I have lots of old vinyl, but I don't understand buying new vinyl. I've done it a few times for special reasons, but why would I want a new vinyl copy of album that was made for CD? (Serious question.)

I love going to an old record store and rumaging through a bunch of old ass vinyl.... I went last night and spent like 40 dollars for about 8 records, including some Jimmy Smith, Edgar Winter, Bobby McFarin, an unopened copy of Peter Tosh, and some crazy track by Art of Noize with MaxHeadroom samples.... I usually look for such random stuff, that you will never find on a CD or for download..... I love music, so I search for old outdated tracks that have all been forgotten....(y)

i have a ginormous beastie boys collection, (pretty much every release there has been) a very expensive tool collection, lots of james brown, ATCQ, de la, and other funk jazz etc. its an expensive addiction.

If you're a dj, you basically have no credibility unless you have some vinyl. CD's are kinda looked down upon. I don't dj btw, but some friends of mine do.

I've got about 30-40 records, about 25 of those inherited old records, and 10 of which i've bought including some bowie, some ac/dc, some icehouse, tiga's far from home and remixes, daft punk's prime time of your life and remixes and some other crap.

there was some guy dj'ing at the seacliff hotel last week with the name dj vinyl. but he was only using cds. what a fucking wanker. i mean, as if u call yourself dj vinyl when you only play cds. and shitty top 40 cds at that. we gave him soooo much grief that night when we were pissed. but he deserved it.

as for getting albums on vinyl, well, i just think they sound better.

i've got a few things here and there on vinyl. steger and i really just collect rare singles and such from our very favorite bands. i'm working on getting my mom to give me her old collection, though - it's pretty rad. i've found some awesome stuff in it.

i just don't understand the snobbery. it's so dumb. yes, vinyl is fun sometimes, but you can't exactly play it on a road trip, hm?

I think the only albums I bought on vinyl I got used. Everything bought new was typically a single...sometimes ones that were non existant in MP3 format...so in that regard its nice.

I had Tools second album on record somewhere, god knows what happened to it...but apparently its worth like $200 now. I think my parents threw it out during a move

i wouldnt think anything of a dj who used only cds or serato and i've thought that for a while.

i buy records. they are bigger and heavier than compact discs...often for a similar price, therefore i think i am getting a good deal.

if you are talking about aenima, its worth more than $200.

the most valuable record i have is the tool aenima test pressing master. only 4 copies in the world. and sure, u cant play records on a road trip, only at home when the time is right. thats what makes them that little bit special.

its an expensive addiction.

You ain't kidding, I usually buy off of Ebay because there are absolutely no stores that carry vinyl where I live and I get good deals most of the time but sometimes people want ridiculous amounts for something cheap like a 12" single.

mikizee

yeah vinyl stores in adelaide are damn damn expensive. and ebay would be great most of the time, you can get some records really cheap, but its the shipping thats the clincher. shipping from the US to australia is not cheap. still, it ends up being a little cheaper than buying from a store here.

Many of the collectible records on ebay are fakes. I won't pay much for vinyl.

Are you saying that a Radiohead album on vinyl sounds better than a Radiohead album on CD?

I know that there is an argument that vinyl sounds better. I even understand why that's technically possible. But the thing is that it's awfully difficult to keep vinyl records clean and in great shape. More importantly, it doesn't matter what kind of stereo you've got or what you're playing -- it's all coming out of a wire and a speaker. I'm never going to invest the thousands of dollars necessary to upgrade my wires or speakers so the best sound in the world is wasted on me.

I like my old vinyl because it's old and familiar. I like pops and fuzz when I'm listening to certain kinds of records. I like the old album art. I also like that I'm more likely to listen to a whole album side at a time because I have to get off my ass and change the record.

im not saying that ok computer would necessarily sound better on vinyl, its just that its a classic album, rated as one of the best this century in more than 1 magazine, so i guess its one id like to have on wax.

as for fake records on ebay there are a shitload of them, u just gotta go your research.

oh i definitely can understand some of the draw of vinyl. it's definitely nice, and is much more appealing aesthetically than a compact disc. it has a feeling of substance for sure. but when people get to be snobs about it, that sucks. but you could say that about anything, of course.

i like going ot the store and just browsing through the racks for hours. but since i really don't have a whole lot of money to spend everything i have is either from my parents or found really really cheap at the store.

also, the fact that i don't have a record player in my apartment kind of slows me down

Okay, how did you know that I bought The Woods on vinyl? :o

I don't generally put a lot of thought into whether I'd like something on vinyl or on CD. I still buy both. I've actually got quite a few different albums on 3 different formats. But I grew up buying records. I have about 9 or 10 crates full. These days, I guess I only really buy old records that aren't available on CD or rarities. I don't normally buy new releases on vinyl unless it's a 45 or a 12" single, but I do occasionally. Plus some stuff isn't available in any other format but vinyl. Sometimes I just buy it for the artwork. The gatefold Paul's Boutique is a good example. I think I've only ever played it once.

But yeah, I don't really agree with the whole notion of vinyl sounding "better" than CD. I guess it depends. It does have a warmer, less bright and (obviously) less digitized sound, which, I guess, works for certain types of music. But I'd rather hear something like, say, The Chronic on CD, the way it was meant to be heard.

Nothing beats free records, though.

I still buy vinyl, maybe it's just an old habit....
I've got a couple of thousand, but I buy much less records these days. These days I only get vinyl from artists I really really like and I know (hope) their value would increase in the future. I think the last one I got was the Hellacopters picture disc (http://www.hellacopters.com/site/disco.asp?action=imintheband12#) and the most valuable I have is Bowie's Man who sold the world, Mercury German version (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/c/ca/MWSTWG1.jpg).
