I've always said they were the first gangtsa rappers...dont know if its 100% true...but they were the first I heard rhyming about guns and violence.

i know Ice T & Schooly D were "technically first but they werent getting play on MTV or on top 40 radio in 86 or 87 were they?

ice t i think was the first to get really popular with the mainstream. his was the first gangster rap song i ever heard. it made me crazy forever! that song was Colors when the Colors soundtrack came out. after that, there were countless gangster rappers. i have hundreds of ganster rap songs memorized off by heart, and most of them really make me cringe to hear today hahaha

Colors came out in 1988, the same year N.W.A. made it big, and 2 years after Licensed To Ill came out. I'm pretty sure Ice T. broke into the mainstream in 1985. Dont quote me on that, though.

"6 in the morning police at my door, fresh adidas squeak across the bathroom floor" -that came out before colors, but i didnt discover it until i heard colors. i was only like 13 hahaha. yeah straight outta compton right after that, nwa and the posse, too short, so many others at the same time. that was the best era of hip hop. not just for gangster rap, but all rap. late 80's early 90's. proud to say i'm from that school :) actually that was the best time for skateboarding too. and videogames. hmmm. random thoughts. best years of my life. seems so long ago now :(
