Boy, this movie really, really works until the last few minutes. It still works at that point, but it doesn't kick quite enough butt where it needed to at the very very end to have you sailing out of the theater on a big high
But so, so much is right. Boy, it's good. Christian Bale's best performance, I think.
8/10 (y)

My buddy and I were in accord on this one. (y)
Very nice mounting tension, nice use of horror visuals/ideas... kind of like Spy vs. Spy meets E.A. Poe. (y) (y)

I'm very interested in this movie....maybe will hit it up next weekend
I really liked it. My only wish is that they had actually just left a few things for you to know without spelling it out for you.

...that'd be a tricky thing in this case, but I see what you mean.
For what it's worth: David Bowie was outstanding. He's either gotten incredibly accomplished as an actor or Nolan knew exactly what to do with his limitations. He was just perfect.

Co-wrote and directed, yeah.

Rival magicians in late 19th century England (and Colorado Springs, actually). Used to work together, became enemies, and try to do very bad stuff to one another to sabatoge each other as magicians then, what the heck, ruin each other's lives, etc.
Hugh Jackman, Christian Bale, Scarlett Johanssen (sp?), David Bowie, Andy Serkis, and Michael Caine are in it.

Okay I saw it over the weekend and really did enjoy it. I had figured out most of the ending before it happened but the last few minutes were great!

I'm too lazy to go back and re-read my previously-spouted opinions, so:
The movie is really quite a bit better than the book. The book gets kind of bogged down in the mechanizations of its plot and ramifications (and curiously obsessive about tallying the money each magician makes); the movie streamlined a lot of that stuff -- it made the story better by enhancing the potboiler aspects, which actually then gives it more room for symbolism. Very nicely adapted. (y)

i forgot making this comment. anyway i saw it last night and couldn't help but thinking it was a bit like Memento and that chris nolan was the director. the thought was prolly in the back of my head but oh well.
very good movie. i thoroughly enjoyed it
Far and away the best movie I've ever purchased without previously watching it. David Bowie is outstanding and I agree with a-z that this is definitely Bale's best performance.(y)

You bought it before you saw it? On this movie, I think that was kind of risky. I think The Prestige is something that either works for you or really, really doesn't.
It's better than the book, though. The book is good, but kind of dodgy.

Guys are always, "I'd hit it, I'd hit it!" about some pretty nasty skanks.
Scarlett-lust, however, needs no apologies. (y)

I'm a little nervous about that one, but what the hell. Better than when Cybil Shepherd did her Cole Porter album.

I'd still hit her.
She may do it bad, but fuck, she has taste!
