Doesn't it mean Emergency Medical Tech or something like that? Like a Paramedic?

yes, but there's a difference...although emt's do 90% of what paramedics do, paramedics have more schooling and get paid more. My plan is to work as an emt while I go to school to become a medic.

And yes Turd I'd probably have to touch little old ladies. And I'd probably get socked in the face a few times by them like my sister does working as a CNA.

What made you think about choosing this line of work?

I'm not sure it's just been something I've wanted to do for a long time. I need a job that's different every day, something that keeps my interest.

It's a good job for sure, and the key to making work it is being aware of the trauma. Nothing quite prepares you for the first time you arrive on the scene of a huge accident, cannot help someone who dies right in front of you, especially a child.

All medical jobs are worthwhile, and if you are made of the stuff that can do it, that's a gift that should be utilised for the common good.

Yeah I hear the burn-out rate is 5 yrs. I hope I can handle it.

The burn out factor is greatly exacerbated by people not using the counselling services, etc, when they need to. Too many people think they are going to be heroes, then end up on Prozac. I have known people work in trauma, disaster management and all kinds of crap for decades and decades, warzones and everything, and be well adjusted folk to boot. It doesn't have to be something that burns you out.

No one starts out made of iron, we all get used to things, and the key for me is to see death and suffering as a very natural part of life, and therefore my day, to talk about the horrible stuff when I need to (and keep what is probably a horrific diary in other people's eyes), and to remember to take please and satisfaction in the rewards, blessings and victories, so it's not all just one nasty slog of blackness.

Good luck;)

Thanks:) Sounds like you have it down...like you said it's all about how you look at it and balance.

I've seen a movie about it. :)

But, seriously -- I bet that's gratifying work if you can deal with the unpleasant aspects. I think I'd get frustrated feeling out of control when I couldn't rescue effectively, in whatever way.
