View Full Version : So how are the newly-non-smokers doing?

...just curious, and want to boast a little bit, too:
I'm on Day 17, so by and large, I think I'm over the hump. Usually, that part's over MUCH faster than it was this time -- maybe because this is the first time I've just MADE myslf stop smoking rather than WANTING to stop smoking. (I'd just worked out a nice blend of tobaccos for home-rolling, too. Oh, man.)
But anyway. Day 15 was the first day that I woke up and did my exercising and such and got the rice going and blah blah and then got in the shower and thought, "Hey -- I'm not even thinking about a cigarette yet!" usually, by shower time, I've had two or three.
So that was kind of cool.
There are still moments, though, and I find myself romaing around San José rather than going straight home -- kind of killing time so I don't have to face myself at home in the apartment without smoking. But that's getting better.
How are the rest of you folks doing? It seems like we had a handful of people quitting at about the same time. I was on the late bus.

Our city is going "smoke free" as of Jan 1....I only partake of the wicked weed when I consume liquor, which is every weekend....I can't believe I'm so upset with the concept....pubs and clubs are gonna take a beating, all these cats who opened cigar/martini bars a few years back are foaming at the mouth.....no more,"smoking and drinking on a Tuesday night"....although I support the concept of a smoke free workplace from a employees perspective...bitch and moan!;)
I'm weak....its been since Saturday. I was doing pretty good at first...but broke down. I won't be drinking any booze for a while so that may make it easier for me to get over the whole drinking and smoking thing.
Now my wife is quitting with me so its going to be a lot easier now that I know that I can't just take one from her when I have the urge.

Oy -- don't even get me started, man.
Either make cigarettes illegal or let private property owners (including businesses) decide if their buildings are smoke-free or not. Then patrons and employees can choose accordingly.(n)

I had a dream about a dear old lady in my old church getting up to the altar, starting some ritual reading, and accidentally settinhg the table on fire.
Wonder if that means anything.

I just know it really burns my eyes and lungs and irritates when I'm out to restaurants or bars in DC. The ventilation systems SUCK, I always come home reeking of cheap cigarettes.
I'd definitely go to individual places in DC who banned smoking, if they did do that. I wonder how many would actually decide to ban it on their own, though.

See, I'm thinking it would be a great business strategy for exactly the reason you say. Smoke really sucks for non-smokers, so can you imagine how many non-smokers would insist on that certain bar, because it was a non-smoking place? They could have an outdoor patio for smokers or something.
Kind of the same as vegetarian places. A lot of places that offer a veggie menu aren't really all that great, but it's the fact that they can accommodate vegetarians at all that gives them the business.
QueenAdrock
10-18-2006, 12:28 PM
That's true, but then who would be the 'vegetarians' in this situation? The smokers or non-smokers? Cuz there's about three vegetarian places in town that I can think of, and we have lots of restaurants. It sucks for them still.

I concur, fully completely, well mostly...Irony #1: Outdoor patios are already designated as Non Smoking areas in this town!??
However from a health and safety/workers rights perspective,I believe adequate protection from carcinogens must be considered and applied universally....Irony #2: how can tobacco that was sooooo appealing the night before almost kill ya while you try and get down a full english, greasy spoon breakie, the morn after....

Non-smokers. But it was just an analogy.
The idea being that if the choice is offered -- especially a minority choice (say, non-smoking bars or vegetarian restaurants), until the majority catches on, it becomes a winner by default.
So how many of you are addicted to the nicotine and how many of you are addicted to the smoking?
I think I'm addicted to the smoking. I just like to smoke. But of course, i'm probably just addicted to the nicotine.

Well, but what I'm saying is: if it's not illegal, then it's a choice people have: to smoke or not to smoke; to be around smoke or not to be. As long as it's a legal option that doesn't put unwilling/unknowing people in danger (eg drunk driving), then it should be the option of private ownership.

Yeah, but then I worry if the shitty bars would be the smoke-free ones. I've seen many a shitty bar in my day.
I wouldn't mind if bars accomodated smokers all the time, if there was a specific section for them to smoke, and if it was like, fulllly ventilated. It's usually crowded and smelly wherever I am. Especially on St. Patty's Day when the only place we could find at this huuuuge bar was a spot away from all doors and windows. And that was after I paid my $10 cover so I wasn't about to leave.
Teh suck.

Yeah. I understand.
It's so weird, because I see and feel tons of benefits just from quitting for this short a time: better breath; I can exercise longer and harder; color is back in my face; I have an awful, awful lot of energy... and yet, to celebrate, I'd love a cigarette.

You know,it’s an interesting dichotomy, yeah? The legality’s of the issue are most arguable...as someone who believes in freedom of choice and subsequent responsibility for ones actions, I’m with you…..at the same time standards with regards to safety should be applicable regardless of the nature of the industry one works in, be it service, commercial or industrial…..incentives in terms of tax rebates should be made available in order to assist owners in upgrading their premises with adequate ventilation etc, etc…. jesus christo all this smoking thought,I’m gonna go snag a couple of little Romeo an Julietta cigarillos and a manhatten after work, you know mull the whole thing over in style, congrats on your cessation regardless!

Yeah -- if the goverment wanted to make cigarettes and hard alcohol illegal, I'd have zero problem with that, morally. Less than zero. The amount of problems they cause is ridiculously huge compared to the "freedom" to use those things.
The overwhelming majority of alcohol is our country is consumed by alcoholics, anyway, if our self-reporting is to be believed. The statistic is nuts -- like 90% or something.

Another week and you'll have a deep natural sleep like you haven't in months
Another week and you'll be free and saving cash
Another week and you'll be reminded how mundane everyday life is and be drawn to smoking again to dull the dullness.

7 Years on November 15th... its going well... I still smoke in my dreams...
I quit the Marlboro Red pack a day habit on August 19th. I chew the nicotine gum and think I have it beat. I am like YoungRemy and do dream of smoking a Red. I have been around smokers and don't feel the urge to bum.
I am taking the little man to Philly to see his Great Grandma this weekend. I have a bunch of relatives that drink and smoke. They are having a big Eagles cookout on Sunday. It will test me since a bunch of people will be smoking and drinking outside in the backyard. If I get through this weekend I definitely have it beat.

stop fucking smoking, nick. you are not stupid, and you are stronger than the fucking addiction. it's a waste of money.
you too, yeti. that little boy of yours needs his daddy, and the sooner you stop the less likely you are to cut your life short. do it for him.
today in bio the prof was fucking livid recalling a case (he's an ER doc too) where an asthmatic 6-year-old boy was rushed to the ER because he couldn't breathe. the kid didn't make it. upon autopsy, it was found that his lungs were like swiss cheese - he had emphysema. turns out his parents both smoked in front of him. and he had fucking asthma. charges were pressed against them for the murder of their son. oooh, that makes me so fucking mad.

Employees must be protected. As I have moaned before, when there's a work shortage, people will take what they have to, so there's often no choice for some.
But I see banning smoking in public places as a change in social etiquette. Something doesn't have to be illegal for it to be banned in public, such as blow jobs, enemas, and so on.
I do think there needs to be enclosed outdoor areas for smokers though, people seems to spend more time standing outside pubs than in them, cluttering up the pavements and yeling as passers by, and with pubs in quiet resedential areas, raising street noise so that people can't open their windows in the summer for all the noise.

I'm what you could call an occational smoker. I sometimes smoke for months and then not for several years (reminds me of my sexlife actually  ). Now I hadn't smoked for four and half years (except a few party smokes i.e. when I drink I might have a smoke, but rarely), but now when my friend was over we were sitting in the balcony in the summer, having a beer and as he smoked I was sort of socially smoking. Then we went to a big birthday party so I knew I'd be drinking so I bought my own packet. Then my new found love left me and I was totally devastated and have been smoking the last couple of weeks. I smell bad, it tastes horrible and I could've bought a couple of cd's with that money (well one at least), but I've been drinking more as well (crying in my glass of wine). Hopefully when this packet runs out I won't be buying a new one...
