I bought this a couple days ago and it's very different from the other Final Fantasies.

From what I've been playing of it so far, it's a shooting based game. Not too bad.

I just want to know if there is anybody who's had time to play this and give me some insight on it. I've been so damn busy lately and can't find the time to play it.

When I do, what can I expect? I just now finished the tutorial so go ahead and throw some spoilers at me.

Final Fantasy 7 is a role playing game for the Playstation. It's set in a world that has highly advanced technology, to the point that it's hurting the planet itself. You start out witnessing a eco-terrorist group called AVALANCHE, sabotaging one of the Mako Reactors held in the futuristic city, Midgar. These reactors, and essentially the whole city, are run by the electric company, Shinra. From there, the story takes twists and turns, and it involves other factors, that go far beyond a greedy monopoly of a corporation.

From the beginning, I was interested in the ranks of business people that worked for Shinra. These were the men and women in power. I have never seen villians such as them before in a role playing game, to that extent. It has always been about some medieval empire that terrorized the world by force. However, in Final Fantasy 7, it was much more about politics and a false sense of comfort, with the Mako energy, that was withering away the life from the planet slowly.

I don't know what you mean by shooting game, but the battle system in the game is turn based, meaning that you take turns attacking with your enemies, which come in the form of random encounters. That means that while you're walking around the world map or dungeons, you'll go to a different screen each time you have to fight enemies, where as, everyone lines up on opposing sides, where you work with a menu based system, such as commands - Fight, Magic, Defend, and Items. There is also a leveling system, which is common (I should say a standard) in most role playing games, and particularly the Final Fantasy series. The more levels your characters gain, the stronger you become. It's also important to update your weapons, armor, and accessories frequently, by buying them from shops in towns, so that the status of your characters are raised, such as Offense, Defense, Magic Defense, Agility, and so on.

Then there is the Materia system, which is the magic system in the game. Basically, you equip these colored balls called Materia. Each color represents a specific function. For example, green represents offensive magic. You can buy Materia in Materia shops, and also find them scattered throughout the world of Final Fantasy 7. Also, the better equipment you have equipped, the more slots you're given to equip your Materia on.

While I'm at it, I'll give a conclusion to this long post. I consider Final Fantasy 7 to be one of the more memorable games I've ever played. It's gotten a bad rap over the years, because of Square Enix's intentions to create new installments of the story, in which, I'm speaking of the Compilation of Final Fantasy 7. Otherwise, it's a great game. It introduced many, many people to role playing games, undoubtedly, which some say is a double edged sword, partly because of their preference that all role playing games must look and play like interactive movies. On the other hand, it turned an otherwise niche following (at least in North America, at the time) to a huge success, world wide.

People can say what they wish when Final Fantasy 7 comes up in conversations, but I'd gladly play a Playstation 3 remake of the game, if and when such an endeavor is decided on.

Ah, right. Sorry Eric. I misunderstood you. In that case, I don't have much to say about Dirge of Cerberus. I own the game, but have yet to play it. Vincent Valentine is the main character, and the story is about a militia called Deepground SOLDIERs, that attack the city of Midgar one day, out of the blue. This game is Vincent's story. It dwells further into his dark past.

The gameplay is, as you've said, a shooting game. It was given the genre name "gun role playing game", as I imagine it has some role playing game elements. I see it a lot as a Metal Gear Solid game, in respect to confronting a select few Deepground SOLDIERs, that are the high ranks of the group, whom each have distinctive qualities.

ff7, alongside super mario RPG holds the honor of being one of the only RPG's i've ever beaten without cheating. i don't know why, i just never seem to get my head around them.

i only beat ff7 because the side quests were so fun. i originally played straight through, got to the final boss, got hilariously destroyed and decided i never wanted to see him ever again. so i just bummed around doing shit on the side, fighting WEAPONs (and again, losing hilariously), visiting the golden saucer (or whatever that place was called) doing the chocobo breeding sidequest, hunting down the knights of the round materia, etc etc, and in so doing, got to a fairly high level. high enough to win, finally. it was still close.

the music for the final boss fight (one-eyed angel) is really cool, one of the nerdier things i do is listen to it outside of the game :(

I never did beat those damn weapons. My party was already nearing a level range of the 70s-80s....I think. It's been such a long time since I've last picked up that game.

I don't find anything shameful in liking video game music. It's an under-appreciated genre, with potential, at times. Granted, there is a lot of bland sounding video game music out there, but when you actually do come across distinctive, excellent music, they stay with you for a long time.

I have no reason for reviving this thread. Just funny how I gave such a long post and Eric expected it, lol. That goes to show how badly I want that FF7 remake for PS3.
