I've clarified the deadline and the start/end of voting times a little better on the contest page.

Also added a 64kbps version of the audio track that's half the size of the original 128kbps version in case anybody is having trouble downloading such a large file. Both files are the same execpt the sample rate at which they were ripped from the movie file. You can use either one.

Will be putting the first entries up in a few days.

Let's keep this contest clean, no screwing around, and if everything goes well we can have another one down the road. Honor Among DJ's, that sortof thing. :) If for some reason I feel like someone is trying to screw the contest, there will not be another. Because quite frankly these things are stressful enough for me without the added headache of worrying that someone is trying to cheat.

Judging will be by a Jury of Your Peers.
If you submit a remix, you get to vote, as simple as that. You do not however get to vote on your own mix. You will get to vote on each mix that is not your own using a 10 point scale. If you love the mix, it gets 10 points, if you don't like it, it gets 1 point etc etc..

I've come to the conclusion that you guys can pretty much mix anything I throw at you! Ok actually I knew that after the last contest :eek: :p

There's some good stuff coming out of this one too, even though there seems to be a lot to work with, (audio for a whole freakin' movie) I'm sure it's slim pickins' when you're looking for something to drop into a mix.

Fun for who? Yes they are fun, but they're a load on top of my usual pile of stuff I need to get done during the day.. I am an army of one over here.

A contest a month is a bit much for me, but if they keep going smoothly and there's no BS, and people continue to participate, I'll keep doing them when I get a wild hair and want to test you guys. :)

I almost feel bad for last contest and made up for it with the current one, which is probably just as hard. I'm gonna find something one of these days that nobody will even attempt.

Slightly OT, but this got me to thinking about a project I did a long time ago. Basically I had a bunch of artists from mp3.com upload their songs, and then I'd stuff them into a playlist of sorts. Then when folks visited the site I had built, they got to listen to the "radio"(shoutcast). Each time a new song came on, while it was playing the visitor could vote, simply "hot" or "not". Then I kept a chart of who had the highest average.

What was even cooler was that you (as a visitor) had to listen to what was being played. The original artist (or friends of) couldn't just show up and vote for their track without hearing at least a few other tracks. To emphasize that... their friends couldn't help but vote "hot" for a few tracks they heard while waiting for the "gimme" vote. The playlist was of course randomized every day so they didn't know what time their track was going to be on.

I guess it's not really a contest, but as a remixer it'd be cool to say your track was in the top-10 over at beastiemixes.com for the past two weeks or whatever.

Anyway, I thought it'd be cool if we did something like that. Just chuckin' it out there. Silence, I know we kinda talked about it a bit a week or so ago. I can build the radio/voting front-end and back-end if needed. I work full-time as I'm sure you do but I'm willing to work on it if there's any interest at all.

Ok. Back to what you all were doing. Sorry for going off topic.

I can't say a lot about it right now but I already have a database guy on the team and some of the stuff mentioned is semi in-place as we speak. along with some other surprises. ;)

I'm just busy enough where anything above maintaining the site is killin' me. Hence the temporary ban on new dj's. But i'm working on it. I Swear.

I agree...i haven't been mixing for that long either. In fact, i lost a lot of my first stuff because i upgraded my operating system, and i thought id never miss it because i thought the stuff just wasnt that good. But in the 6-7 months that i have been mixing, i've learned a TON (still not as good as Nygel or Taco Zip though, props guys). Now i wish i still had those first mixes to go back to and polish....gone forever. I guess my advice would be to not throw out anything!!!

Same thing happened to me....I reinstalled Windows XP and lost about the first 30 Acid Project files......So If I wanted to, I can't go back and fine tune them.........I should've backed them up....I backed up the actual mixes, but not the project files......

I've actually been doing stuff and not even saving it. Just making it for fun and to learn stuff. I've been saving most stuff now though.

^^^ That's what I assumed - that ALL samples, loops and sounds HAVE TO COME FROM THE SOUNDTRACK (except the drums)???

There may well be a few tracks where some of the sounds seem a bit iffy. I did one using 1 sound that I EQ'd and filtered and played up and down the keyboard but it sounded so far removed from the original that I guessed that people may think it wasn't from NOTLD - so I didn't use it.

Was this a question for me??? Since I didn't really define that you couldn't use other samples I don't know if it would be cheating or not (I really should think these things out a bit) Anybody who submited an entry is a judge, and therefore can judge the mixes the way they see fit.

If the judging were up to me, the more of the actual soundtrack that made it into the mix the better, Obviously hard to do when you have SOoooo much soundtrack to deal with, but the more the better.

Second I would be looking for creative uses of the soundtrack, a rhyme that is answered by a line of dialogue in the soundtrack, a little pass the mic action between the Beasties and the movie, if ya know what I'm sayin' among other tricks of the trade I'm sure you guys know all too well.

Third would probably be based on how much the song overall made me want to get up off my ass and jump around my appartment. (not a pretty sight, but it's fun :D )

Judge it how YOU see it this time. Maybe next time we'll all work together for some rock solid rules before I spring a contest on you guys out of nowhere.

BTW, you guys RULE!!!

All my entries are entirely made with the soundtrack.. even though you might not hear it... In one mix ive used a synth to give an extra boost to the chorus, but it uses the exact same chords the movie does...

I had the feeling that some stuff didnt come from the soundtrack too, but when i listened to it again if found these samples. Some are just a few secs long... Before you run into any conclusions you might want to check the soundtrack out again.

hey fellas. just don't let us get this too serious. i really don't like serious music and band contests at all!

before i made my mix (or 2 or 3 mixes) i checked the tracks that were already uploaded and i thought to hear some sounds which were to hi-fi to just be sampled from the original soundtrack. so maybe i also used 1 (or 2 or 3) sounds to boost some parts a bit. probable i made a track (or 2 or 3) just with bb rhymes a drum loop and samples of the soundtrack. i don't see any problem about that. sure the best sounding mixes with the "closest to the soundtrack" vibe will get the extra points.

and hey Joakizmo and chromium05 i'm pretty sure that your mixes will rock the contest!!!!!

well, i just went through all of the mixes up so far and I'm pretty impressed, I think only one or two have really showed up to me as exceptional, of course I have no room to talk, mine is similiar to most of the ones out there now, It keeps tone to the movie, although a few of the ones up do kinda go against the movie in ways of it sounds happy and shit, idk, sounds wierd to me hearing people talk about getting eatin and then i feel like dancing, oh well, mine will be up within the next few days so everyone can make fun of it when it comes out. just felt like expressing my views on this

I was thinking it would be cool if when we voted, we could add a comment or 2 stating why we voted like we did. "I didn't like the added synth. Drums were bangin though." etc.

I think there are not to many parts in the soundtrack that are really great to loop. and hearing that these were already used made it even harder. but on the other side: there's some great stuff that was uploaded pretty late and I was biting my ass to not have made these loops.

All you have to do is reply back to the e-mail with your vote next to the name.

1 thru 10 10 being best.

It's a few after 9pm my time so 3 hour remain. It might take me a few minutes after midnight to get the e-mail out, depends on if there's any late entries.

I will be monitoring my e-mail until then. At Midnight, I will ignore any late entries.

yea, taco has kinda fallen off the map, but uru is still hitting us up with awesome mixes, i have alot of respect for him cuz he helped me start remixing. as for new remixes i think phosphoros is the shit, i love the style he mixes things.... wasn't he on beastiemixes? i can't find his page now.

and my votes are in.... i made it tough... my highest was a 8, mainly becuase i was tired of hearing the same backing for the music constantly from some of ya.... lazy bastards ;) , but all good, i enjoyed this though, and i enjoyed the remixes.

Thanks for the plug Silence7. You're certainly welcome to post any and all of my Beastie mixes, I just figured that the bandwidth would be better used by remixers without hosts. Anyway, great work with this contest. I can't wait to see the final tallies. It sounds like there were some pretty tough judges out there. I was actually pretty generous with my votes, because I thought most of the mixes were really good. I think I only gave out a couple of low marks. Keep us up-to-date!

When I wrote it up I actually meant it to mean on the night of the 29th, Sunday night, which would give everybody the whole weekend to work on their votes. That was my actual intention, but I think people take it differently.

Leatherface and the Wicked Witch were my faves - The lowest mark I gave was 4. The standard was really high but it was hard to judge as there were some similar samples and styles in there. I think I will do very well to finish anything other than last!

It was difficult to judge cos there were similar samples and also I found myself groovin along to a few and then thinkin "hey there's not too much of the film in here and then markin them down" The suspense is killing me - i aint entered one of these before and I am fearing the worst as mine was pretty amateurish compared to the rest. Those marks you gave out were strange though but i would say it was an average of 6

It was difficult to judge cos there were similar samples and also I found myself groovin along to a few and then thinkin "hey there's not too much of the film in here and then markin them down" The suspense is killing me - i aint entered one of these before and I am fearing the worst as mine was pretty amateurish compared to the rest. Those marks you gave out were strange though but i would say it was an average of 6

Yeah man, I hear ya on that..........It was definitely tough to judge....So I came up with a simple system.....There more the mix sounded like the movie the more points you got....There were alot on there that sounded real good, but then I was thinking....where are the samples......So automatic 5 for limited sample usage, and hardly no sample usage....under 5....like the "Jigsaw" entry...which I gave a 1 by the way...sorry......And the ones that had the most samples I gave a 6 and up.....The more clever or better it sounded I gave more points above 6....Like Blackula, I thought it was unique, the vocal change was cool, and used alot of samples from the movie.....so I gave it and 8.........Overall, I think I was pretty tought on the judging...out of 29 entries, I only gave 16 of them a rating of "6 or higher"....Hope that wasn't giving out too much information.......Oh yeah, by the way, that's persons average is actually a 4.5, above us........

haha, i'm pretty sure i didn't win so i think i can say this, i made that as a joke mix. If you've ever seen the infamous buffalo bill scene where he dances, thats the background music. So i thought i would have a little fun by putting that in there to break up the monotony of the music. It gets a little boring hearing constant music about people getting eaten. (y)

yeah thanks. and thanks to silence7 and the guys who are hosting this forum.
the contest was big fun and very inspiring. lots of impressing mixes. the letherface mix was my first. I recorded the e-bass and used a korg ms-2000 synth and programed the beat. after the discussion about using other instruments I made the pinhead remix just using a drum loop, some drum sounds and loops of the soundtrack and the bbs. after hearing the "Felix Deluxe doom mix"(awesome mix) I had to make the loki remix. the drum in this one is made out of the soundtrack too. the timbales were pretty cool and I used some door smashing and hammering with some distortion for the rest.

it was nice to see how fast the best seconds of a 1 1/2 hour soundtrack got discovered and looped in your mixes. just great. Chromium05 - Joakizmo - Ulisse - Felix Deluxe just to mention my favorites. all great work.......

I, "Frankenstein", would like to take this opportunity to mention what sample I used. It was the music box, in reverse and chopped up. Just to clear it up in case people thought it wasn't from the movie :)

This comp has helped me learn more about making music (as I'm still in the early stage). Now I can put my myspace (http://www.myspace.com/hippomothamus) link in my sig :) (and maybe add some of you folk) I had my remix up there so didn't want to put the link on here and have people know I did it.

Well, first of all a massive round of applause for silence 7 for sorting all of this out and doing a great job. This was lots of fun.
Congratulations to bassdriver really good mix- I gave you one of the two "9"'s I submitted. It was a really high standard, well done to everyone. I am well chuffed with my top ten finish. I got some wildly varied marks though but I think a few people experienced that and I think thats because it was a well thought out comp with a good and varied source to use. Lets do another one soon with sleigh bells!

I really don't do these contests' for me, I do them for you guys, I thought about contests' a little before I opened the site, and figured that if I ever had one it wasn't going to be a normal contest, I wanted something out of the ordinary, and I think I've shown that with the two we've had so far. Both with great success I might add.

If I would have just said, We're having a contest and the best remix wins, and let you guys pick the song and the pella, you wouldn't have been pushed at all to find those little golden samples in a giant landscape of sounds.

Christmas Contest, Hmmmm I dunno. My Girlfriend knows the torment I go through putting these things on, I know I make it look easy :rolleyes: but it's stress above and beyond just running the site, which is stress enough. I will admit that I already have something picked out for a Christmas contest, I won't rule it out completely, but I will have to think about it, for the reasons mentioned above, and the fact that I'm not much of a Christmas person, the whole commercialism of the holiday everywhere you look has kinda soured me on all things Christmas. If I do a Christmas contest, you can believe me when I say that I do have something completely tWiStEd in mind.
