View Full Version : Best '80s "new wave/post-punk/college rock/whatever the heck you'd call 'em" band?

Not sure if there's one term that would best represent all these bands, other than the fact these are all British artists and their breakthroughs were in the '80s and appealed to an "alternative" or "college rock" (whatever that is) sort of audience.

But enough of that, the music should speak for itself...

The Cure released Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me.

I would think that would be the end of the discussion in itself.

Bunnymen for sure!
Along with Bauhaus they were my biggest favourite in the 80's, and the latest album is brilliant as well!

I'd have to go Depeche Mode mainly due to their longevity.

Cure second for sure.

Same here! (y)

But with the exception of The Smiths, all these bands are still recording new music. But DM has the most consistency.

id have to go with the smiths unless new order includes joy division.

Yeah, sorta. But they're disqualified (in this context) since they're American, not British.

Guess who i saw djing the other day at parklife festival! Peter Hook! And he was fucking shite! Didnt even dj played with the knobs but didnt actually do anything, like he'd play with the knobs to get the flanger effect, but then he'd step back and have a smoke, and you'd realise the fucking flanger effect was part of the track. And he couldnt mix for shit. Selected some good new order remixes though, played 7 remixed tracks that hes played on, 5 new order remixes and 2 joy division ones.

Guilty pleasures need not apply.

I have no idea what you would call those bands together. It seems like Pet Shop Boys should be in there. But that's just me. I have a friend who would name all of them (plus Pet Shop Boys) as her favorite college bands so that's probably why I'd group it that way. I think of it as 80s techno, but that doesn't fit all of them either. Oh well.

For me "new wave" is Elvis Costello and Talking Heads. "College rock" is (early) R.E.M., (early) U2, Midnight Oil, and Violent Femmes.
