One thing I want to say about seeing the boys at the Gimme Shelter benefit is that they seem rejuvenated. Mike D looked 10 years younger, Yauch and Adrock looked great too. In 2004 I thought we might be seeing the end of the Boys, but now I feel confident that they are going to go on for a long time. *Knock on Wood*

One thing I want to say (and tried to say before) is what in the hell are they doing?????
They have nothing to promote, but they're going to South America? I know they have big hearts and so I understand the benefit in NYC. And now we know that the skateboard thing is their version of a corporate gig (which most bands do now). But why are they playing in Vegas? It's not like they're trying out new material like Radiohead.
It's really great, but why are they doing it? And what's next?

after hearing the GvR thing was a corporate gig i was kinda disappointed & i got a little worried when I heard they were playing in Vegas (great for fans) but...i don't want them to turn into a Celion Dion band!:(

Well...historically speaking, they have always "toured twice" after each album.
LTI - LTI tour + Together Forever tour
PB - can't count this one
CYH - Toured twice
IC - Lolla plus the Quadrophonic tour
HN - In the Round tour plus the Rhyme and Reason tour which ended up being cancelled.
TT5B - Pre Pageant gigs + The Pageant + these random benefit/corporate/vegas/south america festivals.
Then you throw in some Tibetan Freedom Concerts and a splash of BS2000 and you have an unorthodox touring history. :D

You summed up exactly what I was thinking. WTF is goin on? I hope they play some more random dates, hopefully in Canada.
Whatever though, I'm happy. There were some dark periods between the anthologys (cd and dvd) and TT5Bs when there was NOTHING going on. The BBMB was dead too.

The South American gigs, I've always assumed, are to make up for the ones which were cancelled in Mexico or what not. A few free shows is a little random I admit, but there's no cause for complaint. Just enjoy it. It was doing stuff like the NYC benfit show in 2001/2 I think which kick started their new album work, and the boys being activie is a darn sight better than there being nothing between albums.

I don't really get that, because when I saw gigs - even the warm up one in say Paris on DVD, or the Wembley show I went to - they were, in my opinion, as on top of their game as they could be. TV show appearences around that time were also rather champion, notably the Letterman and VH1 Hip Hop Honors one. They're looking great now too from what I've seen, but my faith isn't being restored...they've been spot on live for a very, very long time.

I guess what I am trying to say is that they looked great at the benefit show, even better than the last time that I saw them.

I wasn't complaining, I was just curious about whether there is a game plan. It appears that there isn't if they're being truthful about not being far along with the new songs.
I think the comments about the band looking more energetic is a result of Mike's new hair style. It's flattering and the close-cropped one wasn't. In fact, they all have better looking hair today than when they started the pageant tour. It's all about the hair. :)

About these venues: I have to think that it's got something to do with connections. I watched them at Gimme Shelter and they seemed to so very much enjoy the crowd--interacting with people directly and with the crowd as a whole. It could well be about remembering what it's like to do an intimate setting like that, seeing individual people and having them see you close enough to affect and be affected, you know? Maybe that's why they're going after a few smaller venues.
About hair on the pageant tour: I've thought that that's got to be about comfort & ease of maintenance. Doing sweaty shows a few times a week, I think I'd want to eliminate or minimize doing anything that required extra time or that made me uncomfortable. When I'm exercising, my hair is always tied up in a clip but I think that they'd not want to clip their hair up :) I keep it long because it's easier like that. For them, I think keeping it buzzed is the equivalent--it's easy and it's one less thing to think about?

Yeah, I see what you mean. It doesn't really add up to much with regards to what's happening in the long term. There's never any sort of schedule with them though for albums is there! But I think if they are working on some new stuff, which they I think they definitely are to some extent, a few random shows here and there is gonna be a benefit. Keeps them lively at least, as poosed to album-making hibernation!
And absolutely with you on the hair (y)
