My friend is going to Europe for 3 months and wants to know where the best pubs are in Europe. He'll be in Ireland, Germany, France, Italy, Switzerland, Finland, Sweden, Poland, Greece, and some of Eastern Europe. Not England, though.
So, suggestions? He'll be sticking to the main touristy cities no doubt.

The Irish Pub in Mainz Germany is one of my favorite places to drink!

Beer in Poland costs like 60p/$1.12! Krakow is fantastic. I think you'll find the nicest best rubbadubs in the Irish countryside. I've never been to Dublin, but I've been around the countryside lots and there's nothing like having a bevvy up there in the clear Irish air.
I don't associate countries like France as ones to go pubbin' in though. He should pick up some guides at the airports. I know that's an obvious suggestion but I think this suggests why it might be best:
The Irish Pub in Mainz Germany is one of my favorite places to drink!
I'm not being a bitch to Tone, I think you'll get a lot of people naming pubs they like that aren't necessarily the best. An Irish pub in Germany is the best to Tone but your friend is looking for THE BEST in a certain European capital, it's no good, knahmeen?

You can't go to Germany and not stop by Frankfurt, that's just outrageous and Mainz is only about 15 to 30 minutes (depending on who's driving) from Frankfurt. Certainly worth it. The Irish Pub, Mainz.

yeah, don't go to horrible 'irish' pubs not in.. ireland. if you want an irish pub, go to one in the bloody country!
the long hall in dublin is great. and not too touristy. i visited the home of a REAL LIFE dubliner, i'll have you know.
foggy dew.
the porterhouse (http://www.porterhousebrewco.com/) is good, too, but a wee bit more mainstream. but when i was there it did an EXCELLENT chocolate fudge stout! that's like chocolate guinness! totally delicious.
also the temple bar - SUPER touristy but good fun.
and others.
you're not really short of finding a good pub in dublin. you'd have to be pretty stupid not to.

I'm not giving any tips to anyone that spends three months in europe and doesn't come to Amsterdam.
Mainly because my tips wouldn't be any good if he won't even come here.

Have you ever eaten at Tango? It's an Argentinean steakhouse near the Red Light District. Awesome food.

There are about six million steak houses in Amsterdam. I seem to have skipped that particular one.
Did you visit the Chinese district right next to the red light district?
Best food in town.

No, but dude, I bet there is a hundred or 4. Whatever you do, don't eat at some run down Turkish joint near Staalstraat. Worst steak ever.

I could rather recommend rock clubs than pubs...
In Stockholm you gotta visit Debaser and Debaser Medis, in Gothenburg Sticky Fingers and in Helsinki Tavastia and Nosturi (best places for gigs in those towns...).
My favourite pubs in Stockholm have dissappeared and still haven't found good ones to replace them. There's quite a few English or Irish pubs around town; Limerick, Galways, Tudor Arms, Dubliner, Shamrock, but the ones I hang out most are Brother Tuck (my ex-brother in law works there), Old Beefeater In (good food and close to the busses to the archipelago where some of my friends live), Oliver Twist (great choice of beers, but expensive) and then there's Akkurat with 280 different whiskeys and a huge selection of beers as well.
In Helsinki I go where my friends take me and I never remember the names of the places (Roskabaari was one of them at least), in the near future I might be able to check out the pub life a bit more (I usually just go to gigs there, or eat at restaurants). There used to be a place called Soda that was really cool and hip and great, but I don't know if it exists anymore. When is your friend leaving?
In Gothenburg I've just gone to the nearest pubs closest to the venues before the gigs... can't really recommend anything there.

Message from my friend Ben, who read the thread:
"theres some great suggestions there. i'm travelling with 3 friends, so if any of your friends are interested in hitting the bars up with a friend of a friend (that they've never actually met) plus at least 3 other guys, let me know. we know how to have fun, so it would be a blast regardless...."
Anyone up for showing Ben a good time when he's in your vicinity? He's a great guy, and so are his friends. Let me know.... Brett can more than vouch for him. ;)

I wouldn't be very good at suggesting pubs in Dublin, im from a different town and have a fairly strong dislike for our capital (despite the fact ill be going to college there for a year now), whenever i'm in the Das Kapital my more learned friends take me to the pub and i never know where they are....
Whats kind of funny now is that, we all know there are Irish pubs all over the world, and obviously every pub in Ireland thus, is an "irish pub", well until now that is. because billions and billions of Polish people have moved here, we now have..POLISH PUBS! hehe...never been in one though.
So...yeah...i dont have an answer at all for your question.

It's an IRISH PUB. They served German beer as well as beer from all over. The point is that it's a NICE PLACE TO DRINK... FUCK!

Dude, that whole Irish pub thing is way too complicated for me. Why do they sell GERMAN beer if it it is an IRISH pub? Or ALLOVERISH beer? And what's with those stupid quizzes?

haha, even though i am weary to support otis for he once labelled me 'by far the most disturbing person on this board' i gotta say, tone, that irish and german pubs are from two very different and distinct (and proud) drinking traditions and trying to combine the two in some weird sorta not really irish but not really german just.. meh pub is sorta crap.
if you want german beer: go to a german pub.
if you want irish whisky/stout: go to an irish pub.
fair enough, if, say, the irish pub was in a place like.. uh.. i dunno, somewhere lame.. skye! the isle of skye! fair enough if it was in skye where they don't really have a strong drinking tradition, but germany?! that's some hardcore beer history right thurr.
tis nothing personal, kiddo! i am sure it is a great pub to experience, but not when you have limited time in the country and have to be exposed to the great local bars/history/culture.

You weirded me out cause you had the hots for the French soccer coach and were so open about it. Now I'm ashamed! There is a whole thread dedicated to banging geezers so I just felt like a 16th century orphan time transported to Studio 54 in the 70s.
But I think the Babylonians invented beer, hence the name ;-)

why can't you grasp the concept that if someone is a tourist in GERMANY they want to go to GERMAN pubs of a DEUTSCHE nature and when they are tourist in IRELAND they want to go to IRISH pubs of a CELTIC nature?
ya dig?
don't get aggressive, like. i was being polite to you. i am certainly not stupid, dear.

Mainz sucks!
... but I'm saying this cause our soccer rivalry.
And BTW what exactly is the guy looking for in a drinking place has to be considered. There are places you can't have a decent drink because no one will leave you alone, or that are too expensive, but then again, you need not worry, in Europe the next watering hole is never far!
