I think they pieced together/edited it together on SWW. On the second take MMM's beat that he dropped in was a late and it kicked in on Adrock's part instead of Yauch's verse.
But they "fixed" it for what just aired. (y)

Damn, that was cool! So Whatcha Want and The New Style, they were so badass. Their lyrics even had to be censored! :D I really thought the whole interview thing was cute, they were really crackin eachother up. And when it showed a bunch of clips from when they were younger til now I got all emotional. MMM was fuckin dope! When he dropped that fast brass monkey beat, I was all "shickashickashicka" I donno, can't explain it. The tribute was a bit short, BUT I was still noddin my head and smilin the whole time. The crowd coulda been better of course but ehhh who cares. I was just happy to see the Beastie Boys take the stage because they're sooo fucking gooood! Seriously, I hope this gets on youtube 'cause I wanna see it again!

the beasties' performance was insane! i enjoyed every second of it haha
and in the clip mike and yauch just start laughing at the same time, that was
so adorable awww :o
the opening where ice t's like "mike d from the beastie boys?! i don't know who
the hell mike b is" that was hilarious.
uhhh...
MIX MASTER MIKE! what can i say?! (y)
the man can rock a crowd, but the crowd wasn't feeling it i guess. me, on the
other side of the television, i was definitely feeling it.

I thought that whole thing was incredible. They really gave the Beasties their due, and the performance was off the hook. It was almost as if performing in front of all those legends brought that LTI-era swagger back, cuz they killed The New Style. That was off the hook, man.

nice to see the guys into it. I was glad that tip came out and saved Diddy's ass. Man I always forget how exciting their shows are.
By the way, When is Tribe called Quest gonna get their props? I think they could have replaced MC lyte.

I must say that I was not impressed with most of the editing. Afrika's tribute was much much better live than on the airing tonight.

Just saw the bboys and Lyte's performance on the West Coast.
I got a little teary eyed during the, "You know it's... When ya... In the...." part of SWW. It's definitely the high point of the song and seeing them give it their all is moving to me.
It's subtle, but I also love how Horovitz flips it a bit and says, "What you see is what you get, and you see WE." That's hot shit.
Also, I get emotional when I see others getting into it and feeling the music. It happened a lot watching AIFST and also tonight when they were showing some of the other artist's getting down to the last part of the New Style.
All in all, it was a solid performance, although I kinda wish I didn't know it was edited (damn spoilers!;) "
Props to three true hip hop legends. I didn't think it was possible but I'm even more excited to see them this weekend.

some of the editing could have been better, but i the sound editing of the audience vs. the music was TERRIBLE.
when we were there. i remember the crowd being MUCH louder and into it, and when the camera showed them you could see everyone feeling it.
regardless, i LOVED the performance, how everyone above said that the honorees were all groovin along and the performance itself was ill.

The Fat Boys? Come on. "I'm starvin, I'm in the mood, plain and simple I need food. Eat some beans and very soon everybody in the place would leave the room. And for some reason, I cant reveal! So pass a banana, so I can peel!"
Kurtis Blow and Whodini definitely need to be honored, but The Fat Boys cant hold a candle to Cube or MC Lyte. Cuz she's MC Lyte and she's light as a rock.

I enjoyed Q-Tip with his Busy Bee-like glasses. I'm not much of a Fab fan. Was Fab supposed to be Jazzy Jeff with his glasses? But seriously, I feel the Beasties deserve better than the treatment from Tracy Morgan. Regina honored Lyte, Diddy honored Rush, KRS-1 honored Afrika. Tracy did not honor the Beasties. His intro felt like a time killer. MMM killed it beyond words. The beat selection for So Whatcha Want was like an encore from their last stop on Letterman. Did they have to use Breathe again or did they select again because Fab was there performing? It was very cool for them to do The New Style. However, there was too much editing. Even Ad-Rock replaced "fly skimmies" with "party people". Hopefully because Afrika was there & not because he doesn't want to anymore.

I thought it was quite humorous how VH1 censored the Beastie Boys' lyrics in "The New Style". In a room filled with members of NWA, Ice-T, and Diddy, the Beastie Boys were probably the least likely group to pull out their firearms and shoot up the place.
Adrock's "you know I get high" lyric was also censored.
Are you seriouly still not allowed to say "high" on television? You can have reality shows with 14-year old kids having orgies, but you can't say "high" or "22 automatic" on VH1? What's this world coming to?

regarding Tracy Morgan-
when you open a segment, let alone the first tribute of the night, with "I never understood this next band" you cant get much worse than that...
he hit the high note with "the Beastie Boys came from a different world..." and the bit about "Free Tibet" meant well, but he didnt higlight all the positives over a 20 year career...

I watched the show again last night on that other VH-1 channel, VH-1 SOUL. They usually play a lot of boring R&B, but this week has been off the hook. They had guest VJ's Big Daddy Kane & MC Lyte. They played lots of late 80's/early 90's rap (Kool G Rap, the Biz, X-Clan, KMD, PE, etc.)
Anyway, back to the Hip Hop Honors. As I was watching the show again, I realized why VH-1 chose Tracy Morgan to present. Since he was the 1st presenter of the show, what better way to promote TOTALLY AWESOME, that 80's movie which premieres next month where -> on VH-1 & starring who -> Tracy Morgan. So that's why; just a shameless self-promotion. On top of that, just about every time the Honors show goes to commercial they of course show a spot for the movie as well, which the DVD goes on sale just a few days after it airs on TV? Where's the logic in that? Well, I hope nobody watches the movie or buys 1 damn copy!(n)

VH1 is a channel that makes shows where they say that white rappers are lame, and then go ahead and honor the Beastie Boys with Tracey Morgan doing bad jokes beforehand. It's like they were trying to be fair and honor them, but at the same time stick true to their opinion that white rappers shouldn't be taken seriously. *Shakes head*.

Tracy Morgan's a jerk. Not that I was ever a huge fan to begin with, but after seeing his awful "tribute" to the Beastie Boys, I hate his guts. Not only was it not funny, it was disrespectful to them. And, VH1 should be ashamed of themselves for getting him to do the Boys' intro, just so they could promote their stupid new 80s show. The other presenters all had some kind of a link, with the artists they were honoring. What the hell does Tracy Morgan have to do with hip hop, or the Beastie Boys?! The guys were very gracious in the way they handled it, but I'm annoyed that they weren't shown more respect. They certainly deserve it.
