On Sunday night (Monday morning), at about 2:00am I get a call from the pub alarm monitoring company. They said that on their call-out list, after the owners and the other person on the list I was the next person contactable. They tell me there's a tamper alarm going off at the pub, and ask what they want me to do about it. Normally, this isn't my problem. I've been out on maybe 3 call-outs to reactivate the alarm in the past, always with a coworker and a weapon.

An option exists for us to call out security guards to secure the building, but I've never been told to do this, as there's a charge. Often the alram is triggered by a moth, so it's not really a big deal. I said that I wasn't told this was my responsibilty and that they had better call the boss until he picks up. I then call the boss, and leave a message saying I'll go down there with him, if he wants to call me.

Now, on Sunday the owners and their other duty manager were at a wine and food festival, and came in for a meal smashed out of their skulls. So I know how the chain of command found its way down to me. They were all passed out drunk.

On Monday, the boss says he "wasn't impressed with my message" and that I demonstrated "no common sense. What if it were your mother's house?". I said I wouldn't go out on my own, and that I had never been told to call security to the pub before (which is true, we always handled it ourselves). I then explained that everytime I HAD been called out, it was explicitly my responsibility as they were out of town, and I was the acting manager. I then took it a little further and said "Mate, it's your pub. YOU should be answering calls at 1:30am". I work 4 shifts a week now, I'm not running anything there anymore.

I don't know where I'm going with this. This dude fucks everything up in that business, and is lucky to have good staff to cover for him. I feel suprememly disrespected. He said he deliberately didn't call me back to see what I would do, which coming from a 58 year old man, looks as ridiculous typing it as it sounded when he said it.

That all seems very annyoing.

I comiserate, as I am also currently being expected to go above and beyond the call of duty.

Is there anything in your job description about call outs?

Nothing at all. My job description hasn't changed since I started, just my wage went up once and my duties expanded. These cunts don't even give a shit. They sacked a new dude, who was a cool kid. He couldn't work a certain day because of softball (he told them this in writing) and they rostered him on anyway. When he didn't show, I had to cover the holes in staffing. They fucked up, and he gets the sack.

your boss sounds very childish, what with the whole "oh i'll keep him hanging just to see what he will do LOL!"

i would have said this was irresponsible and childish to his face somehow. i have no problem sticking up for myself if i know i'm right. seems like you do too, for which i congratulate you! i stood up for myself re: unfair payment practices recently (namely, a girl who is far less experienced, qualified, fabulous, a student AND only in once a week gets paid FIFTY FUCKING PER CENT more than me!) (that is, of course, if you timed her daily total by 5 to make a week's wage) and they're looking into paying me more! WOOOH!

If it's not in your job description, then bill them for your time and phone expenses.

That's what I do now, and the phone's gone nice and quiet.

I'm waiting on a call about starting a new job once I've been on the honeymoon. Then I'll stand up for myself by calling him a cunt, and dropping all the trays of glasses on the floor. Either that or I'll pour free drinks for everyone in the pub.

I've seen people maintain professionalism right until the minute they left that job; I'm surprised it might be me who makes the embarassing but wholly vindicated spectacle of myself.

Oh, and the keeping me hanging on thing, was like a kid with clumps of hair in their hands telling you they didn't cut their own hair.

Sorry, guys. Share your shit.:o

If you can't vent about bad work practices and employers on a message board then where can you?

People in real life rarely care, and that's for sure.

Shit, sorry, I don't know. I got into the argument with the boss straight away. Then he ignored me for the rest of the night.

When I was 17 I was in charge of closing up my old workplace some nights, setting the alarm, making sure it's all locked up tight.
had done it all many times before, no problems, till one night my bosses were out drinking at some award ceremony one night. apparently the door malfunctioned and the power switch tripped or something, setting the alarm off and unlocking the front doors...security came out, called them (no answer) called second in charge (no answer) called third in charge (who called me...at 11pm when the store shut at 6). I live half an hours drive away, he lives 5 minutes...he (a manager and a grown man) asked me to drive down and 'fix' it as it was my problem. even though it was just a technical glitch.
i was a 17 y/o casual worker, with no authority over anything?? i was teased as being incompetent for forgetting my security pin (i didn't), and they 'joked' about docking the money it cost to keep security on sight until the problem was fixed. everyone's a fucking arsehole.

thanks kiddo for giving me a suitable forum to vent my 5 year-old ex-workplace related frustration :)
sucks about your boss though. sounds like a bigger arsehole than my old one.
And you see, it's not cool. Incompetence is fucking annoying, especially from your superiors. We're not talking about professional areas where everything you do matters, but a little bit of capability from those in charge still wouldn't go astray.

I'll share an encounter I had with a training officer.
I have to add we carried loaded guns in order to secure the premises that we guarded so, any type of training activity ABSOLUTELY HAD TO BE ANNOUNCED ON THE RADIO BEFORE DOING THE EXERCISE.

Anyhow, it's morning. Dark and smoggy outside and I couldn't see shit. I get a call on the radio that the sensor line has been breached and to take a look to see what's going on. I go ahead and walk to the location and see a figure in the dark approx. 200 feet away. The figure gets close enough for me to tell it's a person walking. I yelled, "hault!!" and nothing was said so, I locked and loaded my M-16 and pointed. The person heard my bolt slam foward and yelled, "Wait, wait" in a perfect english accent. I then said for them not to move any further and gave him a password. The guy didn't give the right answer to the password but told me that it was Lt. so and so and he was conducting a training exercise.

That stupid fucker was seconds away from having lead pumped in him from 3 round burst. He is the one who makes the rules for the training exercises and he disobeyed his own rules. Needless to say, an a.a.r. was done and reviewed and he was forbidden to do any type of training exercises after that and was only authorised to sit at a desk and push a pen.

Don't feel horrible bro, your story was a good read too and your boss sounded the least bit of concerned about his own establishment.

He also used you as a scapegoat for his own personal alcohol abuse problem. That's pretty fucked up and I'm sorry to hear that you're employed by this kind of bastard.

It was tempting. He's a civilian Lt. but no different than a military Lt. He's in his late 60's which should have told people that he's too damn old for that stuff.
