apples to oranges. Large commercial airline hitting an extremely well known building vs a small plane hitting an apartment complex.

The crash occurred near the heliport on the East River, according to MSNBC cable. The building it hit, the Belaire Apartments, has 50 floors and is located in the Lenox Hill neighborhood of Upper Manhattan, according to the building’s Web site. Apartments occupy floors 22 through 50; a hospital is on the lower floors.

I seriously doubt it was a terrorist attack.

Yeah, I'm willing to bet it was an accident.

I don't see any fighter jets over DC yet. If it was a serious threat, we'd have our jets over the nation's capital, right?

...right?

I dont think it was an attack, but NORAD dispatched fighter jets just in case...

they are interviewing a NORAD senior official now

all they said was "several U.S. cities"

There was no word on casualties. NORAD (North American Aerospace Defense Command) said it had put fighter aircraft into the air over numerous U.S. cities, though they said they had no reason to believe the event in New York was anything more than an accident, sources told CNN's Barbara Starr. It did the same thing after the September 11 2001, terrorist attacks.

update: 1 fatality confirmed by FDNY

"several US cities" should *probably* include NYC, Chicago, and DC.

I, ah, still don't see anything. :-/

I wonder how my Metro ride is going to be.

I would bet that there is always a fighter jet flying or at least hot(ready to fly at any given time) over DC.

lots of airspace to cover... i wouldnt worry... th rest of NYC is going about their business, typically annoyed at the fact that they might have to catch a different bus on the way home

On several occasions, I've seen stealth fighters come out of nowhere and just cut through the sky right above my building. It's cool after the initial shock.

Yeah, it's been confirmed that Lidle was the pilot of the plane.

There have been 4 confirmed deaths so far.

Still no idea if it was a mechanical failure or exactly what happened.

"The debris that rained down on the street included burning parts of the plane, as well as the pitcher's passport, wallet and luggage. It is not clear whether Lidle or flight instructor Tyler Stanger was piloting the plane - but each had a set of controls." nypost (http://www.nypost.com/seven/10122006/news/regionalnews/bomber_pilot_crashes_plane_regionalnews_murray_wei ss________and_dan_mangan.htm)

im surprised it didnt all burn, i thought it went into the building, but a lot of the debris fell onto the sidewalk below

is anybody else concerned that a plane was even able to fly close enough to the city to crash into a building? shouldn't lasers from space shoot it down first?

Worst part is his wife and son were on a commercial flight back to CA when it happened. Thats why it took so long to confirm his death. According to reports on ESPN they were going to have family and or a priest meet them at the airport.

yeah it is. i dont like how the media is giving out all the rules (really lax ones) for small planes. anyone could fly a plane full of whatever, nose down into midtown manhattan. we need more lasers in space goddamnit

a newly minted VFR rated pilot decides to ignore the w/x brief, flies into IMC and crashes into an apt complex. there's no one to blame here except the PIC. i'm sure they'll be plenty of extended radius TFRs all over the city now.

you can fit a shit load more exposives in a mid sized SUV and drive it into your target a whole lot easier.

lets put a ban on all SUVs instead, k?

b i o n i c
10-12-2006, 11:41 AM
the ORT on the TFN indicated a GPF on the VIX of the KLM on the way to the CHS. Its a shame the HHU or so LKS when the QWE is so LOL.

isnt it easier to fly a plane 12 minute from an out of town, low security airport than it is to drive an SUV through somewhat guarded entrances to the city. No guards to see a sweaty, nervous, driver in a car with possibly suspicious concealed windows or risking a request to search the contents of a packed car?

Dr Deaf
10-12-2006, 11:47 AM
if its so easy, how come it has never been done yet?

...or is just a matter of time?
