I agree. What the hell?

Can some "brilliant" Brit explain this esoteric "shit?"

well see, that's the thing with art, some people get it and some don't. here's a picture of a yo-yo (http://www.usmadetoys.com/yo%20yo.jpg) for you guys to look at.

can you seriously not even appreciate his/her/their skill from a technical standpoint? if you disagree with the content, that's cool, fine, but the art itself is certainly far from "shit".

examples:
http://www.banksy.co.uk/menu.html
http://www.banksy.co.uk/outdoors/palestine/index.html#

even if you're just painting on an easel or something, that's pretty talented, but doing it in a public place (or the west bank security wall apparently) without being caught takes something else. even if you don't like it, that's fine, it's all subjective but i find it really hard to believe that you can't even understand how ANYONE could like it.

by the way, you just agreed with chrisd, think about that for awhile

I called it "shit" because I was quoting the original post.

I guess I'm just not erudite enough to appreciate what apparently passes for "art" nowadays.

Michaelangelo, Dali, Rubens, etc. are more my style.

I still don't get the original posted "click" on the first post.

I have no idea who chrisd is and really don't care. If he's right about questioning what's "great" about it, then I'll go along in that case.

If your only argument is that it is brave to deface property without being caught, well, then, I guess freaking taggers throughout the world should rejoice.

no, that wasn't my only argument. all i meant by that was that it adds some spice to his art. any douchebag can write his name on a wall with spraypaint, but not many bother to actually create something of substance. but even in isolation he's got talent (http://www.banksy.co.uk/indoors/02_2.html) (and i know that these are based off existing paintings, don't bother pointing that out).

i guess if you have the bar set at michaelangelo then i'm not going to try to convince you to like banksy. michaelangelo's pretty good, most people aren't that good, i will give you that. if you don't like artists that are worse than michaelangelo, then i guess i can understand how you don't get how people can like banksy.

...which is also the point of the pieces.

Thanks for the link. I enjoyed it. That second link on Bob's post is killer. The horse's head poking out of the wall . . . .

Have I ever explained how much I hate renaissance art? I agree with Mark Twain on that.

About a year ago Ace42X posted this site on an art link in the Beastie General. He mentioned Banksy was his current fav artist.

Which leads me into my where is Ace42X rant?

Yes, for two reasons. One is that those look like old school Target shopping carts. Two is that I don't like paintings that resemble the background, so it's a perfect combo.

I love the wall thing because I can imagine myself walking along there and then stumblind across the fake window or the horse's head and going "waaa?"

1200 years from now when the internet is lost completely because nothing actually tangible or physical exists here and 98.8% of the horseshit that passes as "gallery art" nowdays ends up in dumpsters, future archeologists and art enthusiasts will dust off the subway tunnels, scorched cars and concrete overpasses and find the keys they were searching for to define the world that was lost. In that they'll look at bansky's stuff in particular.

banksy is firing on all cylinders right now, his Paris Hilton remix "Thats Hot (http://stilllistentogangstamusic.blogspot.com/2006/09/pass-cookbookhot.html)" (scroll down for the short version) is 40 minutes of Paris giving what sounds like to me a presidential campaign speech.

plus his art hit the front page of the NYTimes and LATimes last week. For good and bad reasons.

If it needs to be explained to you then you will never ever get it.
