View Full Version : computer question

I've got a laptop and recently the monitor's gone on the fritz. Like, it'll have white bars that run up and down the screen and make it very difficult to read. My brother suggested it's a loose circuit.
Now my question is, how much should I be expected to pay to fix something like this? I talked to HP and they said if I sent it in, I'd pay $298 for shipping and the diagnostic. Which seems ridiculous because that's like half the cost of my computer (I got a basic model, nothing fancy).
If you've gotten stuff on your computer fixed, have you paid less than $298 for the diagnostic? Or is that standard? Should I find someone else? And if so, who? Where do I find them? Should I bother my computer science friend or do they not know anything?
BLAH!

HMM. How much do those cost. And can I do it myself? I have the feeling the answer is no. :(

well im not too family with laptops
but i think video cards are extremely easy to replace. they just slide in and out somewhere on the laptop.

I sure hope it's something like that. Cuz I don't have $300 lying around.

Without sounding like a complete geek, I would check out an HP forum/discussion board to see if anyone else has had smiliar issues with their model and find out how they sorted it. My mp3 kept failing to update when I refreshed it, and I got it 'fixed' by following their advice.
I agree with Turd. Do not pay that fee and shipping. You can find someone to help and save your money.
My VCR went on the fritz and they wanted $150 to fix it. It cost that much. I bought laser cleaning disc and it did not work. I then bought a new S Video cable and badabing. It was a short in my other cable.
Usually a little self investigation is the answer to all your woes. You can also look up the model online and go into a blog or chatroom. Good Luck.

Apparently that phrase is unique to America. I had no idea.
But thanks Yeti/trailer princess. I'm going to expand my options and see who can help me from the internets first. Then I'm going to solicit one of my nerd friends to do it. Because that shipping fee is absolutely outrageous. Might as take that money and put it towards a new laptop.
