oh shit! i have a lesson for you guys! don't leave banana peels in an uncovered garbage bag in your room for a week! i actually already knew this but i'm lazy and chose to ignore it and now i have fruit flies. not like, swarms of them, but enough so that i see them fairly regularly. in my bedroom. that's gross!

naturally i've thrown out the garbage and everything remotely fruit related in my room (soda cans, too). i did some reading on the little bastards and it sounds like i've gotten rid of all their breeding sources. will they just eventually die and go away now? or am i stuck with them until i murder them all in a more active fashion? my room's not very dirty, i've only been here 3 weeks and aside from the banana peel thing, i'm pretty neat about food waste, so i'm fairly sure i've gotten rid of everything they can possibly survive on. surely they'll just die and go away now, right? anyone have any useful experience with this kind of thing?

Bob

this is all very helpful but getting rid of them, what do i have to do to get rid of them? or will they just die on their own (and not come back)?

this is no doubt revenge for the experiments we did with fruit flies in high school biology class. i was just following orders!

Fruit flies are odd. Where do they live?

Bob
09-15-2006, 07:50 PM
on rotting produce, apparently. and drains. they also like beer and soda

Yeti

Do they just appear?

Bob
09-15-2006, 07:53 PM
that was the common theory back in the day. "spontaneous generation", they called it. they noticed that if you left out a piece of meat, fruit flies would appear on it seemingly out of nowhere. then some smart italian guy got the idea of putting a cloth over the meat, and pow, no more flies. then from that, they somehow figured out where they came from.

i don't know myself, now that i think about it. somehow they find it and lay eggs, but they only live for a few days, so i don't know how they find it so quickly? however they work, i hate them and i don't understand their part in god's plan

So TurdBergler is the fruitfly of the BBMB.

I went on vacation once and I had a jar of spicy seasoning with the lid closed tight. I got back from vacation and there were these strange little flies in it. They didn't quite look like fruit flies but almost similar. That was very odd too. How did they get in there?

See---this mystery of the fruit fly is really buggin me.

Bob

my only guess is that the eggs were in the jar when you bought it. i read the wikipedia article on frutiflies and i'm an expert on this kind of thing now, so you can just come to me with any questions you have

edit; lol fruitiflies i'm keeping it

Do they respond to a pile of dog crap or just fruit?

ericlee

i imagine that if I were a measly little fruit fly, I wouldn't want to go onto a pile of shit where the big assed robotic looking shiny green bottle flies roam.

Bob

i believe fruit flies specifically are drawn towards only certain kind of breeding grounds. i'm not sure that dog shit is one of them but it wouldn't surprise me, the filthy bastards.

they aren't so bad now, there's only one or two that i see regularly. i'm going to make them my pets. the little one's freddie and the littler one is harmon.

i'm gonna miss the little guys when they die. or when i accidentally eat them. i'm sure i've eaten a few by now.

true, but i would also want to avoid the gigantic titan humans that are 1,000,000,000x my size and loathe my existence. AND YET THEY WON'T LEAVE ME ALONE

ericlee

but yet these gigantic humans leave fruit for them and give them names. What more can you ask for?

touche!

you've got me there i'm afraid

seriously though, i don't understand how certain bugs haven't developed a survival instinct by now! we've been coexisting for how long? surely they should know to be afraid of us by now, but no.

i'm doing my part, though

Fruitflies are very prolific insects. They live for several weeks and just eat and breed. What a life?!

here in south australia no ones allowed to bring fruit over the border into our state, so we are the only state in australia to be completely fruit fly free!!!!!

what an achievement.

on the other hand instead of fruit flies we have inland taipans, (the deadliest snake in the world) the brown snake (the 3rd deadliest snake in the world) and redback spiders and whitetail spiders (the 2nd and 4th deadliest spiders, respectively).

damn.

the other day i was making lunch then sat down on the couch, and a massive white tail spider was on the couch and ran up my leg. the lunch ended up on the floor.

...suddenly i'm happy to have fruit flies, that's nuts. i would probably last about 3 minutes in australia. i hate bugs and spiders and scorpions and snakes and worms and shit like that, hate them hate them hate them. i'd rather deal with constant handgun death threats (apparently) than that

in fruit fly news, i haven't noticed any in the last hour or so. i'm beginning to suspect i've accidentally eaten them all :o

This happened to me a few weeks back.
I decamped to the sofa after one night to avoid a snoring man, and it appeared a messy child had abandoned a banana skin in little used bin.

As I tried to sleep they swarmed about the living room, but I cannot kill insects, so I lit a candle as they appear attracted to light, and they sat by it all night, and in the morning, they were all dead.

What's really pissing me off right now is daddy long legs and flies made daft and weak by the cold. Big, fat flies off the cows head this way every time I open a window, and they know no fear. i can catch the dozy things in glass with bits of card ad put them out, they're that slow.

yooooo

EVERY fruit has their eggs in it, you digest them when you eat fruits

i'm pretty sure we don't have fruit flies here, which is why our customs is so strict on not letting anything vegetable related enter the country. that doesn't sound right. i dunno. i know there's something we don't have that we don't want
