View Full Version : so it's illegal to pump your own gas in new jersey?
how many other states have that law? and why? and what do these people do when they go on vacation out of state and can't find any full service stations? new jersey is a stupid state. "fuel dispensing technicians" pfah

it's actually a brilliant law that should be passed in other states. in the winter, when you are driving, you 'create' lots of static electricity. and when you go pump your gas, you tend to "spark" on the first metallic thing you touch. often, that happens to be your car or the pump while you're pumping, which creates a spark that can then be ignited by the fuel you're pumping. most people dont know that they're supposed to touch a grounded metallic thing before pumping, like the pump station itself, to ground yourself. before you turn into a little match.

Never heard of that. You sure you're not thinking of cell phone radiation? :)
Anyway: Oregon has that law, too.
my grandmother pumped her own gas for at least 55 winters and never blew up.

;) cell phone radiation kills bunnies.
but yea, driving in the winter makes static. havent any of yous experienced that? i think it's the heating system that dries up the air of positive ions or some shit like that. all i know is that i shock myself many times a day between november and march.

I grew up in Indiana (and Indiana winters) and don't remember that ever happening.
And static causing gas station fires....? Seriously -- it makes no sense. Wouldn't every territory north of, say, 40 degrees north have these laws?

and how many times have you heard of someone blowing up from that? It makes sense...but usually people discharge any static when they close the door. I think that is probably just a shade over getting killed by a sting ray in probability.
Anyways...its a good deal. I didn't know the rule and got out and some dude came running out yelling at me to stop. I thought something serious was about to go down but he was like...I gotta pump that for you. Crazy new jerseyians.
actually i remember a news story about this around a year or two ago. but i'm pretty it has something to do with when you get out of car and drag your butt against the seat or your leg against the side of the seat, it's something more than just driving. i kinda remember something about women in high heels being at higher risk too? either way, it almost never happens.
oh and also, while i'm talking about how much i hate new jersey, why the fuck is it so hard to make a fucking left turn in that state?

what i wanna know is - how do they keep their prices lower than us (in ny) and still pay their pumpers? i think theyre ripping us off here. no, make that, I KNOW they're ripping us off here.

see now, that woman just seemed like a doofus to me. she was pulling at her sweater and touching her pants and sitting down while the pump was going, how fucking lazy can you be to go back and sit down in your car? I hate that lady and I'm glad she caught on fire.

See, I always shut my door before I pump and my door's metal so I get one hell of a shocker before I pump. It hurts like fuck, but I guess it's worth not catching on fire.

ok let me get this straight, 1 person maybe dies per year from static electricity at the gas station, so some states decided to ban it. yet over 20000 die each year in the us from guns and yet no one's banning them?
clever folks you've got over there. Really gotta watch out for that static electricity, it's the REAL killer

yeah, there should be a union for it and everything. Or quite simply you could just ban guns for personal use

machetes and molotovs are much more fun anyway
should ban those too
and alcohol, alcohol causes alot of death, we should ban that
cars, they kill people, gotta ban those
rocks, you can bash people with those, gotta get all the rocks off the earth and shoot em into space or something
fire, no more fire, kills people
fists, people use those for fighting, gotta amputate those
seriously though, i'm not a gun nut by any means, i don't own one, don't know anyone who does, don't particularly care on a personal level if i'm allowed to have one or not. but america's gun problem isn't one that you can solve by trying to ban it away. i do think america's too gun crazy, people love their guns around here, including the ones who don't use them for anything criminal, and if you just came in and said "whoops, gotta ban 'em, they're bad for you dudes" there certainly damn well would be a cry about it, to say the least, and oh shit, they've got guns, let's not antagonize them too much
can't solve all your problems by banning 'em is what i'm more or less saying here
and i guess there's some liberty issue or something too i dunno

life's so much better now that that drug problem's gone, i forgot about that
i wouldn't have known there was even a problem if they didn't start arresting people for it, jeez, gotta thank the gov for opening my eyes on that one, whoo!

fair enough. what you guys prolly dont know is 10 years ago there was a massicre in tasmania where a guy shot 27 people, so i government bought back all automatic and semi automatic rifles and made them illegal. then a couple of years later a guy shot up a few ppl at a university and the same thing happened with hand guns. it seems the same thing is happening with the petrol pumps. i was surprised you didn't have a gun buy back scheme after Columbine. i'm sure very few ppl would've been opposed to the idea

edit: by the way in case u were wondering i was involved in competitive target shooting. thats why i had most of em.

do you still have any single shot rifles? you're still allowed them right? did they pay you a fair amount for the ones they repossesed?
