i've actually been doing so over the course of a few months, once every couple weeks. why do boys just like automatically know how to drive a stick? it's so frustrating! i'm doing pretty decently now, except for on hills. i only stalled once today:cool:

i learned how to drive a stick at 2am when i was 15. i was spending the night at a friend's house, and 2 dudes we knew showed up, so we snuck out. i was wearing my pajamas (long t-shirt and underwear) so i'd have been screwed if we got pulled over. but i did really well and the next time i tried it, it seemed fairly natural to me.

driving a manual/stick is way more fun, but nowadays I just don't care. next car I get will probably be an auto.

i feel left out. i never even touched a steering wheel till i went to driver's ed. and i had never even been within 10 feet of a manual transmission before i met joe. i'm a late bloomer:(

Nah, that's crap. I taught Wayne how to drive stick...but not before he bought an automatic Subaru WRX...which he took to Jiffy Lube to get oil changes. I told him "Dude, you can NOT take an automatic WRX to my friend Tommy's shop, he'll never stop making fun of you," and he got super insulted. I'm like, well, you don't buy a freakin' racing car in automatic! And he was also so proud whenever he 'schooled people' on the road. I'm like "Yeah, it takes a loooottt of talent to step down on that one pedal huh." Jeez.

My dad taught me how to drive stick on his '64 Dodge Dart - no power brakes or power steering either. That thing was haarrddd. But not as hard as driving his '67 Plymouth Barracuda - he customized it and had the seat moved back so it could accomodate his long legs and I couldn't push in the clutch all the way.

Yeah, I did that too.

Fuck, *I* change my own oil. I told him I'd show him how to change his, and he said he'd rather just get his serviced. SO FUCKING YUPPY! (n)

Dude mang, changing your tire is so easy. Just gotta learn where to place the jack on your car to jack it up (usually shows it in the car manual), jack it up, take off the hubcap, take off the 5 bolts, take off tire, replace it, put bolts back on, put hubcap back on, unjack car.

Easy as pie. Unless you're in an awkward situation like mud or heavy traffic, then it's a tow truck for me.

my first car was a stick and when I bought it I had driven one maybe three times. My dad was like "well, gotta drive it home!" so I killed it at every intersection and drove home in third gear on the highway.

My mom asked "hows the new car?" and I replied "I fucking hate it!"

I bought my first automatic 2 years ago and my second this year. One a commuter car and one's a family car -- no more sports cars for a while. But I'm definitely getting the mid-life crisis popo in a manual.

In this country, if you pass your test in a manual, you're allowed to drive an automatic, but not the other way around.

my dad made me learn how to drive on a stick shift so that I would be able to drive anything (big trucks, whatever) if the case arose. All my cars have been stick since...and let me tell you...it sucks in traffic and the resale value is not to good since like no one drives stick anymore. AND....not so good for road head.

I cant stand automatics it's like driving a fucking dodgem and they are really bland to drive.

Saying that Hertz in Florida were most "helpful" when i was last over there...

There must have been about 6,000 cars in the lot.

"Can I have one with gears?"

"Gears?"

"Yeah, you know, 3 peddles, not 2? 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 gears and a reverse??"

"You mean a shift?"

"Yeah - 'a shift".

"Son, i aint seen a shift for 5 years..."

That reminds me about big truck boxes, like splitter boxes and such. Something with 14 gears takes a little more getting used to.

I've never lived there, but I just assumed manual transmission would be the preferred nomenclature in the city of ups and downs.

My manual transmission upbringing:

I learned how to drive in a early 60's Chevy truck: three on the tree, hauling cords of wood and such in our rural area. No big deal for a 14 year old kid to be doing that on your own land, but sometimes I'd drive it to the local gas station or grocery as well, which was fun.

The first car I drove legally as "my own" was a Rabbit, which was a four-speed, if I remember right. I just always liked manual transmission better -- it feels like you're more in control.

84 champ with a 4 speed and a 2nd shifter for power/economy you could shift it 8 times
I haven't owned or sat in a car that isn't a auto for over 10 years at least

Same here.

what a hump.

my buddy bought an 02 WRX and although smart enough to buy a 5 speed manual, he couldn't drive it worth a shit. the harder he tried the worse he got. you know that asbestos smell when you're giving it gas before the clutch is fully disengaged? ....yeah that smell. it was awful. he let me drive it to get hamburger buns before the $15k worth of mods. i smizoked a 5.0 mustang off the line. AWD burnouts what?! that car practically pounced off the line.

i'm a princess, so i don't change my own oil.

you don't really even pump your own gas anymore either.

hey dipshit, make sure you remove the lug nuts in a star pattern for a 5 bolt and opposite one another for a 4 bolt. never take em off / put em on in a clock/counter clock wise fashion, you could damage the rim. also ace, it's a good idea to loosen all the bolts before you jack the car up. that way you just have to spin the tire with the lug wrench on the bolts. snug up the bolts with the tire partly on the ground to prevent it from spinning whilst tightening.

thats how i sortof learned too. i bought a grand am but i didn't realize it was a manual until i went to pick it up. dude says, just drive it, you'll figure it out. i sort of did, but then i thought i was a race car driver (see friend mentioned above) a burned it out. while that clutch was getting replaced i decided to learn on UPS package trucks instead. by the time my car was repaired i could drive 5 tonne truck around like ford festivas.

personally, i prefer a maunual transmission no matter what the driving environment is. an automatic honda civic has about as much HP as a hoover vaccuum, whereas a manual can be driven a lot more effectively, because you decide when to switch gears.

(my old civic could scream up to 75 km/h in 2nd gear before it heaved and wheezed)

it angers me that you can buy a porsche carrera, N350Z, IG35 etc with a fucking automatic transmission.

TIP TRONIC AND SEQUENTIAL SHIFTING ARE NO REPLACEMENT FOR A REAL MANUAL GEAR BOX. its better than a kick in the junk, but just barely.

yeah, so i drive a mtn bike to and fro work, but i do love cars.

It sucks not knowing how to drive stick shift ...An automatic is boring to drive and because an AT shifts early you can never drive real fast...

Yeah, I remember my dad telling me to loosen the bolts before taking the tire off. And the manufacturer put the bolts on SO tight that I had to put the lug wrench over one of the bolts and put my full weight onto the handle (actually STANDING on the wrench) in order to loosen them. The hell, man? Same with my oil filter. I had to get a freakin' 4x4 to hit the wrech for that, too. I guess they're protecting against any kind of lawsuits, but GODDAMN.

I'm so glad my dad was a mechanic as a hobby. On the weekends, he'd show me how to do all the basic maintanence to my car (how to jump start, oil changes, tire changes), plus extra stuff. I know how to do a radiation flush, change my headlights/taillights, clean my battery, check and top off all my fluids, check all of my belts, change my windshield wipers, etc. I'd be paying out the ass if I didn't have him teach me this stuff! And the stuff I don't know how to do and have to take in to the shop, well, at least I know whether or not they're trying to hussle me. I love my dad, yo.

*winge*

I once changed a tyre in heavy snow, and everytime I tried to lift up the spare onto the car, it kept slipping through my bare, frozen hands. I had to sit on my arse and support it with my knees. Good job the jack didn't give way.

Corollas rule hard. my mum gave me and my brother her old 1980 Corolla Deluxe (http://images.trademe.co.nz/photoserver/79/27801979_full.jpg) when she bought a Golf and that thing was awesome. holy shit, it was sweet. engine wouldn't quit and it was rear wheel drive so that was even more fun.

kinda looked like the one in the link, but cream and not so done up. we eventually sold it for way more than it was worth( it had structural rust) to some car enthusiast teenager who was gonna sink loads of money into it. he was super happy to get one in such good condition cause apparently amongst the car kids here, that shape has become somewhat of a classic.

manual is the rule here; automatic the exception and i like it like that.

The problem with gears though is that the newest cars have 6 or even 7 gears, so you are shifting a lot

i dunno how classic it is really, it might be a bit rarer as a station wagon. But teenage kids will sink stupid amounts of money into things they have no idea about too, i know i did.

I've never lived there, but I just assumed manual transmission would be the preferred nomenclature in the city of ups and downs.Well, for the natives, yeah. But the transplants have no idea how to balance clutch and gas pedal or when the emergency brake is actually needed.

I rarely do much driving in SF, anyway. Believe me, if the Avalon came in a manual, I'd own one. I almost bought the 5 series just for the transmission, but the extra $ and lower MPG were prohibitive.

it angers me that you can buy a porsche carrera, N350Z, IG35 etc with a fucking automatic transmission.
I find it kind of funny to see people driving automatic Porsche's and the like. These are probably the same people who stuffed their pants (or bra in Skye's case ;) )in high school.

TIP TRONIC AND SEQUENTIAL SHIFTING ARE NO REPLACEMENT FOR A REAL MANUAL GEAR BOX. its better than a kick in the junk, but just barely.
Ain't that the truth. The Avalon has Tip Tronic -- or whatever they call it -- but I've only used it once. Same effect as rapidly depressing the gas pedal, really.
