The Brazilian magazine 'Trip' interviewed the boys on their Oscilloscope Laboratories separately cause they know what happens when the 3 are interviewed together.....lol

If you know Portuguese you can read the interview (http://revistatrip.uol.com.br/149/negras/home.htm). If you don't you can at least see the photos (http://revistatrip.uol.com.br/149/negras/galeria.htm).

i think that in portuguese the caption says something to the effect of...
"spy or <blank page?>: this is the tentative setlist for the next beastie boys record

http://revistatrip.uol.com.br/149/negras/pop/f6.jpg

surely its a joke

Here is the first section that I translated from the revistatrip website, It might sound a bit odd but much better than an online translator I hope!

Titled: Beastie is you!

Front Page Caption:
As young brats, they left school and wanted to distance themselves from work. Now at 40 their ongoing unemployed status, has them on foot and wearing old clothes, The Beastie Boys have created a wave as one of the biggest bands in the world. Trip went to the studio of the icons and had conversation with each one of the whities who revolutionized hip hop to speak of what has been an unbeastie (harsh) life over the last 20 years.

Next Page:
The directory attached to the buzzer on the six story building in Tribeca NY lists off several law offices, insurance firms and architects. Two buttons say Oscilloscope Laboratories, both indicate the fifth floor. Its the name of the office of where one of the biggest bands in the world work daily- The Beastie Boys. Its three minutes to 10 in the morning and nobody has responded to the buzzer. Three minutes later a man arrives on foot, iced tea in hand sportin' a baseball cap and baggy pants as usual. The face of a regular guy but a man more known for his distinct strident voice- in singing the mega-hit "Sabotage" its 39 year old Adam Horivitz also known as Adrock for over 2 decades.

Drinking his iced tea and chatting about how he really enjoyed Sao Paulo on his first and only time in Brazil, he invites us in to Oscilloscope. There's a coffee maker, mugs, knick knacks, a plastic basketball net and stacks of paper, after all it is a studio. A room of technical enormousness, sofas, recording devices, analogs, digitals, shelves of CD's and LP's with every type music on them. A 20" Apple monitor. The recording room is a bit small for the daddys of the industry yet equipped with a fine set of various instruments, microphones, amplifiers and speakers stacked on top of each other..

At Oscilloscope is where the Beastie Boys reign, where they spend most of their time in the world, rhyming, improvising, composing, recording and finalizing their albums. they have always worked this way beginning way back, 20 years ago, Launching their first album, turning out to be the first rap group to make over 1 million dollars in album sales. Ladies and gentlemen, with great exclusivity for "Trips" first time, are the interviews with the Beastie Boys conducted separately... The greatest, Adam Yauch, Michael Diamond & Adam Horovitz.

Adrock sitting at a table lighting up a cigarette and asking, "So, what do u want to know?" (continued...)

Second Page, top caption to right of Adrocks pic: "I like being famous and the things that come with it, the money that comes with it, those who find that money is not important has a lot of it"
Italicized caption: 17th of August 10:05 in the morning, appears so ordinary in the way he looks and dresses but is the loudest screamer (in shows) of beastie boys.

Tirador de onda nato, <----- (for some strange reason i can't decipher that term must be some kind of portuguese slang), addicted to caffeine, and the bands guitarist is the only one of the three who had previously launched 2 solo albums.

Trip: What are your most distant memories?
Adrock: I grew up not too far from here about ten blocks away, Everyday I'm always reminded of fond childhood memories, I was always having fun.

Trip: Were you a good student?:
Adrock: Oh yeah, i was getting prepared to go to Harvard or Yale (Sarcastic Laugh) uh No, I wasn't much of a good student i had other plans, I already knew what I was going to do, like today.

Trip: With music?
Adrock: No, I basically just knew that I wanted to call out to a massive audience as best as i possibly could. It could have happened in some other way but i knew music early in life. I was 14 and I was doing shows.

Trip: Where did that desire to call out to a massive audience come from?
Adrock: Could've come from many things, my dad is a theatre writer, I'm one of three kids, I had the "youngest kid" syndrome, I wanted attention. I was always the brat of the crowd, I hung out with my brothers friends, I always did something to be accepted by the older crowd.

Trip: And when did your interest for music begin?
Adrock: My brother introduced me to everything in the beginning, we'd spend our pennies on compacts (sml vinyl records) I'd be about eight and i'd buy jackson 5 or whatever was popular at the time. I distinctly remember when my dad gave me Out of our Heads by the Rolling Stones as a gift. My Dad never listened to the stones and one day he wanted me to listen to them. the first LP i bought with my own money was Rocky Horror picture Show.

Trip: And then you quit school?
Adrock; Not that I quit school, i no longer wanted to go and they no longer wanted me there. It was a mutual decision. Over the years, I ended up in a way where I felt i was done, and I took the time that I felt was necessary (laughs)

Trip: Was your family upset when you decided to stop going to school?
Adrock: Not really, I had a very liberated childhood, my mother owned a child care centre, I'd often go to punk shows at a place called Mud Club, This one particular time i went there with my friends but they wouldn't let us in because we were under age, suddenly i see my mother in the line, "Mom what are you doing here?" "Oh I saw a promo flyer of this show in your room and felt like coming to see it!" She went in and we ended up staying outside.

Trip: How did you meet the other Beastie boys?
Adrock: We frequented the same record store, Ratcage and I saw them at the same punk shows I went to. My friend Jill Cunniff of Luscious Jackson knew them. At the time I had my band The young and Useless, they had theirs the Beastie Boys and then eventually I began hanging out and playing music with them.

Trip: When was the first time you heard hip hop?
Adrock; Around the same time. My brother and i used to listen to Rappers Delight by Sugarhill Gang and we were like "what is that?" After that we focused on the Jimmy Spicer Super Rhyme record. And we began listening to a lot of Grandmaster Flash and a lot of other stuff of that generation.

Trip: What was that feeling you had discovering Rap?
Adrock: It was sensational, difficult to write, but it possesed something more in the way that it was spoken. As if you can relate to it, When you hear the voice of Iggy Pop you know you don't run into those types of people just anywhere. A bad example would be any school freak could be like Iggy. But rap came across as or gave the impression that you would potentially want to get to know that person.

I think it's a reel-to-reel player. So that's like old, old, old collections of leftover shit if I'm right. It's probably a coincidence, but it was posted previously about them using all of their collected mastery of past techniques on new shit. Just a hunch.

Alright it took me a couple of days to finish but here's the rest of the revistatrip interview, again it might sound a bit strange cuz its been a while since i've read and written portuguese. I had to brush up on it, i'm a bit rusty.

Third Page: top caption to the right of Mike D's pic:
No one agrees more, but us three acknowledge that we are one of the best bands in the world. One must have a very big ego in order to step up to the stage.
Italicized Caption: 18th of August at 10:35 in the morning (he arrived late) Personally Michael Diamond was the most distant of the trio, being disagreeable. A fan of old T-shirts the drummer of the beastie boys, known as the thinnest and semi-weak and growling voice lightens up when he speaks of his two kids sitting at one of the tables in the cafe, he begins the conversation.

Mike D: Pardon me, I know it doesn't matter but I have a question,

Trip: Sure What's up?
Mike D: Why didn't you guys want to interview all three of us at once? Are you afraid of the band?

Trip: It wasn't fear, its just that i've seen videos of interviews of you guys and you three always offset the wave or the tone of interviewer its exciting but distracting.
Mike D: But what you guys don't like that?

Trip: We love it but when you're seen all together as a band the individuality of Adam, Mike and Adam fades.
Mike D: Yes that is true, the good thing is that when we're together, you can see the dynamics in our banter. Really when we fight we function better (laughs)

Trip: Well it was good to touch on the issue, we were curious why do you guys always confuse the press?
Mike D: Wait a second there, dude the press is the one that confuses us. We're just making sure no one gets in our way.

Trip: What do you think of the Press?
Mike D: Its interesting what had previously happened about the threats in London. Everyone was saying that "we arrived at the airport three hours early" as we always have, just like you guys would have, It wasn't that big of a deal , no different from any other time. The media made it out to be as though this is what happens for those of you who wait. that is why there is a big difference between what's in the media and in reality, especially now more than ever.

Trip: Was it the Music press?
Mike D: I don't know, sometimes they don't like us, and other times we don't like them, we don't answer their questions too seriously but they want a serious answer and at the same time they want to hear the same things we've already told them, for me thats strange, you've already read about that so the answers are more or less the same, some actors and musicians are good at saying the same things over and over again, I get bored of it.

Trip: You guys had made a film that involved the fans making it, was that part of the creative process or was it political?
Mike D: We grew up at a time of punk rock and hard core, and we'd go see a band and everyone else had their own bands, no one was treated as a star on a pedestal. We've always thought of music that way- involving people, if they were rude, we'd drop them.

Trip: You guys democratize your work, but do you think we live in a democratic society?
Mike D: Supposedly, thats interesting because I had a similar conversation with a friend who was returning from China about their economy and Xangai is big, and I said, "It appears as though its capitalism but isn't it strange there is no democracy?" And he said, "what would be the difference from what I got here and in the U.S.A.?" There's a bit of truth to that. Because we have Capitalism we have freedom and we have freedom in that capitalistic way, but we've got a government that represents the interests of large corporations and rich people. Not what the rest of the people want or think. And we got some misrepresented idea that china is tyrannical and that its different.

Trip: Can that situation change?
Mike D: (sighs) I sure hope so but honestly I don't know, if you had asked me these questions a couple of years ago I would've said yes. But ever since Bush was re-elected the hopes are dwindling <----- (don't quote me on that)

Trip: Do you think you have a big impact on your fans that you can make a difference discussing these issues in your cd's?
Mike D: We give it our all and hope that others will do the same. If you were to ask people if they are pleased with their government or that they're represented by their government, the majority will say no. There are those who feel disconnected from the whole process that there is no medium to involve themselves in, in order to have things the way they'd like to have it. The sad thing is this current administration prefers that there is a small percentage of voters. I don't remember any other time while living in this country it ever being like it is today.

Trip: But at the time when you launched your first album was the start of all that.
Mike D: It was, with Reagan, I don't know if its because we were younger then and it wasn't one our biggest interests, but it didn't seem as extreme as today. Their plans were the same but they weren't quite able to do so much. Looks as though they're coming to an end. Its sad to have a government that is so focused on war.

Trip: Your fans seem to understand more of the street and rap culture rather then your political opinions. Do you think they identify more with that?
Mike D: Its hard to say, we put our opinions out there and hope that it inspires them, especially with our last album, we made it after September 11, in New York it was weird if you didn't mention anything about it. It was on our minds while we were recording.

Fourth page: Top caption to the right of MCA's pic: "We need to stay optimistic, of course everything can get worse and we already miss 2006. But i don't want to imagine and even worse future"
Italicized Caption: 19th of August at noon, no one answers the buzzer. A whistle is heard from the fifth floor. Adam Yauch's grey face smiles as he drops a yellow mini parachute that has the key to the door on it. He grabs the trip magazine off the shelf from Oscilliscopes editing room. Adam had directed various clips of the trio since the start of the band always under the pseudonym Nathaniel Hornblower. Bass player, buddist, raspy voice, patient and a fine gentleman had the interview gliding on a skateboard as he took his daughter to Central Park.

Trip: What sparked your interest in films?
MCA: I don't know I've been connected to it for a long time, In school I liked photography, I used to do animation. When the band started I would film and edit on a Super 8 and would film from the end of the stage. I had bought a VHS camera as soon as it came on the market.

Trip: Have you ever seen a show in Cinema?
MCA: I think Woodstock, Monterey..... but never in cinema, its weird a lot of people in the audience aren't sure what to do, one starts dancing then stops, others are clapping their hands to the music.

Trip: How did you come up with the idea to make a film like that?
MCA: It was simple we didn't want to do something too complicated, I had received an email from a fan who sent me a clip of one of our shows from his cell phone it was all shaken and you could only see the back of peoples heads. The way it was shot made you feel like you were right there in the audience. It was a great idea. If you're going to ask me about my greater interest in narrative films it follows a similar agenda.

Trip: You already have an agenda?
MCA: Yes, I'm producing something. Its about graffiti in New York in 1981. During a time when the department of transportation were reprimanding graffiti artists who drew and wrote on trains. About that time and culture.

Trip: Is the rest of the band involved in this project?
MCA: No currently on my own, they might get involved in the making of it if they want.

Trip: When we came here we were worried because you guys tend to confuse the press
MCA: You're lucky you separated us. (laughs)

Trip: That is one of the reasons we separated you. Why does that happen? Why don't you like the press?
MCA: It's cuz people always ask "what is your favourite style?" And I'm thinking "What are you talking about?" (laughs) I'm going to make a documentary about college basketball, there will be a match between all the best players in a park called Rucker in Harlem. I'll interview a bunch of players. And then all of a sudden I think "If one of them starts to confuse me" Now its me who's gotta ask the questions.

Trip: Are you familiar with brazilian cinema?
MCA: A little bit, but I love City of God. It was incredible. And also the original version The black orphan. Fantastic work.

Trip: And do you listen to brazilian music?
MCA: We like a lot of bossa nova, Mario Coldato, Jorge Ben, The mutants, Gilberto Gil....

Trip: Oh he is now our minister of culture!
MCA: Oh ya!? that's crazy!
