DC hey, let's see. you guys rank 103 in the world, you're beaten by Monaco, and you beat Quito. your date of birth is 1791, you must drink a fiery red Martini at trendy Degrees Bar and Lounge in Georgetown. and you Urban Myth - Washington was torched by brittish troops in the war of 1812, and although the Capitol was eventually rebuilt, the city entered a slump from which it wouldn't recover for decades. A dispirited vote to abandon the capital lost by only nine votes!

it's from a book published by Lonely Planet called the Cities Books. i paid $80 for this mofo. there are definately alot of unique places in here, not just all the typically boomtowns of the last hundred years. but i'm bloody surprised the us got 14 cities, considering there's not much history compared to most cities in europe

icy manipulator
10-20-2006, 12:46 PM
also it is a little bit bias to some of the more exotic places on earth. plus it's an australian book so sydney ranks as no. 3. even bloody perth and hobart get a mention!

hmm, i didn't realise the locals were called Glaswegians. anyway, urban myth - the age-old rivalry between Glasgow and Edinburgh goes way back. in the late 19th century a group of glaswegian painters took on the domineering artistic establishment of Edinburgh. up to this point paintings were largely historic scenes and sentimental visions of the Highlands, but the Glasgow boys (as they became known) saw the world Differently. Painters such as Sir James Guthrie, EA Hornel, George Henry and Joseph Crawhall experimented with colour and themes of rural life, shocking Edinburgh's artistic society. Like Charles Rennie Mackintosh, the Glasgow boys achieved succes in europe, where their wrok met with admiration and artistic recognition, but they were largely snubbed in the UK

man i should've read that the whole way thru before typing it. it's gotta be the most boring one i've read so far.

dublin comes in at 28, beaten by Florence, which is fair enough, and it beats mexico city, fucking ay. Dublin's Gold Star is it's pub culture - despite the chain of gastropubs and chains, Dublin is still the best place in the world for a pint. Exports including Guiness, James Joyce, U2 and Georgian door knockers? And everyone in Dublin has a Bono story.

Manchester comes in at 126, beaten by Zagreb and it beats Antigua. They're called Mancunians. The defining experience is breathing in the view of the city from little visited Godlee Observatory before heading down for some shopping heaven in the northern quarter, followed by a reviving beer in Bar Centro and a spot of live music at the Manchester Roadhouse.
Do a tour of Old Trafford and imagine wearing one of those red shirts
