have been battling a cold, but Mike (aka Clarence) showed up big time, stepping out front for most of the songs. In my opinion he was the game’s MVP.

Actually he was enjoying his brew when they played the PR gig here in Stockholm in May 2004... 45 mins in front of approx 300 people.... Search YouTube for viewings.
