Good. If U would rather give up then ask me 4 clarification on the things I type then your not trully trying to understand me (as edvident with this thread). With all the bigots, bipolar and/or pompous people on here you list me, espically considering you might not have read a good portion of my post done in a serious vain. I don't think he's trying to say he doesn't understand them like, why they act the way they do or why they say the things they do, I think he's just trying to say it's hard to read their posts sometimes.

I know it's hard for me to read fucktopgirl because of broken English. Not her fault because English is pretty different from most of the languages out there, but still hard to follow sometimes.

actually i'm not even sure if common acronyms like "wtf" and "lol" are even leet. leet speak is a little nerdier. mostly used in video games. words like "pwnd" and "nubs" and such. replacing letters with numbers is DEFINITELY leet speek. words like h4x0rz, for example

Bob
09-17-2006, 10:55 PM
So every post I type out I write like that? Stereotyping Bobby?

ok, whoa

1) i was using the no vowels thing as an extreme example of a way of typing that's hard to read but still manages to convey meaning with enough effort. my point was that even though you still CAN understand there's really no reason to do it. nobody expects anyone to use the queen's english around here, but it would be nice if it were at least immediately comprehensible. your typing's better than THAT, but it's still hard to read, it's true, sorry.

2) what the hell are you talking about, stereotyping? all i'm saying is that you, g-mile, you, have sloppy typing. that's it. i don't know what stereotyping has to do with any of this. i'm not using your sloppy typing to make any judgments about your personality or generalize anything about anything else, all i'm saying is that you're hard to read. end. of. idea.

The Notorious LOL

i still don't get what you mean by stereotyping your typing though. all i'm saying is that it's often hard to read (even if you're not being serious i guess). it's like, am i stereotyping my car by saying that it's a honda? i don't understand

I'd think that with less letters like that, I should be able to read it faster but that's the point. I'm actually reading it just as it is..

Maybe it's the newer generations. Maybe the younger folks can zip right through it and mirror a response. I've never seen that type of typing till about 3 years ago and it's mainly done by the younguns.

Hell, I don't know. I was just thinking of something stupid to say about it:o

True story though...When my wife first came to the states, we went to eat breakfast and she's never had pancakes before and she started dousing Tobasco sauce on her pancake. I was all like, "What the hell?" and told her to flip her pancake over so that noone would see the sauce on it. haha..

I just feel sometimes that due to whatever reason (comments I have made in the past, pictures, popularity, or race) I'm allowed less lee-way then some of the "stalwart" members on here (even the assholes get ripped less on serious acts then I with items such as typing). Its annoying that even after 3 years (although my post count doesn't reflect it) I'm getting ripped about "noob"/"nerd" type of issues. Some of the other members have brought this to my attention.

If not understanding someone is why you're not understanding what someone is trying to say and if what they're saying is you don't understand them when they are saying what they want you to understand, then you can't expect them to understand you, because you have to understand that what they're saying is if you can't seem to understand that they don't understand you, not because you are the one that can't understand them and not because they can't understand what you're saying about not understanding what they're saying when you're saying you can't understand them, but that you're not understanding where they're coming from even though they feel like what they're saying is understandable to them and that you should be able to understand it too.

p.s. the "y" in "type" is acting as a vowel.

p.p.s. the other day, cordo's boyfriend said to me "have you ever heard of poutine?" and I said, "vladmir?" and he laughed. PUNS.

QueenAdrock

HOW THE HELL DO YOU KNOW IT'S A VOWEL

and you should really try poutine. It's a heart attack you eat with a fork.

Dorothy Wood
09-18-2006, 12:08 PM
because it sounds like "i", and you could very well replace the "y" with an "i", because the "e" at the end automatically makes the first vowel long.

QueenAdrock
09-18-2006, 12:10 PM

Dorothy Wood

no...I think that's different. because when two vowels go a'walkin', the first one does the talkin'. so if the "y" were a vowel, "boy" would sound like "bo".

Someone attempting to communicate needs to accept a certain amount of personal responsibility, if "communication" is indeed the goal. (Dadaists can apply elsewhere.)

For instance: when I was a kid, my mom would often yell from the other end of the house, "A-Z -- ? Go get the thing; it's over there."

I'd deliberately bring her the most ridiculous item I could think of, and she'd be exasperated, complaining, "YOU KNOW WHAT I MEANT!!!"

Um -- no I didn't. Only a mind reader could.

Sometimes posts here are a somewhat better version of that. On more than one occasion, I'm the reader who screwed up and didn't pay close enough attention to what was originally written in a post; more often than not, though, someone starts protesting that people are "taking it wrong," only later to post certain critical information which hadn't yet appeared.

Worse yet, in my mind, are the folks who presumably should know English and a certain amount of grammatical structure, but just can't be bothered to shoot for clarity. Misunderstanding at best, lack of respect, or simple dismissal at worst is an inevitable result, and, really, what right does someone have to get upset if that's the result?

I don't think anyone clicks on a thread hoping that the respondants don't make sense. It's frustrating when that's the case. It's a message board, and the form itself imnfers communication rather than a certain disdain for connection.

A teacher once told me he felt an author of a book or short story has an obligation to hook the reader in some way, and make the reader want to keep reading. As a writer, you can scrap that idea at your own peril, but it's unfair to cry foul when your style is alienating or misleading and then you find yourself misunderstood or ignored.
