Too light, I read he took the guys helmet off and proceeded to stomp
This should be considered assault with a potentially deadly weapon (cleats)

Fuggen hell that is harsh (not the punishment! The assault!).
Over here we had a "football" (soccer) player called Duncan Fergusson who got 6 months in Barlinnie Jail in Glasgow ofor butting someone.
That was just all out nastyness though! 5 games?! Should be looking at 5 months...

it kinda looks like he went for him twice. missed him the first time and then went back for another go. the guy is on the ground, without a helmet and the play is over. thats pretty bad. five games is ridiculous. in rugby, players get banned for longer than that for making a bad tackle.

Dunno I played rugby for a long while when I was younger and fit enough to do it and you are actively encouraged to stamp the ball out in a "ruck" on the ground (not heads though thats frowned upon but not outwith the rules.....) to bring it back into play.
..thats different though, like you say the "play" is done and I guess the whistle has blown, he just straight up assaults the dude while he's down there.
I mean, he shouldnt ever get toplay the game again after that. 5 game ban/no pay??
Like a slap on the wrist really!
Good video though!

well, that's part of the game...if stomping on someone's head while they were lying on the ground unprotected was part of American Football, then that'd be fine.

Just the difference between rugby and NFL I guess, thats why I still hear old "rugger" types calling American Football "a lot of sissy's wearing pads and helmets" but the game - and especially the tackling - wouldnt look or be as enjoyable without it. Thats why they can tackle each other so hard it's not like they'll lose a kidney or break ribs with all the body armour and padding in "normal" circumstances.
2 different games I'd say but American Football would look great to me played "open" with mauls and rucks instead of the ball going "dead" all the time and the teams lining up for another play.
In that video it's just a cheap assault really. One thing "raking" with studs to free up a ball in that sort of game, another thing doing it for a cheap shot. Looks like the guy was badly injured too, was it in the face???

When American Football first "broke" in the UK (Channel 4 started showing it live - this was about 1988 or something...) we tried to invent an "open" play version of it...
Carnage was the word even as a 16 year old with no pads except "soccer" shinguards...
Rugby is still more tactical and strategic - as crazy as it looks played - and it's still more a "team game" even though I appreciate the intricacies of NFL play a lot....
There's more "breathers" in NFL, I never realised the games ran so long till I checked one out "live" when i vistied my Aunt in Florida. Then ask a rugby player to run around with 250lbs of body armour on and they'd last about 15minutes I suppose..
Still, good though shame it's on at a time that means I can function at work the next day if I choose to stay up and watch it!
