Lucky Star - Madonna

Rock The Casbah - The Clash
This is why I love you.

I'd pick He's a Rebel by The Crystals instead, but god bless for picking the Crystals. I'd pick the same Prince song and My Best Friend's Girl for the Cars. But then again -- Lucky Star? Eww.

Even if I disqualify disco and soul songs, this is too hard. A few random choices off the top of my head (mine are all hits):

Jackson 5 - ABC
Violent Femmes - Gone Daddy Gone
Gary Numan - Cars
Police - Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic
Pointer Sisters - I'm So Excited
Rolling Stones - Out of Time
EW&F - Shining Star
Monkees - Valeri
No Doubt - Just A Girl
Replacements - I Will Dare
Hall & Oates - You Make My Dreams
Four Tops - I Can't Help Myself
Crowded House - Don't Dream It's Over
Sweet - Ballroom Blitz

And everyone has to say My Sharona and Love Will Tear Us Apart, right?

Why you gotta front on Madge like that?

I'd say I Want You Back for The Jacksons, She's Gone for Hall & Oates and So Lonely for The Police if it were trimmed down by about a minute.

Man! I thought about So Lonely. I thought including it in a threesome with Message in a Bottle.

My favorite Hall & Oates song is actually Family Man, but it's so over the top dreadful I couldn't list it. And Rich Girl is very special to me because of a running joke with my childhood best friend.

Bob, you're right. It's impossible to pick a Cars song. My second favorite is Since You're Gone though.

I want some Talking Heads or at least the Tom Tom Club song.

R.E.M - Fall on Me or Texarkana.

[I was in college when Madonna hit. He inability to sing made it impossible for me to like her. I know that she's taken classes since then and I applaud her for that. I can tolerate a few of her songs now, like Frozen or whatever it's called off the Orb CD.]

Depeche Mode - "Just Can't Get Enough"
i don't know what it is about this song, but it just makes me...so...angry...

Death Cab For Cutie - "The Sound of Settling"
nah. i wouldn't call this "pop." just because he says "bah bah" a lot...nah.

obviously a lot of Postal Service tracks would work, too (brand new colony and clark gable being my personal favorites, and i'm sure everyone can agree that such great heights is a force with which to be reckoned or at least reco'nized), but the first collabo Ben Gibbard did with Dntel on "(This is) The Dream of Evan and Chan" is pretty much perfect in my eyes.

Of Montreal - "Wraith Pined to the Mist"
ohhh yeah. love this tune. i think a lot of of montreal tracks would fit this bill.

and no one can deny the powerhouse that was and is H & O.

i'm going to add:

Doves - "Pounding" and "Black and White Town"

OH! white town - "your woman" is a DAMNED fine addition.

a great deal of costello's catalogue could fit here too. "welcome to the working week" is short, sweet, and catchy as hell.

Yep. Apparently, it's credited as "I Can't Breakaway," which I think is shortened on the original album.

It was a promo LP we got when I worked at a record store, and in small doses, it was pretty cool. The lady could wail, the harmonica was good, the beat was huge, etc. They came in right after the Eurythmics.

Seriously, half of these songs aren't even pop songs. They're like stadium anthems and shit people play at funerals for their hippie stoner uncles. A good pop song really should at least include three of the five following criteria, I think:

1) be under 4 minutes (ideally 3)
2) be somewhat "popular" (or have had the potential to have been popular)
3) have a melody you can whistle/hum/play with one finger on a piano
4) not have confusing indiscernible lyrics and/or some whiney dude depressing the hell out of you singing
5) not have a 15 minute guitar solo

Why can't we just stick to Pop Pop, though? Actual Pop. Like Pop. We all knew what the initial post was getting at. You could force consideration for Stairway To Heaven if you really really tried, I'm sure.

Come on!

You've shot the Smiths and Morrisey through the heart. *angry eyes*
