Yo this album is sick I just grabbed the vinyl today. The album features
collaborations with Ghostface Killah, Everlast, Evidence, DJ Revolution, Casual, Moka Only, DJ Babu, DJ Swap, The Alchemist, Planet Asia, Phil The Agony, and more. Beastie Fans will not be dissapointed in this true hiphop album (quite possibly better than TT5B).

Swollen Members are set to release their definitive album, the
forthcoming Black Magic (September 2006, Battle Axe Records). On
the strength of their unique sound and a live show that stands
without comparison in hip hop, Swollen are taking it back to the
basics building a movement one fan at a time. By no means is
this the beginning of the story, as they have been paying their
dues since the 90s when rappers Mad Child and Prevail first
joined forces to release a series of critically acclaimed 12
singles on Mad Childs own label Battle Axe Records. The Rock
Steady Crew-affiliated groups debut full-length, Balance hit
streets in 1999 to a wave of critical praise. Its dark but
aggressive sound combined with Swollen Members reputation for
rocking crowds from LA to Tokyo cemented their position in the
independent hip hop world.

With the release of their sophomore album Bad Dreams in 2001,
Swollen Members saw their music embraced by a widespread
audience in Canada. Commercial radio and video airplay fuelled
Swollen mania, and accolades and awards piled up, including the
Vancouver British Columbia crew winning Juno Awards (Canadian
version of a Grammy) three years in a row. Bad Dreams was
certified platinum in Canada, Balance went gold, and their third
album Monsters in the Closet has also nearly reached platinum
status. Producer Rob The Vikings contributions led to him being
made an official member as Swollen Members became the best
selling hip hop group in Canadian history. Though they spent
several years promoting and touring almost exclusively in
Canada, with no international promotion their records have sold
nearly 500,000 copies worldwide, still through the
ever-independent Battle Axe.

In the wake of this success, Swollen Members pulled back from
the outside world to focus on recording Black Magic. Over two
years in the making, the album largely sees the group returning
to the dark signature sound they have become synonymous with. A
melting pot of introspective lyrics, bookworm intellectualism,
aggressive beats and party-rocking jams, the album features
collaborations with Ghostface Killah (Wu-Tang Clan), Everlast,
Dilated Peoples, Mr. Vegas, Hieroglyphics, The Alchemist, Mix
Master Mike, Planet Asia, Phil The Agony, and more. Storming
out of hibernation with their sights firmly focused on the
United States, Swollen Members are poised to begin an endless
barrage of touring, bringing their renowned live show and sound
to the masses.

yes black magic is a solid album. I wouldn't say its a classic or anything. However it is a huge improvement over their last album. Even though this album is dark, I think it will still take some time for them to go back to the agressive shit that they had on balance and bad dreams.

A friend of mine produced the Mr Vegas track. I'm not really their biggest fan, but they're decent.

not a big fan of that song.... i dunno but songs about smoking pot get redundant to me. I mean I could write long songs about taking oxycontin all day but no would want to hear it... actually some people might. Well whatever.

I do enjoy a record with 20 songs...props for that.

But you can't put out a song called Too Hot a month after J5 drops Red Hot with the same sample.

yeah its unclear who had that sample first. I mean yes technically J5 came out first, but the black magic single 12" had that song on it last year. I wonder why the hell they used the EXACT same sample....?

On another note from the website:

Now thats what I'm talking about
Yesssssssss!!!! You guys rule the earth. Black Magic debuted as the #1 Universal release at Wal Mart and the #2 release at HMV in Canada. We are the #10 indie release in the States and that includes all genres of music. What a start. Monday night in Montreal I went clubbing with my boy Malik Shahid from Musique Plus. We had a blast. Last night we rocked the Bell Centre hard. Great crowd. We got shouts from Rihanna's DJ and two shout outs from Appple de Ap and Taboo from the Peas. Yeah boyee. Apres la performance, we hit a club called Orchid and debuted Dynamite ft. Mr Vegas. Heads were feeling it. Next we rolled to L'opera. A big club that was banging. We celebrated the release of Black Magic and then went for food. Woke up to the sound of pouring rain on the bus. We are in Ottawa tonight and my Aunt and Uncle and two cousins are coming. I don't get to see them very often so I'm excited. Life is a great gift my friends, don't take it for granted. Your homie through thick and thin, P.
