View Full Version : VH1 Hip-Hop Honors (Spoiler Alert)...

The evening started off with all of the honorees being introduced, then taking a seat in their respective Hammerstein Ballroom opera box. As it turns out, the Beastie Boys were seated to left of Russell Simmons, and Mike D had the privilege (if you'd call it that) of sitting next to him. They were actually talking with each other quite a bit, and from the looks of their conversation, they probably weren’t talking about satin panties (sigh).
After Ice T did a little pre-taped intro with Mike B (Mike Bloomberg), Tracy Morgan was brought out to introduce the Beastie Boys. His marbled-mouthed intro relied more on his comic material than any heartfelt sentiment, as he delivered the worn out, “What’s a ‘Beastie Boy’ anyway?” His only decent line came when he was comparing the Beastie Boys to other hip-hop groups. He said something to the effect of, “All hip-hop groups are trying to free people from prison. They’re like, ‘Free James Brown!,’ and the Beasties are like ‘Free Tibet!’ I’m like, who’s this Tibet guy anyway?”
I looked at the Beastie Boys to catch their reaction, but they had already left their seats to get ready for their performance. The package VH1 ran on the Beasties looked pretty nice (shot in black-and-white), but didn’t reveal anything we didn’t already know (except for the fact that Rick Ruben really didn’t have a bubble machine).
As soon as the segment ended, Mix Master Mike’s turntable station was wheeled out on stage. After he did some nice scratching, Diddy, Q-Tip, and Fabolous (I’m pretty sure it was Fabolous) came out on stage in tracksuits and performed a medley of “Paul Revere” and “Hold it Now, Hit it.”
MMM then cut up a real nice intro, dropping in a whole bunch of old school beats, as the Beasties came out to the sounds of “So What’cha Want?” It sounded great, the energy was high, but then—Adrock’s microphone cut out. A stage-hand quickly brought out another microphone, and this one didn’t work either. An agitated Adrock threw his hands in the air, as he was finally given one that functioned properly.
MMM dropped in Fabolous’ “Breathe” instrumental and the Beasties ended the song after the second verse. Just as Adrock went into the classic, “Let me clear my throat, kick it over here…,” a stage hand stopped the performance. For a second I thought the Beastie Boys were getting the royal screw job (bad audio and not being able to do a second song). Just as I was forming conspiracy theories in my head, the producer of the show spoke over the PA system and said that the Beastie Boys were going to do the song over, claiming the technical difficulties weren’t fair to the band or the fans.
The Beastie Boys performed “So What’cha Want?” once more, and then went into the last third of “The New Style.” Diddy, Q-Tip, and Fabolous came out to give the Boys hugs as they all exited the stage together.
Twenty minuets later the Beastie Boys returned to their opera box with Cey Adams and MMM’s significant other in tow. Mike D once again took his seat next to Russell, and the two chatted frequently throughout the night.
Later on, during Russell’s honor segment, something was said about him giving away money to noble causes. MCA smiled and whispered something to Adrock. He could’ve just been asking what he’s doing for dinner tomorrow night, but I’d like to believe he said something like, “Yeah, and half of that money belongs to us.”
The Beastie Boys were good sports throughout the entire night. They stayed the whole time, courteously bobbed their heads for all of the performances, exchanged pleasantries with MC Lyte and Rakim (who also shared the same opera box with them) and even joined in when Simmons got a standing ovation.
As the night wound down, MMM was snapping away pictures with Simmons, DJ Yella (NWA), and Rakim. As for MCA, he brought his daughter into the legend-filled opera box, put his arm around her, and ended the evening by listening to the sounds of the Wu-Tang Clan, proving once again that you’re never too young to learn about the lessons of the 36 Chambers.
Extras:
Attire-wise, the Beasties dawned no track-suits or jump-suits, lab-coats or over-coats. They were straight-up jeans and sneakers. Mike wore his shark hoody (with a pair of checkered Vans), MCA rocked the puffy coat, and Adrock was stylin’ in his mesh Knicks ballcap.
The crowd wasn’t that great. Just to give you an example, Lil’ Kim got a bigger ovation than the Beastie Boys. Maybe it’s because the Beasties went on first, and they just weren’t warmed up yet? I’d like to think that, but as we all know, today’s hip-hop crowd doesn’t give the Beasties the true respect they deserve.
If you’re watching the VH1 Hip-Hop Honors merely for the Beastie Boys, all you’ll have to do is watch the first five minutes.
Other highlights:
KRS-One gives a heartfelt intro into Afrika Bambaataa’s honor segment (“I say I am hip-hop, but this man right here, he’s hip-hop culture.”).
The Roots once again prove that they are the official house band of hip-hop, doing honor performances for MC Lyte, Rakim, and Afrika Bambaataa.
I forget her name, but the lady presenting for Russell Simmons was nearly getting booed off stage, when she stopped, looked at the crowd, and said, “I know this is stupid, but this is the shit the writer’s wanted me to say. Oh, I can talk, but I’m going to be professional tonight, because you people ain’t giving me a nickel.” In a matter of seconds, the boos turned into a cascade of cheers. She went from villain to hero in two seconds flat. You go girl!

All hip-hop groups are trying to free people from prison. They?re like, ?Free James Brown!,? and the Beasties are like ?Free Tibet!? I?m like, who?s this Tibet guy anyway?? haha...i wish he would've focused more on the fact that they were such big influences on hip hop today, but at least he didn't go for the typical stuff you'd expect i guess...introducing the beastie boys, what an honor!
MMM then cut up a real nice intro, dropping in a whole bunch of old school beats, as the Beasties came out to the sounds of ?So What?cha Want?? It sounded great, the energy was high, but then?Adrock?s microphone cut out. A stage-hand quickly brought out another microphone, and this one didn?t work either. An agitated Adrock threw his hands in the air, as he was finally given one that functioned properly. i'm tellin' y'all it's sabotage...
The Beastie Boys performed ?So What?cha Want?? once more alright! they always pull through for us in the end. they're so cool for doing that, after the "technical difficulties" and all..., and then went into ?Posse In Effect.? Diddy, Q-Tip, and Fabolous came out to give the Boys hugs as they all exited the stage together. so they did posse in effect, and not the new style like what was said in the other thread? both good choices nonetheless
Later on, during Russell?s honor segment, something was said about him giving away money to noble causes. MCA smiled and whispered something to Adrock. He could?ve just been asking what he?s doing for dinner tomorrow night, but I?d like to believe he said something like, ?Yeah, and half of that money belongs to us.? yeah that makes much more sense :P
As for MCA, he brought his daughter into the legend-filled opera box, put his arm around her, and ended the evening by listening to the sounds of the Wu-Tang Clan, proving once again that you?re never too young to learn about the lessons of the 36 Chambers. awww! :)

Holy Shit!!! It was one hell of a show. I would have to say that other than the Beastie Boy tribute and performance that Africa B. was my other favorite part of the whole show. Pfunk and Bootsie Collins on the same stage. Who knew? I'm still awed by the week in a whole.

Very nice recap, Mr. Juice. I wish we could have met you up in there.
About 3/4 of the way throught the show, my BBMB crew and I made our way down from the Mezz. level and to the side stage floor area fairly close to velvet rope that led to the Beastie opera box.
When Horovitz saw us he smiled and gave us a tip of the hat. And during one of the equipment set-up breaks Yauch left the opera box and gave us a quick wave.
I will also add that the Mezz. level was filled with a lot well known folks. As soon as I walked in I saw Hurricane. There was also Doug E., Ed Lover, Sal from Fever, and a few more that I'm blanking on right now.
What an incredible night!

Let me clear my throat, they did "The New Style," not "Posse in Effect."
Let me clear my throat
Kick it over here baby pop
And let all the party people (Adrock's VH1 revision).. feel the beat..
Mmm..drop
Coolin' on the corner on a hot summer's day
Just me and my posse and MCA
A lot of beer a lot of girls and a lot of cursin'
Twenty-two automatic on my person
Got my hand in my pocket and my finger's on the trigger
My posse's gettin' big and my posse's gettin' bigger
Some voices got treble some voices got bass
We got the kind of voices that are in your face
Like the bun to the burger and like the burger to the bun
Like the cherry to the apple to the peach to the plum
I'm the king of the Ave. and I'm the king of the block
Well I'm MCA and I'm the King Adrock
Well I'm Mike D I got all the fly juice
On the checkin' at the party on the forty deuce
Walking down the block with the fresh fly threads
Beastie Boys fly the biggest heads

I also forgot to mention that JamesB, the guy who did the shoutout videos on the Pageant, and won the BBQ competition on the AIFST DVD...was there.
He was dressed in some sort of weird Viking-type outfit and filmed the Beasties from the floor with the thermo/heat effect (or whatever it's called).

Dude, you are so damn cool for postin all that. Thanks. (y)
They’re like, ‘Free James Brown!,’ and the Beasties are like ‘Free Tibet!’ I’m like, who’s this Tibet guy anyway?”
They said free james brown too, in Car Thief! That guy introducing them better cut that knock knock joke shit and bow down, same goes for the audience!
After he did some nice scratching, Diddy, Q-Tip, and Fabolous (I’m pretty sure it was Fabolous) came out on stage in tracksuits and performed a medley of “Paul Revere” and “Hold it Now, Hit it.”
I really can't wait to see this, that's gonna be really entertaing. Hold It Now Hit It and Paul Revere are two of my favorites on LTI, and it'll just be cool watchin the BBoys get honored like the kings they are. But most of all I can't wait to see the Beastie Boys perform! So Whatcha Want and The New Style are excellent choices, that's gonna kick ass! I've been anticipatin this show so much I actually had a dream 'bout them performin last night, I know creepy. And just for me to think that some of you actually saw such a legendary thing in action...makes me fuckin jealous. No but really, I'm happy for y'all! I'm glad you guys did 'cause then I wouldn't know shit! :D
It sounded great, the energy was high, but then—Adrock’s microphone cut out. A stage-hand quickly brought out another microphone, and this one didn’t work either. An agitated Adrock threw his hands in the air, as he was finally given one that functioned properly.
Ouch, I can feel his frusturation just by how you put it. That'd piss me off if I was doin perfectly fine and then was forced to start all over. And the audience lost enthusium? What a tough crowd. BUT I bet the true fans didn't mind hearing So Whatcha Want over again at all, I know I wouldn't.

What a night! The free drinks had me open so the later parts are a bit of a blur but I do remember getting chills when Rakim blessed the mic.
At one point, I was in the bathroom and the Lyricist Lounge cats were smoking cigarettes. One of them says, "Hope you don't mind if we smoke a cigarrette?" I says, "As long as you don't mind if I smoke a joint."
Needless to say, I ended up in their private booth (the one above Marley Marl and Wu Tang Clan) puffing on a number of jays during the Wu Tang tribute. Maybe I'll make it onto VH1 getting blazed?
What a night!

I missed the beginning of the show twice tonight. I went to VH1.com and watched the performances. Diddy seemed like he was mocking the Bboys, he was laughing the whole time and missing lyrics and he went into a raspy MCA immitation. I don't know what Fabolous normally sounds like, but I hope he's always nasally. Otherwise he overdid his interpritation of Adrock's voice.

Ok, so if the Boys got to choose who honored them, how the hell did they pick Diddy? Q-tip is their Boy obviously, and Fab has mad flow so those make sense. But Diddy is WACK! hes not a real artist, he doesn't know how to rock the crowd or anything. So did the Boys really choose him or was it somekinda mishap? I wouldn't be so pissed if he did a good job paying tribute, BUT HE DIDN'T!
Where was Ghostface? I heard they didn't let him in cause he didn't have a pass or something....
The Bam tribute was off the hook though!

10-19-2006, 01:41 AM
Diddy was a horrible, horrible choice. But then again, there aren't many artists that could do a good job as the Beastie Boys. He seemed like he was imitating them more than paying tribute, he was laughing and acting like an idiot the whole time. It was kind of funny how the tribute was so corny and then when the Beastie Boys themselves came out they blew it away from the get-go.
