Similar in the eras that birthed their styles at least.

id say wu tang in the sense that theyve put out some stuff that is hard for almost anyone to compete with. and thats why they get the nod. however the roots are still coming with pretty decent stuff and have always had pretty decent stuff, where as wu tang are kinda stagnent in terms of group production and havent released some greatness since 97.

Exactly. May as well put up a "Barry Manilow vs. Slayer" poll. :p

Tell me, O mighty intellects of this board, who you would compare each group to respectively (one group, mind).

I'd be more apt to compare the Roots to, say, the Dilated Peoples or the Pharcyde, and the Wu Tang Clan band to, say, Bone Thugs N Harmony.

Even those are shitty comparisons, but far more believable than this one.

Bullshit. Dilated came out of a gay late-90's alterna-pack scene. Since Work the Angles they did nothing of note. Pharcyde had one pretty good album.

Wu-Tang and Bone Thugs is stroke victim talk. Seriously.

I think most people would argue that comparing Wu Tang to the Roots isn't too much better.

Both groups came out of the early 90's. Both groups changed the musical scope of hip-hop, and are still releasing material. Both are East Coast groups. Both have relied on a patriarch-type producer within the group at many points of their career.

Tell me why The Roots compared to Wu-Tang, in personal preference, is such a headfuck. Sure, The Roots may be a little 'softer' at points, but they get grimey too, where The Wu do it the other way around.

its a pretty bleh comparison. Either way, anyone who says The Roots is fruity.

and the reason its a bad comparison is live instrumentation vs beats...the roots are more like Stetsasonic than Wu Tang Clan.

Yeah, I see what you mean. But The Roots don't always sound live on record.

I think the fact that at most, The Roots have only had 2 MCs (excluding guests) on the mic at once is enough to make this a bunk comparison.

I am sorry to inform the maker of the poll that ODB alone invalidates this poll.

Anyway, I'm just asking which you prefer. If the BootCamp Clik had been a bigger presence, I would have had the ideal comparison. Kindly shove your opinions into the little hole you pee from, for not quite enough money.

I can't really tell you which band I prefer without giving you my opinion. Shoving it would kinda defeat the purpose of the poll, no?

Wu Tang is like the 90's NWA or something more along those lines. Kinda.

Stet was never really a band band like The Roots, though.

Neither group really has any contemporaries. I prefer Wu. I think I enjoy The Roots more as a backing band for other artists during live performances than anything else.

9 rappers, 7 out of the 9 amazing lyricist in their own way. 2 great CDs and one undeniable classic. 5 str8 solo heaters in a row. One of, if not, the best producer in the game. They redefined hip-hop groups and brought the East back. Roots are decent there no Wu at all.

36 Chambers
Tical
Only Built 4 Cuban Linx
Liquid Swords
Return to the 36 Chambers (the Dirty Version)
Ironman

That covers Wu-Tang's 'golden age', then you consider pursuing Forever (disc 1 is still awesome), Supreme Clientele and any others that some people with personal preferences may have.

As far as The Roots, just ignore Phrenology and The Tipping Point for now. Things Fall Apart is the 'big' album. It's alright. Organix and Illadelph Halflife are better, and I really dig Game Theory (the newest one).
