Seriously, if you don't work at one then don't consider it.

When I'm done here I will never, ever do this shit again.

It's been busy as fuck all fucking day. I've had to put up with some real nimrods too that don't know what they're doing.

I've been trying to watch The Wire Season 3 and didn't even get finished with the first disc. I'd sit down, unpause it for 3 seconds and another shitwad has to interrupt my viewing time.

I'd try to make a post.. Get in the middle of my post and another dippy do appears and I'd take care of them and forget what I was going to type.

I stood by my window thinking it was clear and let out a nice poot and as soon as it was finished, here comes another one just in time to raise her nostrils and cringe.. I know she smelt it. She couldn't hide it.

Fuck this shit. 18 more days and I'm through!!

how rude of them, making you work like that!

seriously though, i hear ya. customer service jobs wouldn't be so bad if you were just allowed to be a jerk to clearly unreasonable customers. i mean there's being professional, and then there's just being a punching bag. "what?! your prices are too high!!! fuck you!!!" "oh, sorry about that sir, let me bring that issue up at the next board meeting. oh wait! i'm a cashier! get out"

I don't work in a store. Can't really get too descriptive but I still deal with "customers" and they're a pain in the ass and they do try to pull some shit and complain about shit that I have no control over.

I do however, remind them that as a civilian, I outrank their ass and they can STFU.

You know what really bothers me? I do work for people with their PHDs, yet they have no idea how to thoroughly read emails. Look, I know you're busy. You have lots of projects you're working on. But it takes TWO MINUTES to read an email that has 3 sentences in length.

Me: "We tried everything to get this for you. We tried many different places, including GWU, GMU, and UMD. They are going to get it in stock in a few weeks, so we will re-request it then. -Diana."

Them: "Can you request it from UMD please? They're good with ordering, so they should have it in by now."

Most of the time I just copy and paste what I said before, but every so often I'll add in a nonchalant "Like I've said previously..." before the re-paste.

I worked in the sales call center for a computer company for eight years, six of them as a manager. I never stopped being amazed at the sense of entitlement someone could buy for $29 plus shipping.

David Sedaris fans will recognize my favorite line ever. In his story about his time as Krumpet the Christmas elf at Macy's, he overhears his boss saying, "And when you go to the store manager, don't tell him I called you a bitch. Tell him I called you a FUCKING bitch." Oh, if only...

Customer service work is pretty gratifying, I always thought. The unpleasant people are a pretty small percentage, and it's a good feeling to know that you're helping people find what they want, especially if you do have to go out of your way a little bit.

Customer service, in general, is in such horrible shape these days, I can't imagine contributing to the downward spiral.

I always enjoyed helping people too, but some people just don't want to be helped. They WANT to take out the frustrations of their day on you, or they want the universe to rearrange around them. The thing is, EVERY job is a customer service job, you always have a customer of some sort to take care of, but most people don't get that.

Now and again, some cutomers could be a little insane, but I guess that just seemed like such a minority that it didn't bug me too much.

What did drive me mad was working for a church for so many years, and trying to provide "customer service" to some of those folks. My god. The ratio between sane and insane probably went to about 50/50, which starts feeling like 90/10. That was nuts, and it's easy to understand why the mortality rate of so many people's ministry careers is diving. Easy, easy way to get burnt out.
