Really, really good movie. Scorsese's first satisfying non-documentary movie in about a dozen years. Entertaining, too -- 2 1/2 hours fly by.

Damon's terrific. He's slippery as all when he plays an immoral scumbag; I dug it.

Mark Wahlberg's character is a gas, and he's on it.

This might be a great movie; I don't know.

8.5/10. (y)

...I loved it, at the very end, when the character walked in the apartment and saw what was about to go down, and said, "Okay..." It was a not-rresigned-but-I'm-sounding-like-it sort of "okay" of someone who thinks they've still got bargaining chips. So, so perfect. (y)

By the way --

Did anybody notice that the guy who played Henry Hill's brother ("Keep stirring the sauce!") has a small part in this one? I ned to double-check, but it sure looks like him -- standing erect, same voice, maybe 15-20 pounds heavier.

He's one of the thugs Leo's character meets up with early on, if I remember right.

I went through hell before getting to the theatre last night to show up and find that half the original partakers pulled out and the remaining ones waited until I was almost at the front of the line (which i waited in alone) to show up and then decided that they didnt want to watch a movie ever

I pretty much hate every person I know

except courtney who drank wine from a recycled cardboard vessel on the way over with me before taking off to go to a sunday night party which I still kinda hate her for but I guess I hate her less than the rest of them

The only thing that was off-putting was that they settled every single freaking disagreement by throwing punches...sometimes to a ludicrous extent...

"Dude....you fucked up...." ***swings a punch...buncha guys pull them off each other***

Repeat.

Other than that...a great flick. JAck was better than usual and the end was pitch-perfect.

Gotta agree that Wahlberg stole the movie, although Leo made a game effort with all of his "emoting."

I finally saw it last night. I loved that he did not hold back on the violence. A mob film has to be hardcore and the point blank shootings were definitely hardcore. The ending was good but I did not forget about the character. It did not surprise me but who cares it was a good solid film.

I thought the acting was great in it though, but the story itself, I feel like i've seen it a dozen times already.

ANd nothing Scorecese does will ever be better than Taxi Driver and GoodFellas in my eyes, so that hurt it as well. But even if I didn't know it was Scorcese, I wouldn't think it was anything special.

Was it irony that all Mary Mark did was yap about "TV/Movie Cops", when all I thought was that he was ascting like your typical TV/Movie Cop. or was that the point?

Just watched this... Wow. I went into it with no expectations cuz whenever I get hyped up about something I'm usually disappointed. And it blew me away. It's pure undiluted Scorsese, which is something he hasn't really done for about 10 years. He called it his "B Movie", and it's kinda ironic that when he stops trying consciously to win an Oscar and goes back to his brutal, violent best he finally gets Best Director. And well deserved it was, too.

He said himself it's his first movie with a plot and if you've seen Infernal Affairs then you'll recognise how the Scorsese touch really affects the way a story is told. The sense of mistrust and hopelessness is overwhelming in a way that I never felt it in Infernal Affairs. If you haven't already, and you like Scorsese, see this film now. Seems to me like his best since Goodfellas, which is my favourite film ever. Wonderful stuff. (y)

It's just a playful bit of punctuation. The director's kind of winking at the audience, (hopefully) giving the audience one last little bit of unabashed entertainment, like Pesci shooting at the camera at the end of Goodfellas, or the phallic train plunging into the tunnel at the end of North by Northwest. I thought it worked fine.

Bump: Because I finally saw it. What a huge disappointment. The acting was excellent (except for Jack who I don't ever need to see in another movie as long as he lives) but the story was dumb dumb dumb. I never dreamed it would be dumb. I can't believe you all loved it so much. I can't believe it got a pity oscar for best picture.

How did the two guys who are both living the exact opposite secret lives happen to be fucking the same woman?

When Jack Nicholson learns REALLY early on that he has an undercover cop working in his crew, how does he not immediately suspect the newest member of his crew who he knows to be a recent ex cop? WTF. If this wasn't a dumb movie, Jack would have shot Leo right then and there. Or at least had someone tail him. I also didn't believe that Leo could keep making phone calls to Martin Sheen while he's working with Jack's crew and have no one ever look two feet to his right or left and see him doing it.

And Scorcese needs to never use another Rolling Stones song again. He's overdone that to death. Enough already.

Also, it's time for Scorcese to make a movie with a decent female part again. Goodfellas is the last movie he did that I really liked and it's no accident that it had a good female part. It bothered me at first that it was so full of big actors in small parts but I got over that. I know that everyone wants to work with Scorcese, but I prefer movies that don't feature cameos from a Baldwin or a Sheen.

I really liked Leo and Matt though. They are both terrific actors.

i'm not a big scorsese nerd so i'm not going to draw detailed comparisons with his classics, but it's just satisfying to see a decent film amid all the crap we sit through.
i gave it a rose-tinted 9.:o

in answer to documad's plot flaw quibbles, i agree with a lot of them.
i thought that matt damon was more indiscreet with his phone calls and pocket texting than leo tho.
both were brilliant and it's satisfying to see leo develop into a proper grown up. *swoon* :D
it is a bit of a ridiculous coincidence that they're shagging the same woman, but they do work in the same office, effectively.
why do hollywood women have to be so paper thin? it looks silly. they look so weak.
mark wahlberg was ace (y)
jack nicholson was good, but that BIG acting he does is a bit tiresome.

not to pick on documad overly... but also, the reason jack welcomes leo into the mafia fold is because a member of his family already worked for him. i'm pretty sure the fact that he trained as a police officer is kept top secret--hence why they sent him to prison.

i loved this movie, and thought the story was great. jack trusted leo because of his uncle jackie, who he could always depend on and trusted. and besides from mr. french, leo was the only one in his crew that he trusted. he was skeptical a little at first, but leo's character was intelligent and became a very reliable foot soldier. jack could see this and realized that leo was just like his uncle jackie, or so he believed. leo wasn't making phone calls, but was sending text messages, big difference. i also tend to enjoy movies that have cameos from alec baldwin and martin sheen. but i am sick of hearing gimme shelter in scorscese flicks.
