View Full Version : BBMB Other Music MVP?
DroppinScience
10-22-2006, 01:22 AM
I've actually been dwelling on this for awhile, but are there any frequenters to this sub-forum whose musical opinions you generally hold in a high regard? Such that if a particular member makes a recommendations and it's very likely you'd check out that record and think: "Well, if they like it, it's GOTTA be good."
There's lots of people here who have a generally good taste in music, but my shortlist would definitely have to be yeahwho, a-z and bgrrrlie. They're the types whom I look up to and could very well be the closest things to being musically infallible.
All right, now that my blatant jock-riding is done, it's your turn. Who do you turn to for all your BBMB musical needs?

Auton and Mickill maaaybe...overall most of you have dogshit music taste.
mickill and kid p. for hip hop music.

erm...can i say steger?
i almost always trust auton's taste, he's never really steered me wrong and actually makes pretty nice stuff himself.
i like a lot of what drederick likes too, and airesse has bitchin' taste. documad too.
i don't know, i'm sure you've all introduced me to something great somewhere along the line.

Anybody who posts in this forum is generally valued by me. For one, because I like hearing other people's opinions on music. On the other hand, because I can often find out about something here. But choosing an MVP on the basis of supposed 'tastes'? That's dickriding man. One person's taste is surely anothers wankery.

That's flattering, and I appreciate that, cause I've tried to steer you in a number of directions when you've asked. But I'm not even in the same library as half of these dudes. They really know what's going on.

Hey, I was going to say Auton! Now I look like a copycat. He's the first board member I noticed when I was a noob -- people in my real life have never heard of the old stuff I love. I was surprised when he turned out to be a young guy.
There are a shocking number of young adults on this board with good taste in various genres.

Well I've resently noticed that Beck has pretty good taste (or similar to mine, sometimes).
Also DS and a-z have cool taste, and I respect Zorra's and Cosmo's tastes, even tho they clash alot with mine sometime. Sometimes I dont' pay enough attention who posts what, so I can't really tell.... but there's some good ones and some less to my liking...

I dislike a lot of people's taste in music here on this board, mostly because I'm afraid to try new music and stuff.
I'll say DS is decent, and Heiress because she likes the Trews.

I'm really surprised I turned up in here! :)
It's so hard to get a real grasp of what someone else likes though without just being around them a lot. I think I'll make up my mind more once I see what people choose for mixes (if we do the trade thing).
I'm sure I'll leave a ton off - but people who I've heard about new stuff from (that I liked):

I absolutely love this forum, so good for helping in my debates on what albums to actually bother spendng money on and for finding new shit to go dl
Im surprised I got any mentions because my threads usually get no replies, unless people just go download whatever band or song I make a thread about and then dont bother replying
but I would have to agree that mrbrodie is usually dryhumping many of my new favorite bands either just before I profess my love for them or very soon after
documad, mickill, a-z, and dred are my favorites when it comes to 60-70s knowledge
though steger is the only one I know who has a competing obsession with golden oldies
nothing is more fun than having NLOL shoot down my taste in hip hop <3
me and lara are on the same mo-town/soul love train
Id say cosmo and I have extremely similar tastes when it comes to certain genres that we both enjoy
I dont really sense skra's presence in here all that often, but I do know that every time he changes his myspace profile song I newly melt
I like competing with icy for more replies in the "what song are you listening to" thread
and yes toucan, I do have a weird obsession with seeing the trews live even though I own NONE of their albums
I admire droppins and bgrrrlies musical knowlege but my tastes in music are a wee bit different than their own in general
and then there's ET and he knows where hes at with me when it comes to music so there is no need for me to repeat it here

Yes, DDD used to start threads about old songs and I wouldn't think much at the time but within the week I'd find myself digging through my old vinyl for it, and within another week I'd be downloading it for the ipod. I've probably bought 50 old singles from itunes because of the two of you.

While I appreciate you being modest, I think you're a model BBMB:OM member. It always feels like your opinions on music are probably the most sound. I get the impression that when you like a band, you're sincere in your admiration and you're not basing it off any hype or anything. I'll give an example. Some people can trash Nirvana on this board for either being a horrible band or that they're just a decent band too overhyped because of Cobain's suicide. You have this way of looking beyond all that stuff, listen to the albums and go: "You know what? They really ARE an excellent unit."
Similar sentiments with your love for Bob Dylan (which is partly the reason why I've gotten into Dylan, again).
That's how I see it.
*special mention for spanishbomb, who was kinda more right than wrong.
I'm divided on this notion. While it's great that he was getting into older stuff, his notion of "Anything made past 1989 is bad music" is a ridiculous concept. Nothing happened between Dec. 31, 1989 and Jan. 1, 1990 that made musicians suck. And there's always potential for new groups to blow minds.
Anyways, I've kept in contact with him since he's been banned. He's starting to scrape the bottom of the barrell of pre-89 music. I mean, he's listening to Chicago and the Doobie Brothers now. :(

Absolutely not. If anything, I was hoping I would not be mentioned. It's cool a few folks have mentioned me, but I require (and always will require) lots of fine-tuning before my tastes could possibly touch b-grrrlie or a-z, etc.

I don't really go out of my way to find new stuff. Not sure why really. I just stopped keeping up with new stuff coming out since that whole "I've got a raspy voice and like to yell a lot" shit came out replacing alternative as I had known it.
I'm getting more into the indie genre, so Droppin' helps me find a lot of stuff he thinks I'll like...but he's able to do so because he knows me pretty well.
I've never been one to see people's music suggestions and try it out to see if I like it because most people's music tastes are very ecclectic. It's different than say, comedy. Most people have one type of humor and stick to that. Which is why whenever NLOL says something is funny, I go and get it. He introduced me to both The State and Mr. Show, so I trust his humor.
Music is much harder to gauge. You can like many different kinds of things, and I've never met someone who's music I like 100%. Closest was maybe 70% and she's my best friend. :p

I have gotten into quite a bit of stuff from recommendations from this board, I wouldnt single out anyone really as its more the fact that collectively you have managed to make some bands, artists really interesting and I have grown curious. I didnt know anythin about Doom, Edan or much about the Wu Tang Clan. Although not really one individual was responsible, Ally Al deserves a mench for supplying some stuff.
A-Z gets a shout for being dead knowledgable on a wide range and he's dead enthusiastic about it all too. How anyone can get that excited about the coral is beyond me but he has opened my ears to Can.

cool, I got a shout out from one of my favorite people.
I know alot about metal-alt metal (if you may).
One thing that sucks is while I was away playing GI joe, I've lost track on alot of bands and such and having only a Virgin record store that puts black marker on some of the c.d's because of too much skin, I've really missed out for a while.
I mainly check this section from time to time for recommendations on hip hop and Kid P and Mickill are probably the people who's given alot of good reviews-insight in that department.

As for riot in belgium theres 2 songs you must hear: The Acid never lies and La musique. The acid never lies was a massive hit about a year ago, you should be able to get it off limewire.
