so i have this project i'm working on for our spare room. i bought a ton of colored vinyl 45s (20 to be exact) on the cheap for a decoration (see here) (http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d164/105cosmo/environment8.jpg)but i'm not sure exactly what i should do with them. i've already decided that i'm printing out pictures of some of our favorite bands and stuff like that, and gluing them over the labels on the records (one of them is Korn, and i'd rather not have that on display). but i can't decide if i want to arrange them somehow on the mirror in the room (steger's kind of not liking that idea), on the wall in between posters and such, or something else 2-d. what i think i'd really like to do is somehow suspend them all from the ceiling. that'd require considerably more work (gluing the pictures to both sides of each record), and i'm not sure how to go about suspending them. probably some hooks would work, but i don't want to fuck up the ceiling as this is a rental.

i think the mirror would look the best, and i figure if i used a glue gun, it wouldn't be hard to take them off when we move. but i think matt's really against that idea. he's always ruining my fun.

anyway, anyone have any suggestions?

Glue them together into a flat amorphous shape, then buy a flourestent light fixture and attach it to the back, so there is a 2" gap between the flat amorphous record shape (would sort of look like a cloud) then attach it to the wall. Kind of like a wall-light, or lighted sculpture. I think it would be neat, esp with those see-through records.

Ask a gay guy, he would know what to do. Like the Fab Five! They really change people's lives.(y)

I'd rather make a mobile (http://www.uniqueprojects.com/projects/mobile/mobilebig.jpg) than glue on a mirror.

That's a great idea! (y)

hrm. that sounds interesting. but maybe a little over my head.

yeah, i think the mirror idea is out.

a mobile would be rad. i could hang it from a corner...hrm. interesting. i'm just not sure how to go about making it.

the thing is, the walls are kind of out. they're already covered with posters. there are a few gaps here and there where i could fit a few of them, but i'd kind of like to keep them off the walls.

what about hotglueing the vinyls to the ceiling? OR to the furniture?

we had vinyls on the furniture at my radio station until just about... 4 months ago.

our apartment (just like every other damn building in southern california) has that ugly-ass cottage cheese shit on the ceilings

Can't you make some kind of 'curtain' out of it? So you have to go through a wall of vinyl to get to your kitchen/bedroom.

OR:
get a cheap glass table, glue them to the bottom and put a light underneath it. Or get a glass plate and put table legs under 'em or something.

okay, well, if you use hot glue, it's going to show through if they're clearish. making mobile-type things would be easiest with fishing line. you'll see it a bit, but it won't be too noticable. weave the fishing line through each record and attach them together...umm, shit, this hard to explain in writing. like loop it around...shit, ima draw it.

here (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v350/sarkyd/recordmobile.jpg)

and the you can just hang it from the ceiling from one of these mamma jammas. (http://images.acmehardware.com/200x200/4883963.jpg)

you should be able to keep the records flat or turn them. glue probably won't work very well on records, but if you would like to make skra's wall sculpture, your best bet would be to fuse the plastic together using a soldering iron or acrylic or pvc liquid glue, which actually melts the plastic together with chemicals.

god speed.

Yes, my thoughts exactly. The thought of glue on those beauties makes me cringe.

I say drill four small holes around each record so that they're evenly perpendicular, then hook them all together with small s-hooks in rows of even amounts and hang them from a rod in front of a window. That would be rad.

Arrange like so. Pretend the line is a simple, streamlined curtain rod and the dashes are s-hooks lol. There would have to be s-hooks connecting the rows from top to bottom as well, of course.

i know how to make a bracelet out of one too. but it works better with an EP instead of a 45. :)

thanks a ton for all your suggestions, dudes. and yeah, sark, i was going to use fishing line and probably a hook like that. my only concerns would be it getting too heavy for the hook, and having to use a lot of them so as to not fuck up the ceiling. i like what you suggested though.

the only thing about having it in front of a window is we have those hideous vertical blinds and aren't allowed to take them off. :\

and no way would i use hot glue on the actual record. duh. that's what the middle is for.

why not replace the blinds with the records?
