Tommorow morning I'm going to give my boss an ultimatum. I'm going to tell him to decide exactly how much I am worth to the company, and that I'm considering moving on. I've been there for 10 years and he doesn't pay me much more than when I first started. I'm going to buy property soon and there is just no way I can do it on my current wage. So yeah. I'm just making this thread as like an affirmation, just so I don't chicken out. I really hate asking for more money but at the same time I know I am worth more than what I currently get. I do waste a lot of my pay on shit as it is, and that's gonna have to change too, but that's a whole different kettle of fish. I don't expect 14 pages of replies, but if someone could just go ahead bump it back to page 1 in the next 12 hours that would be greeeeeeat thaanks /lumberg

Its why working for the Government - while soul destroying in many ways - is good - you get a yearly raise.

i'm getting pissed as we speak

pre-emptive

actually i just havn't got any weed, so i've been getting pissed every night for the last week or so. At first it was because i couldn't get any, now I'm gonna try and give up again. but whenever i give up i get dis-satisfied with my life and start wanting raises and properties and shit.

another reason I want to buy is because our lease is due for renewal soon, and my housemate has told me he wants to get it on a 60-day lease because he'll be looking at buying next year. Which basically means that whenever he feels like it, he can leave me in the lurch looking for a place. So I'm gonna turn the tables on him and leave him in the lurch looking for a new place on short notice.

I bought my own place 3 years back - outright. It was worth all the scrimping and saving to do it.

Renting is just making other people rich. Write on a bit of paper how much youve spent on rent...

..

Then tell me you'll ever do it again???

Just keep thinking "10 years, 10 years, 10 years"...

That's a long time and since you're still there they probably kind of sort of need you. Why don't you deserve it, you know?

tracky

yeah the place would literally fall apart without me, i know this. besides that i make him thousands of dollars in a matter of minutes, sometimes in the 10's of thousands. Not every minute, but you know what I mean. I want to squeeze him for as much as possible, which is why I'm not going to tell him how much I want, but rather have him tell me how much he's willing to pay me to keep me there.

You said... you will let him decide what you are worth....I would suggest that you find out the exact amount that you have made for the company. Also, come up with a wage that you would be comfortable with and request a couple grand more. This will assure that IF he decides to give you a payraise it will fall more in line with your bottom line. I can speak from experience that it is better to have documentation of your profits or successes with the company and a monetary figure that you wish to make. Good luck.

it's one of those things that i should probably be celebrating but i'm not going to until the contract is signed

i'm happy enough and already he's changed his attitude which is good. like before he would never bother me with customers but today he started getting me to serve some, which is fine because it's something i'm also good at. basically he wants to make me 2IC when the other lady (his cousin in law, been there longer than me) leaves next year

Tommorow morning I'm going to give my boss an ultimatum.

that's a good way to get yourself fired. If someone gave me an ultimatum, I might fire them.

Go tracky go!!
I'm really glad about the outcome for you I was worried in this age of neoliberalism you'd get the ass for some desperate soul prepared to work for half your money just to survive.
Turned out your boss isn't such a capitalist c**t after all.
Stand your ground, get what you're worth. I'm sure you know what you should be getting paid someone with your experience and training - keep that in mind when he's throwing these offers at you.
Goodluck.

In my experience people don’t usually respond well to ultimatums. You may want to go with a different approach. If you go in there pissed and confrontational he will automatically become defensive and be less inclined to give you what you want. Instead, you may want to go in there with a positive attitude, make your points and tell him what YOU think you are worth. That way the decision to agree or disagree with you becomes his and he feels empowered still. If your points are valid he’ll probably give you want you want yet still feel like it was his idea. Ya dig?

I didn't really give him an ultimatum, he and I both know that's not nescessary or even going to happen. I told him that I think the place has far more potential for improvement but the motivation wasn't there. Or there abouts. To be honest he didn't really give a shit about my pay, he was like yeah cool whatever i'll pay you, but was more concerned with my depression and lack of satisfaction in life, and the fact that I have no release. Which is true. He knows me well. He kinda hinted at taking me to Vegas for a tradeshow/holiday which I probably wouldn't mind. Last week he invited me up to his shack for water-skiing and stuff, and he told me yesterday that the reason he asked me is because I need to relax. I might go.
